  1. QUOTE(3E8 @ Jun 21, 2007 -> 07:18 PM) Man I would love to have Count moved for help this deadline instead of Buehrle, but I cannot see it happening. I agree it's difficult to move Contreras, but not impossible. You can tell him that he'll be moved after 2007 due to salary considerations, at which time he'll have no control over where he goes. Now you can present him with a list of places and he can say what he would find acceptable. Obviously, this alienates the player, but it would be one way to approach it.
  2. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 21, 2007 -> 12:55 PM) Then screw the Mets, and trade Buehrle to the Cardinals for Rasmus, a pitching prospect and Perez. FWIW, the viva el birdos blog has had posts that claim Cardinals management has said Rasmus is untouchable. I think the Cards would be willing to give up a Reyes and maybe a B pitching prospect.
  3. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Jun 21, 2007 -> 11:08 AM) I would really not be a fan of putting WMP in the field, personally. In left, I'd be fine with it provided CF and RF have strong defenders. The Sox next season are looking at an OF of Sweeney, Erstad, and X and since neither Sweeney nor Erstad will provide much power I'd like to see X be a slugger in LF. Pena is still young, I think you can expect some over .800 OPS seasons from him playing regularly.
  4. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 21, 2007 -> 08:57 AM) Gio's a project? If so, I think you underestimate his ability. The "project" was referring to Floyd. Gio was the "prospect".
  5. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 20, 2007 -> 12:59 PM) HA HA HA!!!! You aer comparing yourself to KW? His scouts give him their reports and opinions and KW does the rest. He gathers a bunch of information before making a decision. He is not just looking at stats. The Dbacks have a ton of middle infielders. Richar is blocked. The DBacks were a team that could start - but they like Upton and Drew better. I will ignore it. They are a concrete summation? Bulls***. If others do this based on far less then others probably ignore those opinions as well. No one said you weren't allowed to base an opinion - but how about this - have some more information first. You should know a little bit more before having an opinion on a subject. Do you do this with every other subject? Do you read a couple of lines of a book and determine that it sucks. Do you watch a couple minutes of a movie and decide it sucks? Quickly: 1) No, I'm not comparing myself to KW. He obviously has a huge scouting apparatus and tons of knowledge that I don't. What I was saying is that he has gfallen short of your "don't judge a player till you see him play" rule as well. 2) We'll just have to disagree. I think stats have some meaning in that they record past performance which is a predictor of future performance. They aren't perfect, a career .200 hitter in the minors could become big league star. It just isn't likely. 3) I don't think I bashed the trade as much as I said I hoped the Sox weren't planning on starting Richar in 2008.
  6. QUOTE(daa84 @ Jun 21, 2007 -> 08:20 AM) rockies are stacked...ian stewart, greg reynolds, ubaldo jimenez.....#2 ranked farm system according to BA.. that said we arent getting 3 top prospects....id consider 2 top prospects a victory 1 top prospect would be a victory. As one of the posts above noted, Minaya isn't willing to trade Milledge alone for a rental. I would expect the return for Buehrle to be one B prospect and a project (like Gio and Floyd). In fact, that would be a victory.
  7. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 20, 2007 -> 10:13 PM) Richar! 1-8 with 4 Ks in the White Sox organization. But he has high upside! And stats don't mean anything!
  8. QUOTE(ChiSox_Sonix @ Jun 20, 2007 -> 10:23 AM) There is no reason not to give the kid at least a little bit of a chance before writing him off when prior to this trade you (along with 90% of this board, me too) had probably never even heard of him. I'm not saying that it's impossible for him to make it in the bigs, I'm just saying that I'll be disappointed if he's the Sox starting 2B next season. By the numbers and Sickels rankings, he's not a particulalry good prospect and I would hope the Sox are aiming higher than Richar in their youth movement. If Richar plays great at Charlotte, then fine -- give him shot in the bigs. But if he just posts mediocre numbers then I'd rather see the Sox find someone else to start.
  9. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 19, 2007 -> 04:42 PM) The I don't trust your opinion if you are just reading some stats. I couldn't care any less if you are impressed by them or not. I never said he should start. I said a couple of organizations think he can. Then again, I don't think Iguchi can start at the moment either. Who am I to judge a player that I have never seen play? Who aer you to do the same? To base an opinion off of stats alone is nonsense. http://diamondbacks.scout.com/2/494556.html So, KW shouldn't have signed Iguchi or drafted Poreda since he had never seen either play. All he did was look at stats and get the opinions of his scouts. I guess that was nonsense, too. What organizations think Richar can start? The DBacks don't or they would have kept him. Anyway, there's no reason you should trust my opinion -- feel free to ignore it. As for "who am I" to judge a player solely off stats and reports on the web -- stats don't tell the whole story but they are a concrete summation of what a guy has done in the minors. They have a basis in reality. People routinely post opinions to this board, and all across the web, that are based on far less. If soxtalk is going to start enforcing standards for what amount of evidence allows a person to express an opinion there will be far fewer posts.
