Miscellaneous "White Sox" Trade Notes
hitlesswonder replied to Kalapse's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 11:05 PM) I don't like the fact there's no mention of the Yankees paying some of Damon's salary, as well as the fact we'd play him in CF. http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...-home-headlines If the Sox want the Yankees to add money, the Sox will have to kick-in more players. Damon can still hit a little, while Crede may not be able to play major league ball anymore. I'm surprised anyone is interested in trading for him given the injury. I agree that Damon in CF is a bad idea. With Damon, Emil Brown, Josh Fields, Dye, Richar, Konerko, and AJ the Sox would easily be the worst defensive team in baseball next season. Ugh. -
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 07:33 PM) Try 3. Or more. Seriously -- Garland for Cabrera? Garland alone isn't enough to get you Bill Hall. He's 1 year of a league average pitcher for $12M with a shoulder knot and type B free agent status. Miguel Cabrera is a top 5 hitter in bigs under control for 2 years and will be a type A. He performs at a HOF level at the plate. And the Marlins don't want salary. They'd want Fields, Gio, and FDL just to start. Maybe another player as well.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 11:03 AM) And none of those guys would I hesitate in trading for someone like Crawford. I agree. FDL is only substantial prospect on that list and the odds are stacked against him ever making the majors, let alone being a quality starter. In fact if the Rays wanted Egbert, Gio, and Danks for Crawford I would do that trade.

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Nov 5, 2007 -> 10:07 AM) But then again, that would just be changing the subject to avoid what Scott Skiles has been talking about for a while now. Thomas needs to bring his game every night. If he would wake up to the fact that he just can't "out athlete" NBA guys every night, he has the potential to be a Shawn Marion type player. To say Thomas has to work on his game -- sure that's reasonable. To say he's a joke is ridiculous. Watch a Bulls game and tell me who on the team has NBA-level athleticism -- Thomas is the only one I've seen. Given that he's 21, I'd wait another season at least before deciding he can't raise his focus to an NBA level. You should look at players like Jermaine O'Neal and Al Harrington who both underwhelmed for several years after entering the league young. They ended up being legit NBA players. You would have done better with a thread in asking if the Bulls have a single guard quick enough to play perimeter defense.

QUOTE(Buehrle>Wood @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 08:36 PM) Oh god. What does that mean? Maybe Sampson is sleazy, but it's hard to deny he can coach college basketball. Maybe "great" was the wrong word -- I wouldn't want him coaching a team I liked but he clearly is good at winning games. And maybe I'm overrating IU's talent, but Gordon, Crawford, White, and Ellis are all talented enough to play in the League IMO. Gordon has a legit shot at winning a national title this year at IU. Given that he would not have had that at Illinois, I don't think it's a stretch to say he made a good choice for his career. -
QUOTE(bigruss22 @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 05:35 PM) Wow these guys are idiots. One wanted Fields and Garland JUST for Damon Another Wanted DLS for Damon. Another wanted Crede and Gio. They apparently know nothing... It's not out of the question that the Sox would have to add a prospect to get the Yanks to throw money in the deal. Crede has no real trade value. He wasn't good on offense prior to Sept. 2005 and now he's hurt. It wouldn't shock me to see someone like Sweeney, Egbert, or Chris Carter added to the deal.

QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 4, 2007 -> 11:32 AM) I know it's early and the games don't matter, but Indiana is far and away the best team I've seen during these exhibition games on the Big 10 Network. I agree -- I think they'll easily win the Big Ten and they're my pick to win the NCAA tournament as well. They have at least 4 legit NBA players on the roster and an excellent coach. Eric Gordon chose well. -
How can anyone think the Sox would get Melky Cabrera for Crede? Or even Betemit? If the Sox trade Crede, they'll get a scrub A-ball pitcher. Joe has no trade value right now. The Yanlees aren't desperate, they are hunting for bargains. They can afford to take $5M flyer on Crede and see if his back is OK. If not, they use Betemit.

