If he is anything like Chan-Ho before his injuries, you sign him and you sign him quickly. Even if he doesn't pan out, a minor leauge contract isn't going to bury you. Best case scenario: he impresses in the minors and can contribute at the major league level. Worst case scenario: some very nice PR, but ultimately, you lose the gamble and have to eat a minor league contract. Roll the dice.

QUOTE(BridgeportHeather @ Mar 1, 2005 -> 07:36 PM) It's about time for society to get rid of affirmative action, because these african americans of today never experienced theh oppression their parents and grandparents faced. Lady, you're preaching to the choir. Believe me, I'm here, and it ain't pretty. If there was any doubt in my mind on the subject prior to coming here, it has all been washed away. I echo that sentiment 110%. However, it's important to note afirmative action doesn't just exist at this institution.

QUOTE(LowerCaseRepublican @ Mar 1, 2005 -> 09:06 AM) I don't know about most of you but I hadn't heard of BTK until he got the media push the last month or so. You kinda have to wonder, egomaniac that the guy is trying to get attention, that he seems to feel sort of cheated. I mean if he did this in LA or NYC, he'd be all over the news and be a huge name a la the Nightstalker, Ted Bundy and the rest of the sociopaths. You didn't hear of him for a reason. The media/law enforcement has learned the err of their ways and don't give these psychos the air time they are looking for. Don't think for one second he didn't want to be known in every house across the nation.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Mar 1, 2005 -> 04:08 PM) I also get the impression that Ozzie did not want him either... I don't know. ...again, it was a question of work ethic. I don't know if it was ever publicly stated, but it was passed around. Kenny and Ozzie seem to be on the same page when it comes to clubhouse presence. They want good apples.

I've always liked Jurassic in a Sox uniform. It seems like his confidence is in the right place, lets hope the lbs. are.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Mar 1, 2005 -> 03:51 PM) It's been said in other articles that the players that had to go were traded or let go. The implication was that they did not fit with the team philosophy and did not belong. Sort of an "if you're not with us, you're against us" idea. It's fairly obvious how that applies to maggs, but not as obvious with Lee. Was it just his not retaliating for the Burke incident? Is there more to it? There was a question of work ethic with Carlos, at least from Kenny's point of view. It's been known that Carlos or Konerko had to go in order to free up the payroll to sign some guys this off-season. Konerko was a Kenny guy; Carlos was not.

Could Derrick Mason be a Bear???
AddisonStSox replied to WilliamTell's topic in Alex’s Olde Tyme Sports Pub
He should be a Raven by week one. I highly doubt the Bears are interested in another top-notch WR via free agency. They have other issues to address first via free agency, namely backup QB and OL, and may pick a veteran wide out off the scrap heap. -
Be honest Show, was this inspired by my post in the Pierzynski thread in PHF? Good work as always.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Feb 28, 2005 -> 08:20 PM) I pretty much guarantee the Bears won't draft a WR at #4. Financially it would be stupid to give Musin so much money and then give a big time signing bonus to Braylon. My money is on the Bears signing a veteran WR like Travis Taylor at a price tag similar to what DT made this past year. I think JA likes Gage, Wade and Berrian as the 3, 4 and 5 recievers with them being able to learn from veterans. In the draft I think the Bears go RB, LB or possibly Alex Smith assuming they stay at 4. I also wouldn't mind Antrelle Rolle, simply because I think he's a stud. But mark my words, they WILL NOT draft a WR at #4. Also John Clayton seems to think Warner is destined to join the Bears. It appears that following the signing the Bears still have roughly 7 million in cap room this year. That's pretty much right on the money. It won't be a WR at #4 anymore for a few of the reasons you mentioned. -Musin is hands down one of the best WR in the NFC. Before last season, he was more of a possession reciever; but, he has shown he is capable of being the deep threat, possession, and TD reciever. Edwards and Williams, although a nice compliment to Musin on the other side, are no longer necissites with the #4 selection. -Sadly, Angelo does like Gage, Wade, and Berrian. As long as he realizes Gage is nothing more than a 3rd or 4th reciever, he's going to be ok. Wade, not so much. Berrian should be used for nothing more than special teams and fly routes. -Alex Smith will not be coming to the Bears. Angelo has far too much pride for that move. Grossman is his guy. He isn't going to bring in another young arm until he sees a healthy Grossman. -I, too, would love Rolle at #4, although if Ronnie Brown or Cedric Brown are there at #4, I think they're coming to Chicago. Everyone, say NO to Kurt Warner. A resounding NO.

