The question so obvious that noone thought to ask
AddisonStSox replied to jackie hayes's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
Undoubtedly: the Bears are in a great position to really upgrade that offense. Drafting Braylon Edwards or Mike Williams instantly adds credibilty to the offense and the offensive passing game would you all agree? Either of those guys offer deep threats, great size, and game-breaking ability. The thought of giving Rex two outstanding recievers to throw to is really a breath of fresh air. Drafting a WR also give you the flexibility to add a backup RB in the later rounds. Anyone that doesn't think this a deep RB draft is downright goofy. With guys like Fason, Moats, Gore, Arrington, Barber III, Kay-Jay Harris, and Eric Shelton, you can comfortably add your backup RB without burning that 2'nd round selection. Drafting one of the top-three RB is also a very good thing. Would we agree that Carnell, Brown, and Benson all have star quality? All three of those guys could be high-profile RBs and it could happen in less that three years--that is outstanding. You would also give Rex two capable RBs lining up behind him that can pound it out down-after-down. Never underestimate the importance of a bruising running attack--it opens up the passing game, it protects the QB, and it's a safe way to pick up yardage. The WR pool is not nearly as deep as the RB pool, but guys like Roddy White, Jermone Mathis, Chris Henry, Reggie Brown, even Mark Clayton will all be hanging around in the 2'nd round. Also, Benson is an upper-tier RB and will establish himself as one of the best in the game in two years' time. He's a skilled runner, tough, durable, always hits the hole,--a workhorse. He may very well be the next ubber-RB in the city of Chicago. -

QUOTE(WHarris1 @ Apr 21, 2005 -> 07:17 PM) Or we realize that Thomas Jones will outproduce Benson this year if Grossman has 2 WR's to keep defenses honest. So which of his 6'0 215 frame, Doak Walker Award, ABC Sports All-America Player of the Year Award, 4 years of over 1,000 rushing, 64 rushing TDs (Third all time), or 621 reception yards that have you staying as far away as possible? -

QUOTE(T R U @ Apr 21, 2005 -> 07:10 PM) ROFL They had Ronnie Brown going #13 That was a HORRIBLE HORRIBLE mock draft Miami will NOT take Aaron Rodgers, its Smith or Edwards, 100% guarantee if they dont trade out... If not, Miami is the biggest smoke screen franchise in the NFL What are you talking about? When I was watching, they had Brown go to the Fins. -

Kiper on top draft picks/Bears

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Apr 21, 2005 -> 05:23 PM) Am I the only one who likes Williams more than Edwards? A few weeks ago you weren't. I've really come around on Braylon Edwards. After having read up on him and looked over his numbers, it is becoming more and more obvious he is the guy the Bears SHOULD go after. He put up sick numbers in both his sophomore and junior years, but made the wise decision to come back for his senior year. His speed and size are second to none at his position. He can out-run corners, he can knock them over, he can out-jump them...he can basically do it all with his size. He uses every bit of that 6'3 208 frame on the field. As you probably know, the one knock that continues to haunt him is his inability to consistantly catch the "easy" ball. While that is something to consider, the pros greatly out-weigh the cons. Another lesser knock is his inability to sell his routes. That said, I think those are two things that can be worked on at the professional level and he shouldn't have a difficult time catching-on with a good WR coach. Another tell-tale sign of his skill is evident in all these teams scrambling to get a shot at him at the top of the draft. Personally, if I was San Francisco, I'd take a LONG hard look at him; he's that good. With Muhammad on the opposite side of the field, Grossman would have two EXCELLENT options to throw to (especially if the Bears think Grossman is the QB of the future; this would help bring out that potential). While Brown, Benson, Carnell Williams, and Mike Williams are all sure-fire picks, Braylon would be the best fit. At the end of the day, it comes down to me believing Edwards would benefit the Bears immediately as well as down the road. With the RB, you risk screwing up a good thing with Thomas Jones. The rookie would be sharing time with Jones and no one is sure how that would go out. That said, most importantly this is the deepest RB draft I've seen in a LONG, LONG time. The Bears could get a primo back in the 2, 4 and 5 round >. As for Williams: I think he may take a little longer adapting to the professional game, but when he gets there it will be his speed that separates him from Edwards. Edwards is just the real freaking deal. You know what you're getting. Flat out. And anytime you know what you're getting on draft day, that is usually the way to go. -
