QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 10:41 PM) I disagree with this....a shrewd GM could get one or two top-notch prospects for someone like Buehrle. I disagree, but it's just speculation on my part based on what is in the media. Anyway I did say the "best deal he can make" which clearly implies a deal to the best of KW's ability (as opposed to, say, Dombrowski's or Ryan's ability). So I think I'm covered either way...

QUOTE(Soxfest @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 10:33 PM) More spin by KW and a beat writer I am shocked. Wasn't Laumann in charge of the draft that year? Yes, I believe he was -- so pinning that pick on Shaffer sounds like a truckload of BS.
-
QUOTE(iamshack @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 10:32 PM) I just want the deal to be done. I'm on the golf course today and all I can do is worry about what we are getting back from Boston. I'm pretty much accustomed to being miserable about losing EVERY SINGLE GAME lately, but what happens in the next month could very well define what happens for the next 5 years. That makes me very nervous. You shouldn't worry. The market for Buehrle as an expensive rental isn't great. If KW makes the best trade he can make here, he'll only be able to get 2 B prospects. So it's not like this is a deal that can save the franchise.
-
QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 10:28 PM) Are you saying you condone Kenny trading Mark Buehrle for a couple B prospects!??! That's how read it. I can't believe this guy is advocating trading Buehrle for a couple of B prospects.
-
QUOTE(santo=dorf @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 10:27 PM) He seems like the type of guy the Sox covet. A speedy low OBP player that has trouble playing CF? Yep, that does sound like the kind of guy the Sox covet. Ozzieball here we come!

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 09:19 PM) If it's Crisp and Hansen, then I don't see how KW will still be the Sox's GM after the season ends. JR is a loyal guy. Krause got how many years post-Jordan? The Sox still have Greg Walker on staff. The Sox just hired a "new" amateur scouting director that they canned from that job 4 years ago. Williams will be the Sox GM for years still.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 08:19 PM) He's got some scary-bad numbers. Lowrie/Kottaras/Hansen, here we come! I think the deal will be Crisp and Hansen. And, yes, that would be a bad trade. At least it should be fun reading back over the posts where people demanded 3 top 20 prospects for Buehrle.

If we get a top 5 pick in the 2008 draft.....

QUOTE(southsida86 @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 12:39 PM) Lets say we get the #2 pick so Alvarez is gone. Then what? Who is the college pitcher with the best stuff? I think the Sox take Danks if he's available regardless of where they pick. They won't want to pay slot money for a high draft pick, and I think they'll try to draft below slot. -
QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 02:47 PM) Just asking - but could they get Coco Crisp in return as well? Are they still down on him or no? If the Sox get Crisp back it would be a bad trade. His CF defense isn't good and he's never been a high OBP player.

What a pathetic move. The Sox removed this guy for lousy drafts before and now put him back in place. If that move doesn't sound like the signature of a losing organization I don't know what does.
-
QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 24, 2007 -> 01:12 PM) I don't think we will sign Buehrle....and no way ARod would make the same mistake of signing with a bad team again. No significant free agents will sign with the Sox because the Sox won't pay market value and big name free agents like Ichiro don't want to sign with the worst team in major league baseball. You probably can look forward to Vizquel and/or Rowand.

Dye Not heading to the DL on Sunday

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 11:51 PM) I'm sure we have been offered a few different packages, and I'm sure Kenny is thinking he shot himself in the foot now that JD is on the DL. Just my opinion, but I feel pretty sure that 2 compensatory picks will beat out whatever KW has been offered for Dye this season. -
Jacque Jones to Floridaaaaa

QUOTE(southsida86 @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 11:49 PM) If we could get him for Haeger straight up then I'm sure Kenny would make that trade. It seems that the organization is not high on Haeger, and he has pretty much sucked this year. That would still be a crappy trade IMO. I'd rather keep Haeger in the minors until he hits a hot streak and they could deal him for something more than a $6 million 32 year old platoon player with defensive liabilities and a career OPS under .800. -

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 11:35 PM) Way to pull the trigger before something like this happens KW. Great job! Yeah, I'm sure the Dodgers were all set to trade Billingsley for Dye if KW had just signed off. Dye has had OBP under .300 the whole season and has been creating triples for the opposing team in RF. Everyone in baseball can see it. In the case of Dye, it's better to wait and try to get the compensatory draft picks. Dye's trade value has been on a downward spiral since the start of the season, the last time KW had a good chance to deal Dye for value was the offseason and if that had happened, most Sox fans would have thought he went crazy. -
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 07:27 PM) The Sox are going to lose just as many games even if they have Jaque Jones misplaying balls in RF and swinging over sliders, if the Sox are going to lose they might as well lose while giving their younger players a chance to play. The scary thing is that the Sox probably like that he's under contract for 2008. They know they'll need to acquire a vet OF and Jones for 1 year will be cheaper in time & money than a FA would. Anyway I really hope KW doesn't make trade for the sake of making a trade or to shake things up. A move like acquiring Jones is lateral at best. Patching together a team of mediocrity for 2008 or the remainder of 2007 is worthless to me.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 08:18 PM) It won't be Sweeney that's called up....watch J. Jones be our starting RF on Monday. The only question is what the Sox will give up for him. That will be interesting. -

