  1. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 07:57 PM) So this is a punt and a major rebuild But Marty they said we would compete in 2014. Remember? I think we have the potential to be a force next season though
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 12, 2013 -> 04:31 PM) I'm completely ok with that. Competition is good for certain. Esp at the catcher spot
  3. QUOTE (Baron @ Dec 6, 2013 -> 02:13 AM) Funny thing is I've actually seen a few people praise us for this move...more pen help isnt a bad thing. I must say though(off topic)....Jesse Crain's market is pretty dead. I would still like Jesse Crain in a Sox uniform and being injured last season might keep his price down a bit
  4. QUOTE (flavum @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 06:13 PM) Seems like good timing to give Semien an opportunity to play 150 games. See what he's got. Let's see what the Sox do in the next week. Beckham or Alexei could be gone--although I'm not sure who wants them. I hope Gordo and Alexei are with the Sox in 2014 even though I could see one being traded.
  5. QUOTE (Marty34 @ Dec 4, 2013 -> 03:31 AM) Cano wouldn't sell a single ticket. He's a luxury the Sox can't afford. The price for even one big name free agent is just plain crazy. Folks wanted Ellsbury and he signed for $20 plus million a year with the Yanks? He isn't worth that much. I am sure the fans will now clamor for Granderson. What might he command in salary? There are good players available for smaller amounts of money. But, Konerko just freed up like $10M with his signing
  6. a healthy Konerko can be a productive player. Now the question in my mind is Dunn being shopped and will he go somewhere else? Stranger things have happened and we seem to be flying under the proverbial radar as far as trades and free agent signings are concerned.
  7. The Sox must really be flying under that trade radar if this is what we have to discuss LOL
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 25, 2013 -> 01:07 AM) I love these threads. I know. Panic mode because things are getting done by others. I think free agency fundamentally changed player movement. Gone are the days when Bill Veeck sat in the lobby at the winter meetings with a sign "Open for Business." Teams can pay for a player they need instead of trading their good players and prospects away for someone. I think often they go that route first. Plus they can get a proven impact player. We have needs at possibly 3B, Catcher and maybe CF and relief pitching. I haven't seen the deals yet that had players involved that were a good fit for the Sox. Winter meetings will be interesting.
  9. Cross off McCann. We need AJP anyway. The Yanks have money to burn still
  10. There is sure some overpaying for middle of the road talent so far
  11. QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Nov 17, 2013 -> 05:46 PM) Kenny Williams I saw KW hit a homer at old Comiskey in 1987 when the Brewers played the Sox
  12. QUOTE (YASNY @ Nov 17, 2013 -> 01:58 AM) The point is to bring up some names the have not been thought of lately and maybe, just maybe, start some discussion. Memories or whatever. It's going to be a long off season. You should be more active on the site
  13. If he makes the bigs in 2014 I think it will be at 3B or as super sub. I would not be averse to seeing Kepp traded
  14. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Nov 14, 2013 -> 10:42 PM) There have been times where Viciedo looked incredibly good at the plate, but most of the time he has looked like a hacking, impatient free swinger. I wish he would use the approach he used off the DL last year at all times. It may have been him being tenative to swing, but I have never seen him look so good at the plate. I have to disagree with Marty. Viciedo has been a free swinger and seems to be trying to kill everything. At one time tis seemed to please some of us but seeing him flail away has worn tin. He is to blame as he hasn't produced. But, I think he has the talent. Maybe Abreu's and Ramirez' presence might turn him around? Who knows? But, it seems that when we start talking Sox players so much negativity surfaces. I am surprised that as fans we still have a team to root for. It's like they are all worthless and can only fetch a minor league player in return provided we throw in some cash
  15. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 06:45 PM) Defensively Uribe might be an upgrade when you figure Keppinger in, but Gillaspie looked like one of the Sox's more reliable defenders last year to my eyes until he fell off a cliff at the end of the season (note the context in that he's getting compared to the rest of the team). I think he has room to grow into a decent defensive piece, but I have no idea what started happening to him around that 3 error game. I think Gillaspie was acceptable at 3B for certain. He looked good at times. I do NOT think he is the 3B answer though. I was disappointed in Keppinger. My feeling is Semien gets his chance at 3B in 2014 and maybe it's a Semien/Gillaspie platoon. Any bets?
