why is it that athletes never realize this until its too late? 20 years after you retire, are you going to sit back and think "thank god i got 14 instead of 10 million in 2005" or "thank god i won this ring and brought home the first championship in 88 years." seems like a pretty simple question to me.

I'm sure this was mentioned somewhere in this thread, but while dumping dye and contreras together wont hurt us this year financially, do we really want a 15 million dollar right fielder next year when we really, really, really need to sign Mark? I'd prefer the 8 million dollar option myself.
-
i have a feeling that our farm system may have a better year than most expect. Lumsden looks to put up very decent numbers and the rookie-ball level of talent seems to be better than anticipated judging from the 05 draft topic. too bad we couldnt get danks....

what if? what it? what if? why is everyone so paranoid? we need 7 starters and 5 good outfielders just in case of an injury now? what if jenks needs tommy john surgery? we better trade for danny baez just in case.

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Dec 31, 2005 -> 06:02 PM) And Jock Jones-type production is pretty good from center field. It just sucks from right field where the Cubs will have him. and it sucks to pay 5 million a year for it instead of 350,000 dollars

all ive learned in reading this thread is that WCSox has a man crush on willie taveras and that juan pierre and sammy sosa have the best arms in baseball.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Dec 30, 2005 -> 09:36 PM) I'm confused on part 6. Otherwise I agree with you. yeah, part 6 was a joke.

so the way i understand it the white sox have a few clear advantages in the tejada talks. 1. we seem to be the only team offering a ss in return for tejada. 2. we are not trying to cripple baltimore with payroll add-ons. 3. the count seems to be the second best (or best if you hate prior) pitcher offered. 4. the sox are not in the AL East. 5. tejada wants traded to a contendor. 6. arnie munoz was just rated the best prospect in baseball by baseball america.

i read all 20 pages of this thread and 3 were devoted to tony batista. unacceptable.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Dec 22, 2005 -> 03:27 PM) I don't care if it's illegal, I'm in support of collusion. Refuse to pay starting pitchers who intend on earning ridiculous contracts. Why should players and agents such as Boras pull the strings? How desperate would Milwood, for example, be if no one signed him through spring training? Then we'd be able to negotiate fair deals. When accusations arise of collusion, I'd just say, "We don't believe these players are worth this amount. Obviously, others don't as well." No one is forced to sign anyone. well if your goal is to give the owners more money each year then you are right on track. frankly, i'd rather have jon garland get the money than drayton mcclane.

i predict that AJ will be next years version of scott podsednik. he got so much fanfare in the postseason i predict he will claim an all-star spot. posada is wearing down and ivan rodriguez without steroids just isnt as exciting as the pudge on sludge.

QUOTE(sircaffey @ Dec 17, 2005 -> 10:13 PM) Didn't Ozzie or Hahn or KW say that they wanted to get a new #2 hitter who doesn't necessarily have a lot of speed, but more of an on base percentage guy. Wilkerson would most definitely fit into that category. This was early on in the off season so things could have changed, but I'm pretty sure one of them said that. yeah, that was said, and while wilkerson OBP indicates he'd be a good fit, his high number of strikeouts indicate he might struggle in the Iguchi role....but who knows, maybe it would fit wilkerson better to slap a little more.
-
so here's an honest question. i've never seen wilkerson play but his numbers (with the exception of his very decent OBP and his homerun total in 2004) seem unimpressive. Do we doubt that Anderson could hit 250 with 11 homers? anyway, everyone on this board loves this guy, what am i missing?

Who do you want to claim the last bench spot?

QUOTE(Ricky3353 @ Dec 17, 2005 -> 02:55 PM) I think Willie would be good if ever given a shot to play everyday. Plus, you can always use speed on the bench. if by good you mean incredibly mediocre. -
the greatest bullpen arm is sox history david lundquist

12/20 arbitration deadline (Garland,AJ,Crede,Mack)
shawnhillegas replied to SSH2005's topic in Pale Hose Talk
just say no to jery owens riding the pine all year. 400 at bats is AAA is what he needs. -
its on mlbtraderumors.com. one of the two looks like a gio clone, small, young lefty. the other is 6'8" 250...but my knowledge of the astros round rock staff is not what i'd like it to be. anyone know anything else? oops, just saw the other astros garland thread. sorry about that.
-
well here's the question, if you had already won a ring, would you consider playing with a crappy team if you knew you would start or would you ride the pine for a shot at another ring? i'd ride the pine but i think a good argument can be made either way, especially since you will probably get more cash if you are starting (even for the royals)

i think this is just too good to be true.

QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Dec 15, 2005 -> 09:32 PM) We can lose with Baltimore. If Orioles are demanding Ramirez AND additional prospects it's going to take more than Garland/Uribe to pry Tejada from the East Coast. For once, I'd like for this organization to be in a position to have another team overpay for our players. We don't even need to trade Garland immediately. Wait until Milwood and the remaining Boras client signs with their teams. Then we'll see how desperate Baltimore, Texas, and other clubs are for pitching when divisional teams are improving while they're staying pat. SOMEONE has to overpay. That's my goal with Garland. Even if we receive outfield talent, which obviously isn't necessary, I want Williams to extract the most in return from him. Be greedy instead of fair, for once. At worst, we have a completed rotation with a more than suitable replacement (McCarthy) available. i disagree, manny is not a bargaining chip because no one wants his contract and the red sox arent going to pay 10 million a year to baltimore. garland and uribe makes much more economic sense and gives baltimore flexibility. the question is just do they want to move their superstar (i doubt it, but i hope so)
-
QUOTE(Punch and Judy Garland @ Dec 15, 2005 -> 06:25 PM) How is he gonna trade for Mark Teixera, a Scott Boras client, who it has already been whispered will be looking for baseball's next 100 million dollar contract? if somebody gives a 1st baseman a 100 million dollar contract they deserve what will inevitably follow.....
-
i'd just like to make one very important point borchard > pujols. trust me on this one guys. and also, lorenzo barcelo is coming back with a vengance. so resign him and don't trade him.
-
i predict he will not add relievers or a centerfielder in his deal (or if he does add relievers they will be inconsequential, not brad lidge)....its blalock, tejada or brandon mccarthy becomes the best middle reliever in baseball.
-
man, all ive got to say is that this offseason is almost as stressfull as the postseason
-
ok, im going to approach this in the opposite direction. in some ways, i think hes right. but shouldn't we be wary of gaining attachments to people like rowand and chris young? i mean, yeah, rowand is everyones favorite, but in a year we will be talking about how much we love jim thome, right? i just think these connections to players are interchangeable. no one wanted black jack to leave, but it doesnt still keep me up at night.