QUOTE(GreenSox @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 08:54 AM) MacDougal (a reliever for whom we gave up 2 live arms) PLUS Russell (a legitimate prosepct) for Jock effing Jones? That's insane. I wouldn't trade for him -- I was just guessing what the price would be. I like Mac - thought he'd be good. But right now he's performing worse than Jones so I was guessing the Sox needed to add a prospect. I think Russell is a fringe prospect at best. Honestly I'd rather keep Mac. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 09:00 AM) The only way Jones can be valuable to a team now is if he's put in CF. However, at least with the rumors today, we can guarantee he'll kick our ass today if he plays. The Sox don't need a CF -- Erstad is penciled in for the next 3 years on KW's big board. -

QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 07:42 AM) The worst thing is that Jones has another year left on his deal. I have so little faith in KW right now to do the right thing. That year probably is what makes him attractive to KW. The Sox have 3 OF positions to fill next season and they'll bring in a veteran for at least one. Jones contract isn't huge (although it isn't how would want the Sox to use money) and signing a FA would take more years and money. I could easily see this deal getting done. Maybe for MacDougal plus a prospect like Russel? So for 2008, the OF would Jones in RF, Erstad in CF, and Sweeney or Pods in LF. Looking good. -

QUOTE(witesoxfan @ Jun 23, 2007 -> 01:27 AM) When was the last time you had something positive to say about the White Sox front office? Positivity is hard to come by when Sox are closing in on having the worst record in MLB and the minors are bereft of talent. I thought the Toby Hall signing was a good idea. So there's a positive statement. -

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 22, 2007 -> 11:06 PM) Yeah, pretty much. If KW's asking price is going to be those 3 players then my 85% chance of Buehrle not getting traded goes up to 100%. It'll be pretty funny when the Cardinals finish with one of the 15 worst records in baseball, sign Buehrle in the offseason and the Sox get the 35th and 65th picks in the draft as compensation. And funnier still when they decline to offer Mark arbitration because they don't want to pay to sign those picks (or they draft below slot to avoid paying alot). Everyone is so excited to get picks...these would not be high draft picks. They would be 4 years away from even making the big leagues, let alone actually making an impact. And they would be drafted by the Sox insanely brilliant scouting system, so what are the chances they would even make it to the bigs? If the Sox have a chance to pick up a B grade AAA or AA prospect for Buehrle, like a pitcher at the level of Gio Gonzalez, they should make that deal. If they don't, they walk away with essentially nothing. -
QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 22, 2007 -> 02:50 PM) Yeah, this. I hope they keep Singleton around, I like how he doesn't seem to take the game too seriously and brings a bit of very odd humor to the booth unlike Farmer who comes off as an arrogant ass. I've said it before and I'll say it again, a Darrin Jackson/Chris Singleton booth would be the most entertaining announcing team in baseball. Yeah, I think Singleton is best announcer they have. His pacing can still be off, but he's improved quite a bit. Moreover, he's sort of developed an easygoing but sometimes informative style that beats the snot out of any of the other Sox staff. I hope they keep him.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jun 22, 2007 -> 11:09 AM) 8 years, $160M, $16M signing bonus + full no trade clause + large assignment bonus + AS/MVP/SS incentives Seems about right. Yep. He's a future HOF (unless he eats himself out of the league) who will be a FA at a young age. He'll get the sort of deal ARod got when he left Seattle. And it won't be from the Sox.

Miscellaneous "White Sox" Trade Notes
hitlesswonder replied to Kalapse's topic in Sox Baseball Headquarters
QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 21, 2007 -> 12:39 PM) You just get the feeling that a lot of people are going to be really disappointed at the actual players we acquire in a trade compared with the ludicrous proposals we see. Yeah. It's laughable that people want Pelfrey, Gomez , and Milledge for Buehrle when the truth is that that he won't be able to bring back even one of those players. No one will trade an A prospect for a 3 month rent-a-pitcher (one that lacks dominating stuff to boot -- Minaya has said that Milledge would get traded only for a power arm under control through 2008). With the price of FAs so high, cheap talent is more valuable now than in the past. Reading all the trade market assessments, it looks like Buehrle can get the Sox a B-grade minor league prospect, period. He might bring back Reyes from St. Louis, which is probably the best the Sox can do even though Reyes doesn't seem that great. Garland or Jenks would bring back more of a return. But from reading the anonymous scouts assessments you see quoted, it looks like Dye will get an Adkins-like player at best (not Billingsley and/or Broxton). Unless KW deals Garland and/or Jenks the Sox firesale will not bring back significant talent. -

QUOTE(GreenSox @ Jun 21, 2007 -> 08:26 PM) Erstad has an obp of .310, no power, and is injury prone and declining. I hope the Sox are looking for an upgrade in center field. Oh my goodness -- so do I. In fact, since the Sox will suck in 2008 I woudn't mind Anderson getting another chance at all. It would be preferably to Erstad starting on a 100 loss team. I was just saying given how infatuated KW is with Erstad that I'm sure he'll be starting again in 2008.