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 13, 2013 -> 07:42 PM) I'd be willing to take him if we can extend him and buy out 1-2 years of FA. I know that isn't Boras's style but I'd be willing to pay a slight premium price to do so. Given that we'd have to extend him I'm not sure I'd be willing to move Quintana in said deal. Might be a moot point with Quintana as Hahn pretty much rates him untouchable. But, the MLB Trade Rumors also kind of debunk the Orioles wanting to trade Wieters at the same time it say he may be offered. I think it is just one of those "no one is untouchable for the right deal things"
  17. QUOTE (greg775 @ Nov 12, 2013 -> 05:58 AM) I'd give anything to have Uribe replace the Kepp/Gillaspie duo for one year. I think defensively Uribe would be an upgrade at 3B. Is he a starter though? People are too quick to say he has no role on this team. But, he sure did on the Giants and the Dodgers and they were winners. Uribe could be a super sub but he seems to always end up being a starter on good teams. I would not be so quick to dismiss the guy.
  18. Granderson rejected $14.1M from the Yankees. They might offer more but even if they don't do you really think the Sox will? I don't. Granderson is a no go for the Sox IMO
  19. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Nov 11, 2013 -> 05:52 PM) barf I hope you used a bag
  20. QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Nov 11, 2013 -> 05:56 PM) Bringing back AJ is a step in the wrong direction. If they were close to being competitive and had a solid offense already, you could at least think about it...but not in the situation they find themselves in right now. It's the same reason the Cubs would be a little crazy to sign Ellsbury or Choo. Tanaka at least makes a bit more sense because you're always going to need quality starting pitching to build around. I don't follow your reasoning. Why would some other catcher be the answer to our turning things around? We were pretty successful with AJP behind the plate
  21. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Nov 11, 2013 -> 05:15 PM) I think Sox will bring AJ back. It is my hope they do bring AJ back. He is a motivator and a pro. Plus he is the LH bat. He can also bring along Phegley and Flowers, even though I am not sure if they will be of the caliber starting catcher we expect. I think we made a mistake in not keeping AJ last year. People might say the money wasn't there, but this year it should be. Now will management admit they were wrong in letting him walk and/or will AJ want to return?
  22. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 8, 2013 -> 07:08 PM) I think the problem is that Alexei winds up significantly changing his approach when he's in the #2 slot. His power suddenly seemed to re-appear when he moved down in the order later this year. Semien to 3B or as the super IF sub. Beckham to 3B if they think Semien is better at 2B, but ole Gordo just got named the defensive 2B star. I would rater go or someone via free agency like Uribe at 3B. Is Mr. AJ Perzynski available for catching duties? I want a team with some fire and I think AJ can motivate as well as produce. I think Gillaspie and Keppinger are trade bait or Conor is a fill in
  23. I think the Sox would be making a big mistake in trading Beckham. He has a ton of talent and was showing it last year for certain until he was injured. You trade a person of his caliber and get what in return? Plus how do you find a replacement at 2B? Semien got a showcase for a month. L Garcia also. I like Semien but I think 3B is his spot or he takes the role Keppinger was supposed to fill. I don't think you do these stories with the idea it builds up trade possibilities. There are so many posters who call players seasons disappointing and let's talk specifically of Beckham. What are the realistic stats we should be seeing? Can one player be the teams salvation? It is a team effort and all pieces fit and make the contribution. You aren't going to have 25 all-stars on the team regardless of how much the Yankees, Angels and Dodgers tried to buy them. Beckham needs to stay. You don't create a hole in the team because you seem to have some pie in the sky idea of what the player should be doing productionwise
  24. I think I will predict we must be hard up already for 2014 Sox baseball when we are predicting uniform numbers
