NBA Thread 2013-2014
I think there is a tremendous risk in acquiring Dwight, but I sure can't blame Houston for taking it. If it doesn't work out as planned, they aren't going to be worse off than they were before.

Healthy Eating Thread
Yeah I think it can be a successful means to lose weight. The trick is being able to stick to it while it is going on (especially difficult at first, many folks I know take fat burners to curb appetite to enable this sort of restriction) and then being able to keep your progress once you stop, because some people will simply binge once they are allowed to have carbs again. I would suggest not doing it for more than a month at a time and I would suggest doing a carb "refeed" once a week.

QUOTE (Jake @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 05:55 PM) We're going to have to sit through Cubs post-game while our game starts. Ugh. I've noticed we do that to the Cubs when they play on the West Coast too. I'm happy for both teams to give up their post-game shows if it conflicts with the next game. ...I guess not?

People with poor insulin sensitivity will see especially good results with keto compared to more balanced plans. People that have been overweight or obese may be permanently desensitized to insulin FWIW

Managing a Rebuilding Team Wouldn't Scare Ventura
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 04:41 PM) I missed the game but supposedly he had quite the baserunning blunder last week in that 18-10 game or whatever it wound up being. Yeah, he was benched the next game. RV talked about it. The next game he went out and had a good day at the plate and a made a couple diving catches in the next game. My guess is that this a planned day off because he's been looking a hair better lately.

Managing a Rebuilding Team Wouldn't Scare Ventura
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 04:11 PM) I know you're looking at the Sox competing next year and surely I'd love for that to happen but chances are it won't. Just too many holes to fill and question marks. After the trade deadline chances are the only thing the Sox will have going for them is starting pitching. Everything else will a big IF and 3 year deals to 30YO+ players shouldn't be considered unless the Sox pick up some sure things at the trade deadline ,which likely isn't happening. I think the White Sox will/should plan to definitely compete in 2015. This means you start adding pieces next year, but not all of them. Next year is one of those "if everything goes right" years. You fill a hole or two with veterans that you think are worth building around, keep some decent players from this year (like every player that hasn't yet reached free agency). Then you can roll the dice with guys in a couple spots - unless there is a total disaster in the second half, I think Phegley is a shoo-in as a guy you let develop into next season. Maybe, if we're lucky, somebody like Trayce might look ready for the outfield. We'll have to see. Might get somebody in trade that deserves a shot to develop.

Managing a Rebuilding Team Wouldn't Scare Ventura
QUOTE (fathom @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 11:38 AM) Based on the seasons they're having, McCann/Utley/Morales will almost definitely be trying to get multi-year deals. Utley seems like a lock for the Dodgers, in my opinion. Granderson's the only one that might take a 1-yr deal to try and raise his stock again. Are we not allowed to give out multi-year deals? I'd like to lock up one of Morales/Pence/Choo to about a 3 year deal. Signing two (would have to Morales + another) might be a stretch, but we'll have the money. Will be interesting to see how the market goes. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 12:03 PM) I'm not crazy about a guy with a career OPS of .714 playing 1B. I like Viciedo and think he can be a good hitter at some point, and there's no reason to get rid of him heading into next year, but he's walking on thin ice. I'd like to try our best to keep him in the OF as long as possible. Moving to 1B is always an option, but moving back to OF from 1B is not something you see go well very often. He's bad, but he's not unplayable in the OF at this point. I'd feel more comfortable with him at 1B if we had more certainty with his bat; we don't. You don't want to give up on Dayan, but you don't want a 1B that can't hit. I'd much rather have a bad LF than a bad 1B.

I think they're trying to see which of these 25-28 year old outfielders is best fit to be a backup on the big league club. They wouldn't mind somebody really breaking out and being a starting caliber player either, of course. My feeling is that of the players, Casper is most capable of catching on as a real-life big league starter. Danks and Tekotte are probably pretty similar in terms of their likely use as fourth outfielders.

Will the Sox Eat Salary to Bring More Talent
John Danks is one guy I wouldn't mind getting rid of for cash reasons if it means we keep Peavy. We can trade him from the rotation as that is a position of strength.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 11:23 AM) And Peavy, if he can stay healthy and we time it right. Maybe we can also bring back Gavin Floyd and flip him (via waivers) in August if he's not ready before July 31st. I'm not sure if he's going to be pitching 12 months from now, yet

Phegley Up/Gimenez Gone
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 10:27 AM) I have to root for a Hoosier? Ugh. Took at a glance at his minor league numbers, is there any reason to think 2013 isn't a fluke? .966 OPS this year, previous best season was a .743. There is some reason to think it's a fluke. On the other hand, he developed a serious illness shortly after becoming a pro that caused him to miss nearly an entire season. He then continued to be fairly aggressively promoted despite not being all that successful at the plate, most likely due to his age. He had dealt with some injuries in years past as well. This is his first year repeating a level, so it very well may be that he's just finally gotten a chance to be healthy and comfortable.

Managing a Rebuilding Team Wouldn't Scare Ventura
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 5, 2013 -> 10:17 AM) That team could just as easily get hurt or get old and win 70 games with all kinds of money tied up. The Sox, if they do sign free agents, really need to limit it to about 1-2. Agree. I'd like to see them bring in an important piece or two, but there's no reason to dump $50 million or so into the 2014 team. You'll take a few risks with young players alongside the few new faces. If we don't win, which is probably likely, you have the chance to trade away a guy like Dunn and get some more prospects and continue gradually mixing in FA vets and young players in 2015 (hard to prognosticate that far when we don't know how young players are going to be doing)

Phegley Up/Gimenez Gone
QUOTE (Knuckles @ Jul 4, 2013 -> 06:39 PM) Any team out there needs a catcher? My friend thinks this callup means end of Flowers. I sure wouldn't think we'd call Josh up to not play. I would have been happy to let Flowers have a chance to play a bit longer, but not with Phegley on the bench. If Phegley is here, he has to play.