We are going to love Pierzynski on the SouthSide. The perfect start to the Twins series, to set the tempo for the year, would be El Duque going up and in on Torri with the first pitch and Pierzynski getting up and tossing it back to Hernandez. There's been a changing of the guard. No nonsense this time around.

QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Feb 28, 2005 -> 04:48 PM) And saying that the Bears have "one of the most complex playbooks in the NFL" is laughable. Where did you get that crap from? Angelo? I'll bet he's never looked at Mike Martz's, Dick Vermeil's, Tom Moore's, or Andy Reid's playbooks. Surely you're joking. Please, please tell me you're kidding. Certainly you're familiar with former Bears offensive coordinator Terry Shea; the same Terry Shea that coached at Rutgers from 1996-2000. Oh, you're not. Well, let me inform you then. Terry Shea had the single, largest, and most complex playbook in the NFL last year. "highly complex offense ... will be difficult for Rex." -Shea But, um, you knew that. You knew what kind of offense he ran for 5 seasons at Rutgers. You knew that his system requires an entire off-season of preparation for complete comprehension and execution. Why don't you make like David Terrell and run the out pattern. Go ride the pine, spike. -

Badger, Keith, wite...logical arguements are clearly not working with this guy. 1) It's laughable to call Grossman "injury prone" for the reasons Badger so clearly listed. Look at his injury history dating back to high school, he is not "injury prone." That's absurd. 2) To think this year's RB class is not deep is insane. You obviously are not familiar with this class as there is talent from top to bottom. Ryan Moats, McLendon, Gore, Arrington, Barber III, Harris...I could go on, but why bother. 3) Adrian Peterson is better than anything you could get after the third round? HA-HA ROTFLMFAO 4) Hutchinson isn't "NFL material." Well, how can I aruge with that. If TheBigHurt35 on a White Sox message board says he can't cut it in the NFL, than he can't cut it. :headshake The Bears organization has said time and time again that they were very impressed with Hutchinson, given the limited time he was offered to learn one of the most complex playbooks in the NFL. But, you already knew that. Sorry, I think I'm going to have to go with the Bears organization on this one and say the guy can play football. Goof. 5) Have you ever played the QB position? I played the position for 10+ years and there are certain things you pick up on. 1) George still knows the game. 2) To think Kurt Warner is a viable option proves you have no handle on the situation 3) Hutchinson is huge, athletic, and accurate. Look over the RB class, look at Adrian Peterson's talent, look over Grossman being "injury prone." -
Well, Well, Well, so long Terrel. I'm sure you'll be missed. :puke :puke This guy was not only a s***ty player on the field, he was a s***ty presence in the lockeroom and as a representative for the Chicago Bears. So, this begs the question: Williams, Edwards, Williamson, Clayton, who's it gonna be? Does Angelo take the talent at the RB position with the #4 selection, or does he stick to his guns and find a compliment to his new WR stud addition in Mushin? Well, this is the last time I'll get to shout what I've shouted at the television on so many Sunday afternoons: "Terrell you bum!"

QUOTE(knightni @ Feb 28, 2005 -> 11:42 AM) What do you mean "Grossman can't stay healthy"? Does he have an injury history, other than last year's leg injury, that I don't know about? He has no history of injury. In fact, last year's knee injury was an extreme rarity in Grossman's career. He's always been healthy. I don't know what he's referring to. -

QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Feb 28, 2005 -> 11:38 AM) Well, then they're going to need to sign a veteran QB (Warner, perhaps?). Grossman can't stay healthy and the Bears can't afford to be without a respectable backup again. What they DON'T need is another RB, as Jones played very well during the early part of last season, when they had something resembling a balanced offense. Chad Hutchinson is this team's #2 QB. The Bears organization is very, very high on him and they think with one full pre-season under his belt, and a new and less complicated offensive playbook with Ron Turner and he'll be ready to rock. I loved what I saw last year from Hutchinson and there is no doubt in my mind he can succeed in the NFL. It's just that he was always on his ass after getting knocked around because of our shotty o-line. Jeff George looked very crisp in practice last season and it would not suprise me to see him asked back to camp. This team does NOT need Kurt Warner by any strech of the imagination. They bear DO need another RB. Are you satisified with Adrian Peterson if Thomas Jones goes down? I'm not. Brock Forsey is gone, Train is gone and you're left with Peterson and some other scrub on the depth chart. I'm sorry, but a RB will most certainly be drafted this year. Hopefully, they wait until the later rounds and grab one of the talented backs farther down the rankings. This is a very, very stacked RB class and names like Moats, Morrency, Gore, Harris, and McLendon will all be around in the later rounds. -