QUOTE(Rex Hudler @ Oct 31, 2007 -> 10:50 PM) I stopped reading right there. I would have an intelligent debate about this but obviously you are incapable of doing so. I find it funny that I need to past my love of IU yet you bring such objective terms as Samscum and frivolous "dirty for years" accusations. I agree with Rex -- this is a tempest in a teapot. The assistant coach (who has been dismissed) committed the infractions, not Sampson. And seriously, what's the big deal about a few phone calls? Is that worse than keeping a felon on a team in order to land recruit who happens to be a friend of his? I don't think so -- but it's certainly true one is against the NCAA rules and the other isn't. I think everyone expecting the NCAA to do something big here will be very disappointed. At most it will be further phone restrictions. -
QUOTE(Gregory Pratt @ Oct 20, 2007 -> 09:33 AM) Well, I've never heard Babe Ruth described as "Clutch" have you? Not only unclutch...he's another of those heavy power-hitters that clog the bases. Didn't we learn anything from 2005? You need speed to win and put pressure on the other team. I'll take Pods over Ruth in LF hands-down.

Random Garland Trade Idea.
hitlesswonder replied to Jack Parkman's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(beck72 @ Oct 20, 2007 -> 06:12 AM) That's a good point. The sox should get far more than Hall in a Garland trade. The Brew Crew might bite on some sox arms that are out of options/ may not help in 2008 like Masset, Sisco, Aardsma. I guess I just disagree with everyone posting here, but I doubt the Brewers are going give Hall away for crap 1) Hall has 3 years and $20M left on his contract. That's not a killer deal at all -- that size of contract is easy to move. 2) Hall has a .787 career OPS and can play CF and SS. 3) Hall is going to be 28 next season. He had a bad season, but he's only a year removed from a .900 OPS season and was hurt last year. Why would the Brewers trade him for one or two middle relievers that have never shown the ability to get major league hitters out? And why do people think Garland is going to bring back any more than Garcia did last season? He won't -- he's owed $12M, he's a league average pitcher that eats innings, he's complained about shoulder pain, and he's a 1-year rental. The Sox aren't trading Santana here. They'll be lucky to get anything more than a B prospect or two for Garland. Hall is better than a B prospect or two and he fills a position of need on the Sox. Even in a down year his offense blew Uribe's away. Garland for Hall would be fine with me. I imagine the Brewers would be unlikely to do that deal though. -
QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Oct 20, 2007 -> 07:56 AM) I really think when and if Hahn gets another job, its really going to hurt the White Sox more than you would think an assitant GM leaving would hurt. I would rank Hahn the second brightest individual in the organization, second to JR. I agree. I'd rather the Cardinal's hire KW and the Sox make Hahn their GM.

Random Garland Trade Idea.
hitlesswonder replied to Jack Parkman's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(greg775 @ Oct 18, 2007 -> 09:25 PM) I hate articles like this. Hall hit .254, 14, 63. Those are Owens-like numbers. Garland for Hall? That would be robbery by the Brewers. KW can't afford to make another hokey trade. It has to be one we clearly win. I still say we are not as "deep" in starting pitching as the writer suggests. You let me know when Owens has Hall's power, even in a down year for Hall. Plus Owens doesn't play SS and wasn't very good prior 2007 like Hall. Garland is no prize -- $12M for 1 or 2 draft picks plus 200 league average innings if the shoulder knot doesn't reappear. Hall for Garland would be fine by me. -
Official Recruiting Thread II

QUOTE(thedoctor @ Oct 15, 2007 -> 03:47 PM) simeon's stan simpson chooses illinois good to add another cpl kid to the program. For those keeping score, Weber has now had 3 former CPL players commit to Illinois, which I believe is more than the last 2 UI coaches combined. -
QUOTE(YASNY @ Oct 10, 2007 -> 10:37 PM) I hear the Cardinals are targeting Garland. Any thoughts on what we could get in return from them? They have a good catching prospect in Bryan Anderson. Other than that, their minor system isn't so hot, but Anderson plus one other decent prospect would be about the same thing that Garcia brought last season. I just don't know who else that prospect might be. Actually, Anderson & Reyes would be a lot like the Garcia trade: B prospect plus failed former top prospect/project. But I don't see Reyes as the kind of pitcher KW would target. Where'd you hear this?

