QUOTE(Greg The Bull Luzinski @ Apr 23, 2006 -> 03:48 PM) Cancel this thread, Anderson had a two hit game 4/23/06 !! Should this be green? Last time he had 2 hits in a game, the Sox lost four in a row.

QUOTE(Leonard Zelig @ Apr 23, 2006 -> 05:07 PM) Did anybody catch the answer to the trivia question? I missed it. Phil Cavaretta played 22 seasons for the Cubs and Sox. He was born and raised in Chicago.

The Continuing Rise of Jose Contreras
BlackBetsy replied to whitesoxfan101's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Apr 23, 2006 -> 06:19 PM) The trade has become quite lopsided. Count only gave up 2 or 3 runs and he didn't have anywhere near his best stuff. Simply amazing. Mind you, he wasn't facing the '27 Yankees, or even the '06 Yankees out there. Contreras is so good that without his best stuff, he can beat poor hitting teams. With his best stuff, he can beat anyone. That's an ace. -
The Sox are 4-0 in 2-run games, meaning that they are 5-2 overall in games decided by two runs or less. That is actually slightly better than last year. Warning: small sample size.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 22, 2006 -> 06:31 PM) I think Johnson is the only one with a real shot, it looks like me like Mussina may have an outside shot, but I think he is a couple of years away from being out of the game with the decline he has had the last few years. I'd like to see someone run Bill James' favorite toy on the current crop of under-30 pitchers to see which ones have a 30% or greater chance at 300 wins. I would think of a few candidates: Captain Cheeseburger Mark Buehrle Roy Oswalt (less likely) Mark Mulder Dontrelle Willis There's a good Hardball Times article on this back in 2004 - Link

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Apr 22, 2006 -> 12:23 PM) The era of the 300 game pitcher is over. Players don't start as often, go as deep, or pitch as much as pitchers of the by gone eras. In the next 20 years I would predict that a number such as 250 wins for players of this era will become HOFesque. I'm not quite ready to concede that yet. I think that we don't see a lot of 300 game winners, period. Here's when the 300-game winners ended their careers: pre-1900: 5 1900-1920: 4 (Cy Young, Christy Mathewson, Kid Nichols, Eddie Plank) 1920-1940: 2 (Walter Johnson, Pete Alexander) 1940-1960: 1 (Lefty Grove) 1960-1980: 2 (Warren Spahn, Early Wynn) 1980-2000: 6 (S. Carlton, T. Seaver, D. Sutton, N. Ryan, P. Niekro, G. Perry) 2000- : 2 (Clemens, Maddux) + Glavine possible #3 If you think about it, the 2000-2020 period could have just as many 300+ game winners as the 1900-1920 period if Glavine hits the mark (25 to go heading into 2006), and Randy Johnson can get 2 1/2 more solid seasons (he was 37 shy at the beginning of 2006). Mussina could always suck it up and have 4 more 16-win seasons and a 10 win season to hit 300 (He'd be 41 when he hit it).

QUOTE(BlackBetsy @ Apr 22, 2006 -> 11:48 AM) I just did a personal John Sickels-esque crystal ball on Buehrle and here's what I came up with: Total 275 174 That's roughly 12 more years at 16 wins per year. I figure a fade out at age 37/38. This, of course, depends on how good the teams Buehrle played for are. The 2001-2004 White Sox teams weren't great, but they did score a ton of runs. (In fact, had the Sox had 1 more Buehrle each of those years, they probably win the division in every year but 2002). I should add that is borderline HOF. If he keeps up his ERA+ of 128, then he would belong in the Hall of Fame. His best comp would probably be Jim Palmer or Tom Glavine. The 100 more wins than losses would probably do the trick. Jim Kaat - 283-237, ERA+ 107, not HOF Tommy John - 288-231, ERA+ 111, not HOF Robin Roberts - 286-245, ERA+ 113, HOF Red Ruffing - 273-225, ERA+ 109 (!!), HOF Jim Palmer - 268-152, ERA+ 125, HOF Fergie Jenkins - 284-226, ERA+ 115, HOF Bert Blyleven - 287-250, ERA+ 118, not HOF Bob Feller - 266-162, ERA+ 122, HOF Tom Glavine (active) 275-184, ERA+ 120, not yet eligible (Hall of Famer on 2 of 4 HOF tests). We are talking a lot of years away from now. 12 years of production like that would be amazing. But I wouldn't put it past Buehrle. The other scenario is that he burns out in 2-3 years and finishes something like 120-70. Rich, yes, Hall of Fame, no.

QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Apr 19, 2006 -> 05:45 PM) I'm pretty sickened by your low expectations for this team. If Javy wasn't freaking tipping his pitches Friday, I'd be 10 wins in a row. 9-1 in our last 10 is only acceptable for those once in a while occasions where we just get our butt kicked from inning 1 through 9. Javy was tipping his pitches? I didn't catch that one. Where did you see that? I'm always interested in that kind of thing. You might also add that if Guillen had brought in Cotts instead of Logan in the 8th inning of Game 3, the Sox would be 12-3. Or if Ozuna could catch in left field, 13-2. Or if Politte doesn't give up the gopher to Sweeney, 14-1. The Sox have been in and had a good chance to win every game but Game 2 against Cleveland.

QUOTE(robinventura23 @ Apr 14, 2006 -> 11:13 PM) Tonight would be a good game to dust the cob webs off of Ross Gload and put him in the game. Not a bad idea. He could spell the rest of the pen. At this point, he's better than Politte anyway. -

QUOTE(CWSOX45 @ Apr 14, 2006 -> 09:53 PM) If the Sox had that same mentality you possess, that means that all of the young players came up through our system would be long gone. That means we wouldn't have Robin Ventura who started off terribly as a rookie, along with guys like Crede, Garland, Cotts and plenty of others who struggled as rookies. You have to give you guys like Anderson time. It's too early to give up on him. Robin Ventura's really bad stretch came early in the 1990 season. Here's his daily log for that season. What you notice is that when Ventura went 0 for 39, he struck out only 10 times. Anderson is well past that - 12 K's in what, 27 AB's now? He's not even close. He definitely needs to sit for a while. The problem is, as others have noted, that the Sox really don't have any true options in CF right now outside a trade. -

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Apr 14, 2006 -> 09:22 PM) And people wonder why I criticize our minor league system. Anderson's loopy swing is continually exploited by major league pitchers. His plate approach isn't exactly good, either. What's funny is he's the best we have in a position of supposed strength. It was only a position of strength until we traded Chris Young. -
I'd worry more about Pods if he was striking out. He's not; he's making contact, just not catching the right pieces of the ball. He should have had 3-4 more hits than he's had just do to the ball falling in the right place by luck - would people be so upset if he was hitting .176 (four more hits)? Mind you, there are some other hitters who are struggling mightily, too. Dan Johnson is 0-for-the-season. Mike Sweeney is 2 for 21 so far (one of the two, of course, beat the Sox). Rondell White is 3 for 34. Shawn Green is 3 for 27, Carl Everett is 4 for 32. These are all good hitters that are going to hit. Things just haven't fallen in for them yet.
-
Heck of a game for F. Hernandez (forgot his first name) down at Kanny. 4 for 4, hitting .353 to start the season. It's good for him to get off to a great start. Derek Rodriguez put up a great line for Kanny, too. With the exception of Redding, excellent pitching for the Sox minor leaguers tonight.

April 10: White Sox @ Tigers Game Thread
BlackBetsy replied to Wedge's topic in 2006 Season in Review
QUOTE(Rowand44 @ Apr 10, 2006 -> 03:29 PM) If Bobby is going to throw strikes 96 is enough even though he's going to throw harder. I don't care how hard he's throwing if he's throwing strikes and dropping that nasty hook, he does that and he's be absolutely fine. If Bobby could throw that hook for a strike 75% of the time (he's about 30-40% right now), he could throw 90 and be the best closer in baseball. That hook is the most ridiculous thing around. But right now opposing hitters know they don't have to swing at it. So if he gets it over with 2 strikes, it's an out. I actually think he should stop throwing the 90-mph slider. It's tough on the elbow and actually does a favor to hitters that can't catch up with his 99 mph fastball. Fastball, hook and a change would be nice. -
QUOTE(pale_hose @ Apr 9, 2006 -> 09:07 PM) Well, I was very very pleases with how the Sox played today, so I would like to tell you my predictions for the upcoming series against the Tigers. I wasn't pleased at all. The Sox continue to leave men in scoring position, only have 3 home runs in 6 games - all from Jim Thome - and look generally lost at the plate. They blew two opportunities today with men on third and less than two outs. This team needs to play better fast. I take no solace out of beating the Royals one out of three.