QUOTE(TheBigHurt35 @ Feb 28, 2005 -> 10:19 AM) That won't happen. Why would you want to draft a RB when you already have Jones and A-Train? Jones was pretty damn good earlier in the season when Grossman and Tait were healthy. The Bears are fine at RB. What they need is a veteran QB. What's Jeff Garcia up to these days? Train is gone. Garcia will join back up with Mooch in Detroit. -
QUOTE(southsideirish @ Feb 27, 2005 -> 09:17 PM) Why would you take Rolle or Johnson when you have corners like Peanut, Vasher, Azumah, McQuarters. I really dont think that is a necessity or the weak point of the team. Frank Gore sucks by the way. Not only is he one of the slowest backs in the draft, but he can't ever stay healthy. He was much better before all those knee surgeries. He will be lucky to get drafted. Wow. Ok, I'll try to stay nice. "Why would you take Rolle or Johnson when you have corners liek Peanut, Vasher, Azumah, McQuarters?" I think you answered your own question. McQuarters shouldn't be back in a Bears uniform next year, Peanut looks to be an above-average cornerback in the NFL but is still quite raw and needs work, Vasher had a stellar rookie campaign but he is 5'11, 180 and can't cover the big, aggressive WR, and Azumah is TERRIBLE in coverage. You can't possible be serious about Azumah. Do you like him because he wears a dark visor and returns kicks? Azumah is a glorifed special teams player and should be a nickle corner on most good secondaries. Rolle is lockdown, something the Bears don't have (sorry). He shut down the much bigger and stronger Larry Fitzgerald last season and has been talked about since high school. Rolle is big, extremely strong, very fast and extremely athletic. The only knock on this kid is his inability to finish off a tackle and break on an INT. As for Johnson, what can be said of this kid that hasn't already been stated? I've made posts on him all over this forum, I'm too lazy to re-type it, you can dig it out at your lesiure. Gore is extremely talented. You don't top #1 on the Miami depth charts over both Portis and McGahee if you "suck." Lucky to get drafted? Lucky to get drafted? Dude, stick with baseball. He is this year's diamond in the rough. If he didn't have two blown out years in two consecutive seasons, he would have been a first round selection, hands down. So, no sir, he most certainly does not "suck."

There are far too many new additions this season for the national people to gage any type of success for the White Sox. I can't blame them. I'm developing some serious pre-season jitters over our roster.
-
I don't know what Angelo is going to do, but I know what he should do. Angelo needs to take a serious look at both Johnson and Rolle at the #4 slot. As has been stated on this board many times, Johnson is a rare talent. His athletic ability at his position is unmatched in this year's and last year's draft. Rolle is also a standout, lockdown corner. I have no doubt in my mind that Rolle will excel in this league and join the elite status in two year's time. Now with the addition of Mushin, Angelo has a little bit more play with that #4 selection. If he wants to draft Mike Williams or Braylon Edwards, he'll have one of the better WR cores in the NFC. If he is dead-set on offense and sees Benson or Brown (which I highly doubt) he'll also have to give them a look. If I were Angelo, I'd take Rolle or Johnson with the #4 pick, and draft Frank Gore or another RB in the later rounds. Looking at the RB class, there is talent from top to bottom. A few more names to watch: Ryan Moats (LT), Kay-Jay Harris (WVU) and Morrency (Okl. St). That said: if Brown is there at #4...uh-oh.

QUOTE(black jack @ Feb 27, 2005 -> 03:20 PM) i'm not a fan of derrick johnson. i've been living in tx for the past two years and have watched every game. he never seems to make the big play and all of his tackles come 5-7 yards downfield. it's his speed that covers up all of his warts. he just lacks the instincts of a great linebacker. i smell a disapointment if he's drafted this high. We are talking about the same kid here right? Derrick is an unreal defensive talent. He's extremely well-rounded and the only true knock on him is strength and the inability to shed blockers. As a freshman, Derrick totaled 83 tackles (13 for a loss of yards), since then he has been nothing short os spectacular. Derrick was credited for 8 forced fumbles in the team's first 10 games, he has above-average size, way above-average speed, and a nose for the football. His athletic ability is unmatched at his position this year and last coming out of the college game. He is also good in coverage. I don't know what Johnson you've been watching in Texas. Doesn't make big plays!??? :headshake