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Oct 10, 2007 -> 09:31 AM) You have had a hard on for trading Bobby all year long. Did he kick your dog or something. This is the first time in a long time we have a good closer and the first thing you want to do is spin him for prospects. He is young, and he is cheap. And dont give me the well we could get a Borowski type guy, because those types won't play well at the Cell. Ask the rest of our pen how getting the ball up works in our park in the summer. To me you build your pen backwards from Bobby. You have a Loogy in Boone, Waserman looks like he will stick. This is your starting point. Fill the rest from there. Sheesh. People were guessing what the Sox most valuable trade commodity was and I guessed Jenks, That's all that was. I didn't suggest trading him in that post. In previous posts (all year long?), when I did say it might be a good idea, I did so because it looks like the Sox might blow for several years here and Bobby won't be much use to a 72-win team. Plus the Sox have so many holes, if they could trade one good player for multiple good players the Sox would have to consider that. I have nothing against Jenks at all.
-
QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 11:37 PM) At this point, there is only one player you might get 3 top prospects for in the White Sox organization, and that's Mark Buehrle, and even then some teams will question whether he is consistent enough to be the #1 of their staff. Also, Vazquez has the stuff, but he's on the wrong side of 30 and hasn't been nearly consistent enough the past 4 years or so, so you'd probably be able to get 1 or maybe 2 for him, but not much more. Actually, I think Jenks might be the Sox most valuable trading chip. He's cheap and has 3 years before FA. And had an excellent season. He probably couldn't fetch 3 top prospects, but 2 top prospects wouldn't be out of the question.

QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 09:26 PM) Bonds makes a ton of sense, and is the most likely option. Hunter and Jones are going to take a DH job, and the Halos aren't just going to kick Matthews to the curb... Well, Anderson could move to DH and that would open an OF spot for Hunter or Jones. I agree Bonds seems like the most likely option.
-
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 09:20 PM) 2 quick Arod factoids I heard from Olney today. Boras is looking for an 11 year deal for his 32 year old client and according to Buster the Yankees are prepared to offer Alex a contract that averages $31M a year. Now tell me, how and why would the Sox compete with that? Even if they could, the Sox can't lock up that much payroll in one player. Particularly without any cheap young talent on the way. It would cripple the team. The Sox don't have resources LAA, BOS, and NYY do.
-
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 09:09 PM) Depends how desperate Arte Moreno is right now. If they can't get A-Rod, my guess is he forces Stoneman to make a big deal. Remember they were after a big bat last off-season and they ended up with Garry Matthews Jr. Bonds, Hunter, and Jones would be other power options they could buy without parting with any talent.

QUOTE(29andPoplar @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 06:21 PM) I've asked a number of people a number of times if they read the White Sox message boards. The answer I've consistently heard is no. Now it's possible they may be lying and I'm sure someone will add a post correcting me or saying just the opposite, that so and so reads it as does so and so. But thinking they'll read this board, feel shame, and do a better job? Highly doubtful. They don't come here to gather ideas for personnel or development moves, that's for sure. I was absolutely joking when I wrote that they read the board religiously (is there a color for being facetious?). I would be wildly surprised if they read the board. And there's no way that something some yahoo posted on a board (and by yahoo I mean me) would guilt the Sox into anything. That's probably for the best....

QUOTE(CWSGuy406 @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 08:45 PM) Sure you can. If you're Anahiem, you're production at first-base is going to be marginally better for $12 million dollars more, and the arm you're getting back wouldn't even be your second best starter (maybe not even third best, depending on what you think of Weaver). Hell, ask any of the Halo fans over at BTF or a place like Halo's Heaven and I'm pretty sure they'd hate the deal. I agree. This deal would be completely slanted in the Sox favor. Look past the HR totals and factor in park effects and defense -- Kotchman is as good as Konerko right now and $12M cheaper. A year of Garland at $12M certainly isn't more valuable than Shields & Figgins. This would be a great trade for the Sox. So great that there's no way LAA does this. They are a smart conservative organization with money. They can just buy a bat and 4th starter and keep the talent. Why wold they do this trade?

QUOTE(kapkomet @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 04:14 PM) Nice. It took 4 posts for someone to s*** all over this. I love the continued negativity with everything Sox, so why the hell even be a fan if all that can be said is negative spew? Well, maybe if we mock the Sox enough for having a $100M payroll and being marginally better than KC the organization (which I'm sure reads this bnoard religiously) will feel shame and do a better job. Anyway, for some positivity, here: I wish Bell well and hope whatever he'll be doing improves the Sox organization. And Fautino De Los Santos sure looked good in that Futures Game.

QUOTE(RockRaines @ Oct 9, 2007 -> 03:58 PM) But I will remember whenever someone asks me about a prospect, i will always say they wont make it, because the ODDS are with me. I don't know how many times you can get this wrong but I never said Egbert wouldn't make it. I guess the concept that each player in the minors has some chance of being a big league player, and that some have a better chance than others, is just crazy talk huh? Oooh "odds" -- what useless idea that is in trying to assess the relative worth of prospects. And, really -- congratulations on spotting Webb, Lowe, and Wang in the minors and knowing they would make it when BA didn't. You should put out your own newsletter.
