Technology catch-all thread
QUOTE (Y2HH @ Jul 2, 2013 -> 02:01 PM) Ah, thanks for reminding me why HTC shouldn't be trusted, HTC. http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2013/07/htc...ontent=My+Yahoo I had heard a good response to this, which is that it almost has to be the carrier (T-Mobile has it exclusively) that forced this to happen. HTC is doing the update for the One X, which is incredibly similar and came out at the same time. HTC has pretty much done all of the work to make the update work on the One S, but it's likely that T-Mobile doesn't have enough of them out in the wild for it to be worth finishing the update on their end. Also, these articles keep billing it as a flagship when it was definitely not a flagship device. It was on one carrier and released along with the One X, the actual flagship. It's a concern, but HTC has been better than everybody but Samsung at updates (even though this article argues differently). And Samsung has TouchWiz, which sucks (subjectively speaking) Nexus/Google Edition devices still prevail. HTC One Google Edition is definitely the best phone out there at this point, if I had the upfront $ I would have gotten it. Couldn't bite on Nexus 4, not at all impressed by its hardware. Nexus 5 will release too long after my contract expires, unfortunately.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (CaliSoxFanViaSWside @ Jul 2, 2013 -> 02:03 PM) I'm just bothered by committing to Hinrich and Mohammed mostly. Mohammed saw no minutes until the injuries really piled up and Hinrich's value is tied to playing time and if he can't stay healthy he's worthless. Plus if there's one constant criticism of Thib's, who everyone seems to love, it's that he plays a guy like Deng too many minutes which takes a toll eventually and might tie into all the injuries the Bulls had last year. Nazr showed himself to be a more than capable backup C last year, though it was clear he had to earn Thibs' trust at first. Hinrich should be healthier in much lower-usage role and will strengthen both guard spots on the bench. Snell and Dunleavy are both very legitimate options to offer Butler and Deng relief, so neither of Deng/Butler need to have freakish minutes. Taj is Taj, it would be great to see him get back to his pre-contract play this year with a healthier knee. I don't know how much you'll see Teague; I'm guessing you'll see more Snell than Teague. It'll be fine, as it always is. I shall never forget the mass panic about the dismantling of our bench last offseason, so I'm not biting on the panic button now. The players have never been good, that's why they are bench guys. Our coach knows how to coach them and how to use them in a way that hides their weaknesses and I don't expect much to change.

Dunn?
There are so many people that spend their whole youth being told that striking out and pulling the ball is bad that I think it is impossible for some fans to ever like Adam Dunn.
-
Dunn?
In this thread, the human mind has a better memory and capacity to analyze than statistics. "Adam Dunn sucks in the clutch because I remember him striking out at a time I wanted him to hit, damn it!"

Keppinger to Yanks?
QUOTE (balfanman @ Jul 2, 2013 -> 01:07 PM) I thought our defense was pretty bad now, but if thats the case, its going to get worse. With how Alexei has been playing (error city), I have to wonder if we are actually worse off defensively in that case even with the drastic loss of talent.

QUOTE (flippedoutpunk @ Jul 2, 2013 -> 11:04 AM) Ouch those are a pain! I accrued those from being in the army and doing idiotic 12 mile runs every friday on treacherous terrain. I first got them in 2006 and to this day I havent completely got rid of them. Ive accepted the fact that if I want to run, its just going to hurt no matter what. I'm hoping I caught them early enough in my training that they have been able to heal up as I recover from the shoulder surgery, but I suppose I won't know for sure until I get back to running.

The continuing fall and decline of PHT.
This place is always rocking when the rumors start, that's for sure. I remember being in a car trying to refresh soxtalk from my cell phone with terrible signal in the rocky mountains last year on deadline, knowing that I could get the fastest and best info here on that front.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (Buehrle>Wood @ Jul 2, 2013 -> 10:56 AM) I think Korver is getting the same price. Would rather have him than Dunleavy. Korver is a better shooter, but I f***ing hated that guy by the time he left. He folds like a cheap suit the instant the pressure is on. I don't just mean missing shots, which can happen by bad luck, but I'm talking about how he couldn't be an effective basketball player in crunch time. Gives up the ball, can't pass, and can't play defense. How many times did we see the Heat rip the ball right out of his hands at clutch time? I'm happy to go in a different direction and let Dunleavy be a bit more well-rounded, even if he sacrifice a bit of shooting (which is debatable, I suppose)

2013-2014 NHL thread
I've gotten the feeling that Stalberg really doesn't want to be back, even with fair compensation. I don't think he enjoyed the Q doghouse very much.

Keppinger to Yanks?
If we trade Alexei, I have a feeling we'll see Gordon at SS and Kep at 2B. Morel would probably be in the mix as a platoon partner at 3B for Gillaspie in that case.

Is it just me or is that not a good return?

White Sox sign Micker Zapata for $1.6 million
Worth playing devil's advocate: this pretty much hamstrings our ability to bring in much more in international FA, so our entire year of international scouting is pretty much wrapped up in this one player. There is some risk in that.

