  1. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 14, 2017 -> 06:59 PM) Sale trade was fair, no complains there agreed...none whatsoever. In 3 years it'll look like shear brilliance IMO....
  2. QUOTE (greg775 @ Dec 9, 2017 -> 04:25 PM) I agree. Baseball is doomed. Millenials don't get baseball and actually despise it. It's way too boring and slow paced because of the umpires' refusal to care about the game and obey the rules and speed up the game. Those playoff games took forever and people just don't want 4-hour baseball games. Pretty much you can bank on the first three innings taking an hour. The next three taking an hour and the final three taking about 2 hours. Or at least 90 minutes for a 3.5 hour game, sometimes 4 hours. Ridiculous. You make a great comparison with the NBA. Only thing that can save baseball is the "tank" factor, though. Now, teams' fans can embrace 4-6 year rebuilds and feel they truly have a shot. They can laugh at those who laugh at their record and point to the rebuild. "Wait til next year" is a very valuable tool in marketing of fans. Always has been. And now with all the tank jobs, wait til next year is huge. At least there's a "reason" for teams sucking and fans love sucking if it's part of a rebuild. Very astute of front offices to embrace the build if they don't have the $$ to compete. Meanwhile, the rich will truly dominate like you said. I get where people think baseball is boring...but I actually find football woefully boring anymore...especially when you're at the game. You're sitting around in your seat half time waiting for tv timeouts...or some ridiculous review. 3 and out...5 minutes of commercials. zzzzzzzzzz....I'll take baseball any day.
  3. kinda surprised the Yankees actually did this....just for the fact they just recently got out from under the albatross contract that was ARod's that most Yankee fans bemoaned. But the fact they're not really giving up squat for prospects eases taking on a contract like that. At some point they'll have the same feeling with Stanton that they did with ARod IMO...
  4. QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Dec 6, 2017 -> 12:17 PM) Rafael Palmerio attempting MLB comeback. Even though this will go nowhere....wow https://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2017/12/rafa...b-comeback.html geezus...hahaaaaa. That's why there's MSBL Raffy.
  5. I'm glad Hahn is standing firm in demanding a haul. Abreu still puts up MVP type numbers...so settling for a Cardinals decent prospect and a couple of leftover outfielders ain't cuttin' it in my book. If somebody wants JA...they'll have to cough it up.
  6. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 2, 2017 -> 03:41 PM) Yeah Hector Rondon would be my first target with the shape the Sox pen is in. Yes please. Wasn't he Ricky's closer?....was Welington there with him as well?
  7. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 05:04 PM) Anyone think that we could get someone to take a trade flier on Kevan Smith? Give us back a reliever candidate or something like that? I'd hope so..but who knows...not sure I'd hold my breath. I honestly didn't realize he was 29 years old...for some reason I thought he was like 25 or 26 or so.
  8. Wow...great signing! MLB article states that Renteria was a big reason he decided to come here also.
  9. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 29, 2017 -> 03:43 PM) I still think at this point Tennessee will end up with someone "better" than we expect, but what a crapshow. Starting to think some crazy "big name" retired player a la herm edwards start to get the calls. I read a name that makes perfect sense for Tennessee I think...USC Trojan and former Vol QB Tee Martin. He wants the job. He's been having OTJ training the past handful of years. Loves the school. I'd say why not Tee Martin?
  10. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 29, 2017 -> 08:38 PM) Edwards is going to need a lot of help recruiting in today’s college atmosphere. Recruiting is 75 percent of what makes you good. completely agree. And that was one of Ray Anderson's main points of contention with Graham (which he did ok...not great...but ok). IMO...Graham was more about "molding" young men...to become better men...better students...better sons...etc. It wasn't strictly all about W's with him. He and Anderson just had a personality clash I think. It'll be interesting to see what Herm Edwards will actually bring to the table in terms of recruiting.
  11. QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Nov 29, 2017 -> 07:37 AM) Because cbb refs are awful at their job and largely deserve criticism at every oppurtunity. Its the Jay Bilas line of thought. Last night for example, two plays went to the monitor that are unreviewable, overturning calls on the floor. The refs decided to institute full on replay randomly in a game for reasons known only to them. Nothing, of course, will come of it. Unlike the other 5 major sports leagues, there is no oversight committee or conferences that will come down on it. Yeah...I've never seen that in any sport...EVER. How do you honestly "take a foul away"? lol...it was pretty comical. I wish they'd just get rid of replay altogether...seeing how they waste way too much time...and half the time they still get the s*** wrong. Last nite was a first tho....
  12. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 29, 2017 -> 07:18 PM) And I like the hire sorta! But saying that type of “name” non traditional hire may be next. it's either a home run....or huge flop. Supposedly he's keeping the coordinators (which I'm happy with)...
  13. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 29, 2017 -> 03:43 PM) Starting to think some crazy "big name" retired player a la herm edwards start to get the calls. hand off...he's ASU's! Pretty sure that's been in the works for quite some time (between the AD and Edwards...who were buddies. Actually the AD used to be Edwards agent IIRC).
  14. QUOTE (danman31 @ Nov 28, 2017 -> 04:01 AM) Man, I love the lunacy in the last couple pages of this thread. College football fans are an overly defensive bunch who can't see straight when they look in the mirror. For going 7-5? yeah...Todd Graham at ASU goes 7-5...and beats rival UofAnus and loses his job. I personally think Graham and AD Ray Anderson just had a major personality conflict. I'd have been ok if they'd have fired him last year...but this year...no. They've had different coordinators 3 years in a row...now this will be 4 years. Graham also wasn't just about Ws either. The grad rate and GPA for everyone on the team has climbed significantly since he's been here. And also the number of undisciplined penalties they used to have. I don't claim Todd Graham as a perfect coach...but for ASU...I thought he did a pretty good job. Would have liked to have seen a bit better recruiting wins....