  10. QUOTE(southsideirish @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 04:38 PM) Why not? Scouting reports have him as a starting 2B for someone in 2008. What do you know that the reports don't? Have you seen him play? Please tell me more about him. I would love to read your evaluation of this player since you have actually seen him play and not just read some stats. I'm not sure which guy you are referring to, but with Collaspo the wife-beating thing is the reason I wouldn't want to see the Sox deal for him. If Richar is who you are referring to, what reports project him as a starter in the bigs? Let me know -- I'll be happy to read them. No, I haven't seen him play, but looking at "just some stats" his numbers aren't that good. Plus people who post here and have seen him play were not wildly impressed. Sickels didn't even rate Richar a C prospect coming into this season. Maybe he'd be OK in a Cintron-like role, but what do you see that makes you think he should start in the bigs?
  11. QUOTE(daa84 @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 11:11 PM) injury or not, andersons future is certainly in doubt...the guy hasnt consistently hit in 2 years....and to those who will respond, its not ozzies fault Anderson's performance has, I think, proven Ozzie right. It's not like Anderson was hitting before his shoulder injury. And if it's significant, why is he playing? There's not point to that --it reduces his trade value and even if the Sox wanted to keep him risking further injury for AAA ball seems dumb.
  12. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 11:53 PM) You know what sucks....this organization seemingly does everything possible to make smart fans hate everything that Scott Podsednik stands for in the viewpoint of KW, Ozzie, etc. Just wait till they pick up Pods option for next season.
  13. QUOTE(fathom @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 11:31 PM) http://chicagosports.chicagotribune.com/sp...-home-headlines Kenny saying that he might go down with the ship is everyone's worst-case scenario. The ironic thing about saying we're waiting for Pods and Erstad is that chicagosports also states that neither guy is ready to return right now. Sweet Georgia Brown....waiting for Scott Podsednik and Darin Erstad to come back and propel the Sox to a historic finish is maybe the stupidest thing I have ever heard. The Twins made a historic comeback last season on the backs on Liriano, Santana, Morneau, and Mauer. There's at least 2 future HOF in that group. The Sox think Pods and Erstad will do the same thing for them. If Buehrle and Dye walk for nothing (or just for draft picks that the Sox scouting will turn into trash) Williams will have absolutely done an incompetent job and have screwed the Sox franchise into the ground for the foreseeable future. He may already have done that by cultivating the worst farm system in baseball.
  14. QUOTE(Gene Honda Civic @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 01:14 PM) (Though I fully expect Erstad to be back taking up one of those spots) I do too. And that's just terrible. Although if they do have Sweeney and Erstad in the same OF, I want them to keep Pod in LF. That way they could set a record for fewest HRs by an outfield since the deadball era. So we'd have that to look forward to.
  15. QUOTE(iamshack @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 12:39 PM) You'd like to think if Kenny was intent on getting Callaspo he would have just gotten him instead of making the move to get Richar. I'd rather not see the Sox deal for Collaspo. But I'd also like to think that the Sox aren't projecting Richar as their starting 2B in 2008.
  16. QUOTE(IowaSoxFan @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 11:19 AM) Why are they going to start instituting a DH in the NL? They dont have room for all of these guys, and they would like to win too, and thats not going to happen unless they get another bat for the stretch. Broadway will probably be a number 3 starter in the national league and they would also get two more draft picks to stock some more talent. If they want to win they would make the deal, they have a full outfield, and their infield is pretty stacked as well at this point. The only position that are not deep at is 2B, but they have Bonifacio who will probably step up and take that spot once the O-dog is a free agent. They have Gonzales who will be in LF, Quentin RF, Young CF, Tracy 3B, Drew SS, Hudson 2B, and Jackson at 1B next season. If they can resign Dye he could be their everday first basemen. And he lives in Arizona so they may get him to sign at a discount. I'm going to go ahead and agree with Kalapse that Byrnes probably would be just a little reticent to do that trade. Dude, if the DBacks put Upton on the maaket they could get a ton more than Dye. Collaspo for Dye might be possible, but I doubt it. And Broadway has an 86 MPH fatsball. He's not a #3 starter in the International League, let alone the NL. I feel sorry for Kenny Williams at this point. People are expecting him to trade Buehrle and Dye for 10 of Baseball America's top 20 prospects.
  17. QUOTE(Vance Law @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 12:21 AM) Does Cunningham have 20 doubles this year? or 8 home runs? or in AAA? Richar's numbers are heavily aided by his park and league. John Sickels ranked Cunningham as the #6 prospetc in Sox orgnization with a B- ranking. Richar was unranked by Sickels. On the face of it, the Sox traded a better prospect for an older one who they are hoping will contribute to the big league team in 2008. Good luck with that.
