QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Sep 6, 2014 -> 07:12 AM) I wouldn't say that. In the 3 seasons he has been healthy, he has hit at least .319 with a .400 OBP and an .860 OPS. Very few homers though, and obviously he is banged up again and playing 1B, and had a drop off from those numbers this year. Power's never's been his game, which is fine when he hit as many gaps as he did with as high as an average as he did. I do think Mauer has at least 3-4 more seasons of .315/10/75 in him...but that's not getting him in the HOF.

QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 10:35 AM) Mizzou fans are convinced they'll lose every game, but yes, I think every mizzou fan has this game circled, moreso than UCF, as the non-con that will bite them. Missouri starts slow, which I think is part of the fact that the school recruits 3stars and "coaches em up", but it takes them a while to succeed in the season. The offense looked bad, but the coaches rarely give up anything in the non con games. I think that changes vs. Toledo, because I do think they are terrified. Not Indiana?! I'm assuming the line for that one will be around -10 to -14 for Mizzou. -
Hope your wife heals quickly, Rock. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 5, 2014 -> 12:17 PM) If there's notice (or an argument for constructive notice) you better get an attorney involved. The City won't play if you don't have an attorney behind you. They'll offer you pennies, if anything. Truth. They likely just won't take a pro se claim that seriously. Not sure what the Illinois law is on that stuff, but yeah if they had notice that's huge. You have to remember that cities have lots of immunities when it comes to tort actions like this one -- another reason it's smarter to get an attorney involved. As for whether they'd settle if you have an attorney...depends on whether they had notice, but also depends on the tendencies of the city's insurer. Some will pay out over nothing, some will fight. Just depends. Also depends whether when Rock means "night" as in late at night (ie, as dark as it will get) or something more like evening. That would go toward how open and obvious the condition (unrepaired hole) was. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 4, 2014 -> 04:33 PM) It's not money crazy when your wife has to deal with the cast/boot for the short term and additional arthritic pain for the long term (depending on how severe). It's not wrong to want to be compensated for having to put up with the annoyance (and pain and suffering) of having to go through all that. You must be a Plaintiffs' attorney.

IN ban on gay marriage thrown out by US fed court
farmteam replied to southsider2k5's topic in The Filibuster
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 4, 2014 -> 05:32 PM) The social defense for anti gay marriage is a terrible one. In a party that prides itself on protecting individual freedoms, they should be looking at the fact that gay marriage hurts no one, except the people getting it. This isn't like legalizing drugs, where there can be secondary consequences for things like insurance costs or running into DWI's for those who aren't partaking. It is also flat out hypocrisy. If the family institution is so important, how come these same people aren't fighting for a constitutional amendment against divorce, or against children out of wedlock? Way more families are destroyed by divorce, and single parent family parenting, than anything else in marriage. If you want to follow the bible, follow the bible. Don't just follow the parts that get you votes, hypocrite. This reminds me of a waaaay right wing professor I had in law school. She was wildly against gay marriage, but she also went on quite a few rants about how no-fault divorce was way "worse" than gay marriage. It was one of the few times I've heard people of that ilk actually make that argument. She is actually an amazing litigator and I learned more from her about how to analyze a case than from anyone else, so I appreciated her for all that. You just had to cut through all the bulls*** and Fox News talking points to get there. -
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Sep 2, 2014 -> 07:36 PM) I'm not sure on this, but in the civil area some statute of limitations are tolled if the plaintiff/claimant is under 18. I wonder if there is any way to toll the Sol here. I'm sure there are some civil torts she committed. Fraud, intentional infliction of emotional distress, etc. I'd imagine there are other out there when you purposefully cheat someone like that. On the support argument, you almost wonder if that lie can be used against her. I think it would, like shack mentioned it would be sorta similar to unjust enrichment. Though it's more similar to the general rules about how you can't benefit from your own malevolence.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Sep 3, 2014 -> 06:18 PM) I don't see how you blame the coaching staff for that unless it becomes a pattern. At points last year they basically had a practice squad out there for a defense. In 2014, they are going to get killed in the NFL, and did. Let's hope not! -

