  1. QUOTE (scs787 @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 05:40 PM) Greatest (Non Warped tour) show I've ever been to was Rise Against/Thrice/Gaslight Anthem/Alkaline Trio....Gonna be real hard to ever trump that for me. I'm seeing Gaslight Anthem again in October. Can't wait. Against Me is opening, too.
  2. I need some similar questions, Jenks. Let me know what you find out. As soon as I'm done with the bar, figuring out loans is my next big project. I have a large sum (six figures) from undergrad and law school, some of which were private Sallie Mae loans at the height of the recession which carry absolutely outrageous interest rates. My general thought was to get a loan to pay them all off at once, and then just pay that loan off. It would be one payment, and would have a lower interest rate than most, if not all, my loans. Not sure if that counts as "consolidation" if it's not through one of the government programs. Most of my loans are federal (all the law school debt, plus some from undergrad), but all are now serviced by Sallie Mae. Not sure if that changes anything.
  3. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 04:32 PM) Rise Against is back. Now back to your regularly scheduled Music Thread where no one really converses, we all just talk about what we like. :-D I saw them open for Foo Fighters a few years ago. Good show.
  4. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 15, 2014 -> 02:34 PM) But does that include an MRI on every pitcher's arm? Somehow I doubt that. Maybe not, but I'd be surprised if it didn't include one on the arm of a kid who is going to go top 10. And if the physicals didn't include an MRI before, they will now.
  5. Yeah there's something way too fishy about all this. Hell, even if the law is otherwise on the landlord's side, that's way too much money for little-to-no consideration for a court to actually enforce. The hassle on going through with that, however, is another story.
  6. One thing confuses me in all this -- why was this only discovered after he was signed? Did they not do the physical beforehand? Was he just signed pending physical, and that's when this was discovered? I just find it unlikely, in this age of hypersensitivity concerning pitchers' health, that a club even makes an offer to such a high-profile pick without having a doctor take a look at him first. My point being, if Aiken signed on the dotted line when Houston already had a chance to conduct a physical, then too bad for Houston. Buyer beware.
  7. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 03:10 PM) If you think you have a decent reason to contest it, report it to your credit card company. They'll usually give you the money back and then do an investigation. Yep. Just make sure your girlfriend does it within 60 days of first receiving the bill that the charge appears on. Getting charged for services you don't receive is considered a "billing error" and the credit card company can't make you pay it.
  8. QUOTE (Boogua @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 01:31 PM) Sounds like mudiay will be going overseas instead of playing for smu next year. Eligibility issues. Damn. IU's best non-conference home game was either Pitt or SMU. Definitely takes SMU down a notch.
  9. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 09:45 PM) Is that Watterson? I hope that guy pops up out of nowhere with a few books worth of comic strips some day QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 10:00 PM) No, just fan art. Me too. That'd be the best gift ever, honestly. I still read the entire C&H series yearly. I can't wait until if/when I have a kid so I can plop the collection on his/her lap at the age of 6 and say "enjoy". You guys saw this from about a month ago, right?
  10. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 14, 2014 -> 09:11 AM) Using a term/word =/= "defeating" people you disagree with or actively trying to ruin their lives/careers. Hence why I still don't understand what's so funny/ironic about what Alpha has said. He's been talking generally about personal attacks. Gaystapo is a personal attack.
  11. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Jul 9, 2014 -> 12:04 PM) Hey, stop calling them indiana. Hey now, we have a decent shot at a bowl this year! Maybe we can make it to our 2nd in 21 years!
  12. QUOTE (bmags @ Jul 3, 2014 -> 08:28 AM) Scalia's finest decision - green. Not sure if anything is as bad as Lawrence.
  13. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 1, 2014 -> 11:13 AM) As a person running the business though, you are running the company based on how you think the company should be run. I think it's perfectly logical to extend that to any personal beliefs you have. As Alito pointed out, there are other circumstances where the "corporation" does things that "corporations" shouldn't be doing, like donating to charity. That has nothing to do with business operations or making a profit. It has to do with some belief by the management/ownership of the company to do something nice. We provide that company with tax benefits. Should we not because corporations are not people and should only be considered a legal entity performing "corporate" activities? Maybe on some level. It also has a hell of a lot to do with making the corporation look good. That's a corporate activity. Also, we generally want to incentivize charitable giving. The First Amendment says we neither incentivize nor disincentivize practicing a religion.
  14. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 30, 2014 -> 07:53 PM) Back to your piercing argument, here's the main difference: the statute at issue defines persons to include corporations. It specifically exempts certain corporate entities (Churches, religious organizations, charities, etc., e.g. not-for-profit corps) BASED ON RELIGIOUS BELIEFS. I think the holding is pretty limited. As with every decision, of course there will be a million attempts to find loop holes, but I don't see this being a big game changer in litigation against corps and their owners. Right. There are plenty of instances where corporations are treated as people, because it's easier and in many ways makes a lot of sense. But it's a legal fiction. A corporation is not actually a person. There are some rights and privileges that should be held by only actually persons, not fictional ones. As for your second paragraph, I think you're right. There is a decent chance that some district courts will run wild with it (as Ginsburg alluded to in her dissent), but I think only a small chance that this decision has a big impact on a precedent-setting level.
  15. QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jun 30, 2014 -> 12:15 PM) Good decision. I don't think it's right to force a company to provide things to its employees that religiously they do not agree with. A corporation can't religiously agree or disagree with anything. It's a corporation.

    2014 TV thread

The Leftovers was intriguing enough for me to keep watching, but it was somewhat confusing. Are all those people in the white robes tied into the cult leader that the Police Chief's son is gravitating toward?

    2014 TV thread

Pretty disappointed in Girl Meets World. A lot of that stems from the Disney tween-ness, though. And Topanga was barely there.
  18. Impressive to survive that long with 10-men.
  19. QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Jun 29, 2014 -> 01:31 PM) Soccer is my fifth favorite sport, I don't follow league play that much, I know in general what going on but I don't even have a fave team. I tune in to WCs, Copa America and such but the Bears losing in the playoffs hits me harder than Mexico losing in the WC. Anyways, I have no idea why you're being a dick, Mexico didn't choke, in the end they gave up the initiative to a world class team and you can't do that. Laugh all you want right now, I'll have the last laugh, especially if you lose to a crap Belgium team. It doesn't matter how good the other team is, going from from up 1-0 in the 88th minute to still losing in regulation is choking.
  20. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 28, 2014 -> 11:30 AM) Considering that is what got it started, I would call it the final one. All of the other scrimishes and pacts etc, all came before that. Oh, I see what you meant now. I thought you meant it in the same way as the "last shot fired of WWI" instead of the last event preceding the outbreak of war.
  21. QUOTE (TheTruth05 @ Jun 28, 2014 -> 10:29 AM) I think and hope so as well, if these teams play the way they played in their groups then I think Chile can pull this one out. Oh God we agree with Row, Brazil is going to win 6-0.
  22. QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jun 28, 2014 -> 12:27 AM) Yeah, typically hockey players from North Dakota suck. ...I'm a Gopher hockey fan.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jun 28, 2014 -> 09:54 AM) 100 years ago today was the final trigger of WWI First, you mean? IIRC, Franz Ferdinand was assassinated June 28, 1914.
  24. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Jun 28, 2014 -> 09:35 AM) I get it. I think Chile gets Brazil today. Agreed. Chile and Colombia advance today.
  25. He grew up a Blackhawks fan. He's going to play for North Dakota though. Ew.