  18. QUOTE(BearSox @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 12:28 AM) That would be incredibly stupid because no matter what, we would receive type A compensation for Dye in free agency. But those picks would be 3 years at best from impacting the major league team, and carry a lot more risk of flaming out/injury than a guy already at Aa or AAA. Plus, 2 more picks means 2 more signing bonuses to pay out, and the Sox don't seem to like doing that. The Richar trade makes it look like KW is shopping for "prospects" at AA and AAA that can play in the bigs in 2008. So, I really doubt the Sox keep Dye and hoard picks. That's not their philosophy.
  19. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jun 18, 2007 -> 12:19 AM) Based on the numbers he had for us last season in around 25 games, has there honestly been a bigger disappointment in numbers than Mike MacDougal this season? You could make a good argument and say no to be frank. No pitcher certainly, although Konerko and Dye have been very disappointing as well. Mac pitched well in 2005, too, and in fact has never pitched as badly as he has this season. It was a big blow to the bullpen. But, there's no point in keeping him at AAA. His past numbers suggest he has more potential to turn things around than someone like Prinz. They might as well have Mac pitche in the bigs.
  20. QUOTE(BHAMBARONS @ Jun 17, 2007 -> 11:41 PM) We do need another bat, what would it take for us to get Dye? Pure speculation, but if Dye hits well I think Williams goes close to the deadline before realizing that he can only get a B prospect for Dye and sends him packing for someone like Hairston or Brooks Brown.
  21. QUOTE(Craig Grebeck @ Jun 17, 2007 -> 10:38 PM) Maybe Anderson and McCarthy busted because our manager couldn't f***ing handle letting young players develop. It takes more than one season. Ozzie decided from day one Anderson was s*** so he played him sporadically throughout the year. Real managers stick to the young guys despite their struggles (Pedroia anyone?). Anderson got a lot of at-bats from a contending team last season. I will agree that in the second half Ozzie should have played Anderson more just because the alternative was Mack's abysmal glove in CF. But look at what Anderson is doing in AAA and tell me Ozzie was wrong in his assessment. The Sox minor league system is simply terrible. No one they have called up has even been able to play at replacement level. How can that be? We're talking about the level that "freely available AAA talent" should play at. I don't blame Ozzie for that.
  22. QUOTE(GreenSox @ Jun 17, 2007 -> 06:43 PM) What evidence is there that he's willing to develop a young position player? He was unwilling to let Anderson play stellar D in center and bat 9; Sweeney didn't last a month. Right now, he has Gonzales (not a serious prospect) playing left. So who has Ozzie Guillen been willing to develop and teach? What young hitter has this coaching staff improved? Guillen has been right about every prospect he decided couldn't play. Anderson, McCarthy, and Sweeney have done absolutely nothing to prove Guillen was wrong. I don't think it's the major league coaching staff's fault that Sox prospects don't develop into impact major leaguers.
  23. QUOTE(iamshack @ Jun 13, 2007 -> 02:55 PM) I'm talking about El Duque right now, not two years ago. Randy Johnson looked nowhere near in as good of physical shape as Contreras last year. Contreras looks "youthful" compared to Johnson. He hasn't been as bad as you might suggest. He's had a few poor outings this season surrounded by a bunch of quality starts. There is little doubt in my mind that he can be a solid pitcher in this league for another few years. And that, currently, is worth $10 million annually. Especially given he only has two years remaining on his contract after this season. Johnson may not have "looked" good but his peripheral numbers (K/9 and WHIP) simply blow Contreras away. Contreras has been every bit as bad as he suggested -- look at the K/9 K/BB ands WHIP numbers. By the end of the season that ERA is going to be way over 5. To move Contreras, the Sox will have to eat most of the contract and expect to to get back nothing. That's just the reality of the situation.
  24. QUOTE(Jim Spencer @ Jun 17, 2007 -> 09:08 AM) Josh has hit well in back to back games now Kolb K'd him on 3 pitches -- not a good sign. Fields has hit well against AAA pitchers so far in the bigs.
  25. The Sox are not going to grab the Mets top 2 prospects for Buehrle. They might get Milledge, and if that's on the table they should probably take (even though I'd rather see Mark resigned to a 5 year deal). QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Jun 17, 2007 -> 04:52 AM) Joe Blanton isn't Mark Buehrle. Mark Buehrle could help you get a world series...Joe Blanton won't. Blanton has 3.62 ERA this season. He's very durable and cheap and under control for 4 more years. Buehrle is a better pitcher, but he would be a 3 month rental. Blanton is worth more in trade than Buehrle right now.