Sox v. Kansas City, 4/7/06, Garland v. Affeldt
BlackBetsy replied to Gregory Pratt's topic in 2006 Season in Review
Pathetic effort so far - the Sox arms are coming out of the gate slow....except for Contreras, who had a rough 1st inning himself. The Royals are a joke of a team; can't start off a trip with a loss to the Royals. -
Who do you think is going to be playing at B-ham?

QUOTE(SouthSide2004 @ Apr 4, 2006 -> 12:38 AM) Here is an updated roster that they have on minorleaguebaseball.com: Catchers: Wally Rosa Gustavo Molina Carlos Lee Infielders: Josh Hansen Chris Getz Robert Valido Micah Schnurstein Rob Sasser Mike Myers Outfielders: Tom Collaro Ricardo Nanita Mark Quinn Chris Amador Pitchers: Ray Liotta Lance Broadway Corwin Malone Tyler Lumsden Ryan Rodriguez Ehran Wassermann Rusty Tucker Dwayne Pollok B.J. Lamura Fraser Dizard Brian West Jeff Little Wow, that's the worst Birmingham team prospect-wise in a long time. Liotta, Broadway, Lumsden are legitimate prospects on the pitching side, but the hitting side looks awful. Valido's good, I like Getz, but no top tier offensive prospects. -
QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 18, 2006 -> 09:13 AM) Having been a Sox fan for over 40 years, I really don't care that KW 'decimated' our ml system. He got us a World Championship. I've seen generations of prospects, one after another, come to the club and bust. He achieved what all other Sox GM's have failed to do. I don't feel another WSC is needed to justify the 'decimation' of the farm system. I'm glad he's going for it and all that, but suffer through 4 decades of futility before striking gold, and then tell how important the 'prospects' are. Agreed. Moreover, we all tend to overrate Sox prospects b/c we fall in love with them. Prospects are just that - some pan out, some don't. Jeremy Reed looked like a world beater in AA in 2003, but look at how he's struggling in the majors - he's an average to below average offensive performer in centerfield. And I thought he was the bomb. That said, Chris Young was pretty much my favorite position player prospect of the last 10 years or so. The Sox have had some pretty high-ceiling prospects in the last few years, and that's a credit to the club. Even more to their credit, they kept Brandon McCarthy, who may be the highest ceiling of them all.

Living outside Chicago as I do and only going to the Cell for perhaps 1 trip per year, I can tell you that only seeing it over a long period of time, it's become a MUCH better park from what it was in the early 90's. It's remarkable, actually. I think the green seats only help that. (I think I've been to 20 or so of the MLB parks thus far and can say that the food at the Cell is the best, without question. Nothing is really even close).

QUOTE(MarkBuehrle_TheAce @ Jan 24, 2006 -> 10:05 PM) Ok im new at all this so if ne one wants to give me some suggestions on ne thing, feel free to tell me. on to the 'sox talk', Paulie and Thome are gonna b monsters this season, Kind of like Albert Belle + Frank Thomas = World Series? The real equation is Mark Buehrle + Freddy Garcia + Jose Contreras + Jon Garland + Javier Vazquez = World Series. We learned that math this year.

Fantastic deal for the Indians. Crisp is a guy who had an abnormally good year; they are trading him at his peak. And to get one of the top 5 hitting prospects in the game PLUS a good bullpen arm in Mota is, quite frankly, amazing. I thought Boston's people were smarter than that. Plus, Marte plays 3B - the worst position for the Indians last year - meaning that he could fill a need as soon as 2006, but certainly by 2007. My initial conclusion is that the Indians of 2006 minus Millwood, minus Crisp but plus Marte, Mota, and Byrd are just as good as the 2005 Indians. Another good race in the AL Central next year.

New Tejada News: O's reportedly make a proposal...
BlackBetsy replied to maggsmaggs's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE(fathom @ Jan 4, 2006 -> 03:22 PM) I'm sure I'm in the minority here, but in order to get Tejada, I'd have no problem with the Sox doing this trade. I honestly believe Tejada is a massive upgrade over Uribe at the plate. I'd do this trade every day of the week and twice on Sunday as long as the pitching prospect is not named McCarthy. Remember, Contreras is of low value to the Sox because McCarthy is waiting in the wings AND he is a short-termer contract wise. Sweeney is a prospect at best - we are still waiting on corner OF power from him - and the pitching prospect would have to be a low level guy anyway (the Sox have traded all the good AA/high-A guys anyway). Put it at Contreras, Uribe, Sweeney and Liotta for Tejada and, say, an Oriole high-A IF prospect, and it's a deal for me (every day and twice on Sunday).