I do think opposing team fans would plan trips around heading to Vegas to see their team. I'm not sure if there are enough fans there to sustain a team. I don't know if this is 100% accurate, but I've always had the thought that fans in the SW just aren't hockey fans in general. Not all of them would pick it up if there were a team. Wouldn't the heat in Vegas be too bad for an MLS team? -
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 08:09 AM) I'm 6'3" and don't really mind someone reclining their seat. What makes me want to start stabbing people is when someone thinks the back of your seat is a nice handle to pull themselves up. I'm also tall, the seat reclining doesn't bother me as much as having people to my sides butting their knees into my leg space.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 27, 2014 -> 11:00 AM) Wanted to follow up this post with this editorial in the NYT about judicial immunity for government entities and often times even government actors and how it makes holding people accountable for their abuses very difficult. http://www.nytimes.com/2014/08/27/opinion/...-share&_r=0 Cops need qualified immunity though, because for every legit excessive force claim there's five bulls*** ones. It's a balance. And the "reasonable officer" standard is practically the same as every other "reasonable person" standard found throughout the law, and those are everywhere.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 12:48 PM) There is a new study out that was published in Sports Health about cumulative head trauma and concussions in retired NFL football. The download was too big for me to attach here but this is a part of the conclusion section. The present study indicates that MRI detects evidence of probable chronic brain injury related to football in up to 13% of the retired players and neuropsychological testing detects evidence of isolated cognitive impairments not rising to the level of dementia and related to multiple factors, not only football/head trauma, in 24.4% of the retired players. There is no clear evidence of chronic brain damage on depression testing or neurological examination. These results need to be reconciled with the prevailing view that a career in football frequently results in chronic brain damage. The CTE findings in post-mortem studies may not be as clinically relevant as once thought. It's like the MRI studies that show up to 60% of people who never had back or leg pain show positive for bulging discs. Here is the reference if people can get access. Sports Health: A Multidisciplinary http://sph.sagepub.com/content/6/5/384 The online version of this article can be found at: DOI: 10.1177/1941738114540270 Sports Health: A Multidisciplinary Approach 2014 6: 384 originally published online 25 June 2014 Ira R. Casson, David C. Viano, E. Mark Haacke, Zhifeng Kou and Danielle G. LeStrange Is There Chronic Brain Damage in Retired NFL Players? Neuroradiology, Neuropsychology, and Neurology Examinations of 45 Retired Players Edit: maybe this should be moved to the sports injury section. It dealt with the NFL so I out it here first. 13% is still unacceptably high, though.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Aug 25, 2014 -> 07:11 PM) Soxtalkers, this is why I've been mostly absent the past month. Due to the success I've pulled off as Marketing Director with my company, the investors wanted me to make the services available to the public. Thus, Marqana was born. www.marqana.com Lots of work, b****es. Obviously, if any of you know businesses in need of legit marketing services, you now have a guy. I promise, no sharing of fake Derrick Rose stories for hits. Any feedback, of course, is quite welcome. Everything I've done in goofing off prior to focusing on work, then focusing on work, has led to this. I am proud of my baby and my team. Give me some love. That's pretty studly. I like the feel. Only thing I noticed is that there might be a typo on the "team" page, not sure. First sentence is "After testing agency after agency to disastrous result, our software company decided to take marketing in-house." "Result" might be grammatically correct (not positive), but "results" seems more appropriate? Like I said, not sure, so thought I'd bring it to your attention.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 23, 2014 -> 11:05 AM) It used to mean more. Now with pretty much anything being nationally televised, leaving home isn't nearly as big of a deal as it was even a generation ago. You see a lot more people rooting for teams that they have no geographic connection to. I think there's still something to wanting to play in a certain region or conference, though. Growing up I always enjoyed watching Big Ten games more than random Pac-10 or ACC or SEC or Big 12 games. And I had a rooting interest in the smaller schools, like the MVC. -
QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 23, 2014 -> 11:15 AM) So Phil made a wager with a spectator that he would hit a green from the s*** after a poor drive...paid him what looked like $100 after he missed That's awesome.

Can't imagine the Wolves doing much better than they did in that deal. Might even have to go to a few games this year. They have dirt cheap tickets ($5-$10) on Wednesday nights.

QUOTE (Soxfest @ Aug 21, 2014 -> 07:20 PM) I am tired of Eric Holder picking and choosing what he wants and does not want to enforce. Worst AG in US history. Depending on the source of the law, he (well, the President) may have that right.

QUOTE (Heads22 @ Aug 22, 2014 -> 10:19 PM) So do we like Baylor or Oklahoma to win the Big 12 this year? I'm not sure how the Irish tie into that race at all. Well Scott Drew doesn't coach Baylor's football team, so they've got a shot to actually perform when it counts. Was that Oklahoma RB who was suspended for the year actually going to be a factor? -
QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 20, 2014 -> 08:53 PM) The lefty pitcher...Austin something, is just nasty...was throwing in the high 70's...he hits righty...interesting. Did you see the kid Las Vegas had going against Chicago on Sunday? Sat at 76 the whole game. They couldn't do much against him. I assume she threw more than 25 pitches tonight, so Mo'Ne Davis can't pitch against Chicago tomorrow.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 05:45 PM) it's all about your swing speed, attack angle and dynamic loft... I'm a terrible golfer (happy when I break 100), but for some reason I'm able to hit the ball a decent distance. 150 is a 9-iron for me. If I only I could get that hitting it straight thing down. And also if I made a better effort to get out there more.

They're fun to watch. That closer, Marquis Jackson, is damn good. Between regionals and the LLWS, he's thrown 7 2/3 IP with 1 ER, 1 BB and 20 K. Yes, 20 strikeouts in 23 outs.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Aug 19, 2014 -> 05:14 PM) I personally would uphold my acceptance to the smaller company. Not only for some personal honor but also because that other company seems like a mess. Spot on. Even if you were willing to sacrifice a bit of integrity, that other company doesn't look like a good situation to step into.

John Oliver talked about Ferguson last night, and specifically about police militarization EDIT: Interesting point about how the police should never be pointing their guns at a person unless prepared to fire. Starts a bit after 10:00