2013 in-game experience?
I was there from 3:30 PM to 1:30 AM and I had a great time. Thinking back, I never saw the vendors in the beginning of the DH but I didn't care about that at all - I don't like buying from my seat, I'd rather go check out the selection on the concourse. I enjoyed blowing my money on some Oberon and Bar Fly IPA at the Midwest Brews stand at 141. For a set of games that couldn't be more disappointing in terms of the on-field results, it was a fabulous gameday experience. Those guys at WSI sound like entitled pricks. IMO, the main drawback of the Cell is that you don't get LD access when you buy UD tickets. I know it really disappoints a lot of people that come for the first time with UD tix. You're basically a second class citizen. If you come more often, you probably won't care if you can't get down there because you've seen it all before. Other than that, the food is great as is the atmosphere. I'm sure it would be even better (even though in some ways less fun) if more people showed up.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Jul 2, 2013 -> 09:56 AM) Ugh, sports radio is insufferable this morning. You would think Derrick Rose just decided to sign with another team the way they're covering this non-story. Yesterday B and B were lamenting the loss of Nate (even though they assume everyone on the team hated him and they seem to think fans weren't fond either). "So Dunleavy replaces Belinelli, but who replaces Nate?" Maybe...Derrick Rose??? They are citing Nate's breakout games where his scoring pretty much won us a game as a reason to say our team will be worse off. No thanks, we won't need some crazy guy on the bench to rescue us offensively when Derrick leaves the game with a lead.

My shoulder surgery and stress fractures in my shins have completely derailed my progress. Can't wait to keep getting healthy and back to training for my marathon and thus be on the track to looking a little better.

Keppinger to Yanks?
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Jul 1, 2013 -> 09:31 PM) Keppinger does have value, limited as it may be. Having a guy that is capable of playing 3B and 2B (and in desperate situations, SS) with the ability to hit left handed pitching at the level he does is extremely valuable, but it is limited value. Yeah, I'm not going to move him for scraps, but if an offer with a legit prospect or two comes rolling in, I don't think twice about making the deal. Right. I want to get something that is at least equal to his on field value to us in a trade -- in other words, the financial savings shouldn't be a factor on our end when evaluating whether the trade is a good one.

2013 Minor League Transactions
What Zapata and his family did to make him an international FA is brilliant. There is SOME chance that he squandered a chance to become a first round draft pick and earn more than 1.6 million, by moving he ensured he could get that when he's 16 instead of 18 and not risk injury/prospect status dropping/etc. Still, there was probably much to be uncertain of when they made the move. Someone gave them very good advice.

The continuing fall and decline of PHT.
When I'm feeling down about the Sox, I usually avoid PHT as much as I can even though I frequent other threads since I have begun to trust certain posters on certain things so I am more comfortable going to ST for many non-baseball things. I don't love just hating on everyone and everything so I try to avoid going into threads where I will feel the need to talk everyone off the ledge. The rest of the forum is great, for the most part. Anyway, I think the ultimate health of the forum depends on more enthusiastic posters. The "golden age" (Was it golden?) was powered by a lot of super enthusiastic posters with time to post. This is true of every forum. Likewise, individual posters' usage levels will change on any forum over time. You hope that for every frequent poster that becomes less frequent, a less frequent poster becomes more frequent. I have no idea if that's the case here right now. I don't mind the level of traffic. There is a ton of discussion (IMO) but I can keep up with it. I frequent some forums where there is too much activity to keep up with or so little that there is little motivation to keep checking throughout the day. ST fits nicely in the middle for me if I check in once or more per day. A couple days away and I won't be able to catch up on conversation, which is fine.

QUOTE (kev211 @ Jul 2, 2013 -> 12:03 AM) After seeing what head coach and GM disputes can do to teams I'm worried. 6 titles? Me likey. Did Oz/KW hate each other from the start? Make it 7.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
I would say the Cubs are the worst run organization. Then the Bears, though this could change dramatically in the next year as we get a better understanding of what the differences are between Angelo and Emery as well as Lovie and Trestman. Then the White Sox, who could quite easily drop below the Bears or maybe rise up if they turn things around quickly. At this point, their current problems seem to be rooted in the KW-Ozzie squabbles, which is a very silly root cause to your problems. Bulls Blackhawks

Keppinger to Yanks?
Keppinger is not value-less and is signed to a fair contract. Also, since he isn't great, his fair contract isn't very big. I wouldn't trade him for s***s and giggles, I'd try to get something potentially nice back for him. I'll continue to say this, but we are going to be saving lots of money in the coming year with expiring contracts and some of the other trades that are likely. You don't need to dump a guy for $4M a year because you think he is overpriced. He is NOT Mark Teahen.

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Jul 1, 2013 -> 06:44 PM) Eh, he did that once, and Rodman was persona non grata in the nba at that point. Was writing a post that said the same thing. Scottie was the one key acquisition in his tenure that is more or less unequivocally a great move and that wasn't a big named player, he was a draftee.

NBA Thread 2013-2014
This could end up messy. On the other hand, we got six championships the last time our coach and GM hated each other.