  15. QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Nov 24, 2017 -> 11:56 AM) Jose Abreu is gonna be our David Ortiz/Jose Bautista. I think an extension of 4 years/70 million is beneficial for everyone involved. Stick Abreu at DH in his later years and he lengthens that lineup a ton. I get exploring trades, but unless the right deal comes around like a Sale/Q type deal, I want Abreu around for this rebuild to be the captain and a mentor to the young players. this. Unless you get a dramatic overpay for Jose...no thanks.
  16. QUOTE (knightni @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 11:43 AM) If they can put Selig in, anyone can go in. I still think it's a travesty that Dick Allen isn't in the Hall of Fame...kind of a joke really. So yeah...when some of these other people (especially Selig) gets put in...I'm pretty much "who cares".
  17. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 12:07 PM) It's hard for me to get super excited about The Punisher. I loved the comic as a kid but there's not a ton of substance to the character/storyline. He's pretty much an earlier version of John Wick...which is essentially cool but I feel like there's not a lot you can get out of it. Hopefully, I'm proven wrong. I felt the same way...was pretty meh about it....and gotta tell I couldn't have been more wrong. It was AMAZING!!! Absolutely loved it!....
  18. QUOTE (whitesoxfan99 @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 03:40 PM) And looks like a superstar now. I guarantee the 76ers don't care that they passed on any of the mediocre players that went after him just because he missed two years. Teams aren't going to pass on Porter unless it is pretty clear the back injury will take away a lot of his athleticism. Depends on where you're picking. If you're a lottery team...do you risk it? Hope the Bulls say no honestly if it got to that. I'd give my left nut for the Bulls to get Ayton!
  19. QUOTE (bmags @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 05:28 PM) He's not a third tier coach that would have hurt a player to stay with him. He's a coach that has relied on a slow pace too often. There's a difference. he didn't do squat in the PAC with a pretty good roster. Agree with the Ron Zook of college hoops assessment. He's just not very good X's and O's...good recruiter...sure.
  20. QUOTE (hi8is @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 06:02 PM) My rational is as such: 1.) These guys have already got in some cashes a big pay day which they get to keep - so money might not be the biggest motivating factor. 2.) They may be drawn to our team and be sold on our future opportunities. That's what I was thinking too (they got to keep their bonus)...and haven't seen any definitive rules set yet. Also...this was from the Trib a few weeks ago about money available: The Rangers can agree to a maximum $3,535,000 signing bonus from their pool that covers July 2 through next June 15, according to figures compiled by Major League Baseball and obtained by The Associated Press. New York can pay $3.25 million and the Twins $3,245,000. Just three other teams can give him a seven-figure signing bonus: Pittsburgh ($2,266,750), Miami ($1.74 million) and Seattle ($1,570,500). After that comes Philadelphia ($900,000), Milwaukee ($765,000), Arizona ($731,250), Baltimore ($660,000), Boston ($462,000) and Tampa Bay ($440,500). Twelve teams are capped at $300,000 as penalties for exceeding their signing bonus pool under baseball's previous collective bargaining agreement, which did not have a cap: Atlanta, the Chicago Cubs and White Sox, Cincinnati, Houston, Kansas City, the Los Angeles Dodgers, Oakland, St. Louis, San Diego, San Francisco and Washington. Other clubs have even less available: Detroit ($159,500), the Los Angeles Angels ($150,000), the New York Mets ($105,000), Toronto ($50,000), and Cleveland and Colorado ($10,000 apiece). What are the penalties btw?
  21. Remake of Death Wish with Bruce Willis and Dean Norris (Hank from Breaking Bad) looks pretty good.
  22. QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 01:07 PM) It's hard for me to get super excited about The Punisher. I loved the comic as a kid but there's not a ton of substance to the character/storyline. He's pretty much an earlier version of John Wick...which is essentially cool but I feel like there's not a lot you can get out of it. Hopefully, I'm proven wrong. My son and I got sucked into the Punisher the other night. It's pretty damn good...I was pleasantly surprised.
  23. QUOTE (hi8is @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 04:48 PM) Haven't seen this mentioned here yet since the announcement today, but the following information makes me believe that we have a significant chance to sign any of these players... and that we have a chance to lure multiple names. I would have thought that was almost a given...not sure how they could expect these kids to cough it back up. Hopefully this does help the Sox chances...
  24. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 04:12 PM) I havent seen anyone confirm that the penalty is still in effect for these kids, but even assuming it is, so many teams have money tied up with commitments for next year and to go after Ohtani this year, we might be able to get somebody still. If Ohtani doesn't sign by Jan 15, then these teams would have to decide if they want to save money and go for Ohtani, spend it on these free agents, or renege on commitments for next year and use that money for these free agents. There are also a couple international guys left from this period that havent signed and now might not be able to get more than $300k with so much talent in the market and limited bonus pools left. I don't know why the hell any penalty would/should be in affect since there was already pool money (kinda/sorta) used to sign these kids in the first place. They need to sort this out fairly quickly. Doesn't seem right that suddenly you have 13 CURRENT MLB INTL prospects that were signed...that are available and you're handcuffing teams.
  25. QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 03:26 PM) Still don't understand why they just don't have an international draft like other sports. that would make too much sense....
