QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Oct 22, 2014 -> 10:02 AM) But not getting caught is too difficult. Ok recruit, this booster is going to give you 50k. How does that stay hidden? Back in the day people would say, oh hey, that player drives a pretty fancy car for being a student. But that stuff can't happen anymore with the social media presence these guys have. They're too big on campus for that stuff to be kept under the rug. I can see shenanigans in the various summer league circuits. I can see a boosters giving money to a family member and that potentially staying quiet, but in very limited situations. But the crap about Anthony Davis and his family getting 200k? I don't buy it. Someone would have seen a weird purchase at some point and then it gets tweeted or emailed or whatever and a fan base will go crazy. Look at how fan bases follow recruiting, and you really think that stuff will go unnoticed? Also, the coach has to be involved. How else is the recruit going to (1) meet the booster, (2) have the "donation" be a part of the recruiting pitch? If they're not involved it's a situation where they know something is going down and they actively choose not to be a part of it but also not stop it, which is still cheating. Plausible deniability isn't a defense. The boosters know who these kids are and whether the program is recruiting them without the coach telling the boosters, in the same way you or I know X program is recruiting Y player. For the connected boosters, I can't imagine it's that hard to get an introduction with the recruit. -

QUOTE (Chilihead90 @ Oct 20, 2014 -> 01:23 AM) Also, Homeland.....come on now. I had that feeling last episode w/ Carrie, but I thought I was just being crazy. I can't believe that is actually happening now. She just continues to disgust me. Yeah that was way strange, but not nearly as screwed up as almost murdering her infant last week.

QUOTE (illinilaw08 @ Oct 17, 2014 -> 09:55 AM) I no longer live in Indiana, so I'm not nearly as knowledgeable about IU recruiting as I was previously (the curse of being surrounded by Hoosiers?). But is there a method to what Crean is doing with his recruiting? As an outsider, it seems like he has, understandably, taken a couple flyers on big guys this year, precipitated by the Fischer transfer to try to cobble together a big man rotation. But, forgive me if I'm wrong here, I don't really see any early entrants on that roster (at least not this year) unless Troy Williams finds a jump shot, or Yogi Ferrell or Blackmon sets the world on fire this year. Not meant as a troll post, I'm genuinely curious what the thought process is here... I understand oversigning by a guy, maybe even two depending on the roster, but this is getting ridiculous. Like you said, there's no early entrants on this year's roster. In order of most likely I'd put it at Williams-Blackmon-Ferrell, but even Williams I'd put at no more than 5-10%. That's a lot of transfers to expect. And if you expect that many guys to want to leave the program, there's a problem. -

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Oct 15, 2014 -> 08:49 AM) I still remember when our STs was among the best, seems like a long time ago... About having two favorite teams in the same sport, I will never understand that. I was born and raised in Chicago but I haven't been back since 89, still I would never root for another team besides the White Sox, Bulls, Bears and Blackhawks. I was even a Sting fan as a kid, though I never got into the Fire. And no, I don't want to see the Cubs ever win a WS, their fans are unbearable now, just imagine if they ever won it all. Not living in Chicago anymore would make dealing with a Cubs World Series win way more bearable. Being there for all the "fans" coming out of the woodwork for the capstone to their miracle season would be awful. -
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 02:32 PM) It's Native American Day in South Dakota (and a few other places), and I think it should be Native American Day nationally. That's not white guilt either. Minneapolis changed it to Indigenous Peoples Day this year.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 14, 2014 -> 11:17 AM) I wouldn't be surprised if in 5-10 years that is pretty common place in the work environment. I'd take one although I'd also want a regular desk in my office too. Yeah, it'd be nice to have as a sort of breakout space to do things, but not as a primary desk.

QUOTE (Brian @ Oct 13, 2014 -> 07:22 PM) I'll be the homer and say if NT played Warren now, Warren wins by 10. Too bad they can't replay it. Ha. It was only 14-7. Was that lots of a defense or just bad offense?

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Oct 13, 2014 -> 06:29 PM) It will help Stevenson that they won't have to run the gauntlet in 8A though. 7A will be much tougher because many of the best teams end up in 7A lately. I'm curious to see if New Trier can go deeper than usual. They've been playing well. Only loss was to Maine South in Park Ridge.

Big game for the Hoosiers. Still the underdog, and it's in Iowa City, but it's winnable. Need to win games like this if we want to be bowl eligible. -

While I think the Richards should be the 2C, that Saad-Shaw-Kane line was dominant for some of the playoffs. Interested to see if they keep that going. But like y'all said, it won't matter when the lines get switched up 5 minutes into the 1st period. -

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 7, 2014 -> 04:11 PM) 9th Circuit strikes down SSM ban in Idaho and Nevada. The 9th also covers Arizona, Alaska, and Montana. Kennedy issued an emergency stay though. I think the pro-SSM parties have until tonight to file an opposition. -
QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 8, 2014 -> 05:18 PM) Fun story of the day... So my roommate met this girl on tinder about 2.5 months ago, they were officially dating 2 days later. She's been living with us ever since and when I say that, she's literally been in our apartment every minute of every day as apparently she doesn't work and he works from home. Anywho, I get a text from him a couple of hrs ago saying "Miriam and I got married!!!" With a picture of them wearing their new wedding rings. WHAT. THE. f***. Wow, what the hell.

QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Oct 7, 2014 -> 04:25 PM) I think just the opposite of Illinois. They need to make their past a bigger deal. They should point to those "5 BANNERZ!!!". They had the greatest CFB player ever play at their school. There's also Dick Butkus, Kevin Hardy, Simeon Rice etc. This is a school that doesn't appreciate it's history at all. I realize it wouldn't be much more than a historical footnote now, and that's fine, but you would even realize Illinois had a history talking to just about anyone, fans or not. Not saying we should return to a national power even, but marketing sucks from making illinois look like anything but a doormat. That's even when we do win. Watch it! QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Oct 7, 2014 -> 04:04 PM) Build from within? I don't even know what that means. You need the right head coach to build ANYTHING. Haven't had that in a while. Of course you aren't going to attract high level in-state kids if you win 1 BT game in 3 years. However, they have landed some good in-state kids this year (but who knows how that will shake out with the coaching change). I don't understand the living in the past thing. Whatever guys, kick Illinois while they are down, pile on, whatever, if you hate Illinois that's fine with me. But there's no reasonable answer as to why they can't be Iowa level in the BT on a regular basis with the right coach, staff, and scheme (followed by recruiting by said coach). In fact, any program in the BT can do that right now with those things. Look at Minnesota. Right hire, and they are respectable. The right coach built up the program there. One benefit to a new coach is sometimes he builds excitement even without results. IU's recruiting under Wilson is light years better than it was before. Now, doing something with those recruits is a different story.... -

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Sep 30, 2014 -> 08:59 PM) The opinion cites blog posts. That struck me as funny. That's actually becoming increasingly common. It especially happens on hot topics like this, i.e. issues that blogs are talking about. There's often lots of good insight from a place like Volokh. Those are some pre-eminent scholars writing quality stuff, just in short bursts.
