  1. I wouldn't scoff at the A's ability to compete in the West. If Sheets/Duchscherer (or just one of them) come back healthy w/ Anderson and Cahill, their rotation is legit. And a foursome of Bailey, Zeigler, Wuertz, and Devine can be lights out. They definitely need a bat, or a couple breakout seasons, but that pitching staff can be fantastic.
  2. I believe in order to gain eligibility at a position, you need to have played 5 games at the position. Some leagues require 10 games.
  3. You're too mindful of minor league statistics especially for a skinny teenager. Scrawny little Jeter had yet to hit for any power at age 19 as well. And Reyes' "power" numbers I am sure were a bit inflated thanks to his elite speed. I have yet to read a Hanley Ramirez comp for Castro though, so maybe your expectations are higher than mine. The best comps that I've read are Edgar Renteria and a lesser version of Jeter.
  4. Castro's been doing this at a tall 160 lbs. Not sure why you would hold it again him that he's only shown doubles power. He's rail thin. Doubles power sounds pretty good to me for where he is physically. Not really fair to compare players solely on how they performed at the same age.
  5. QUOTE (BearSox @ Jan 12, 2010 -> 10:15 PM) Two words, Brady Anderson. If that isnt enough proof that steroids clearly does make you a better ball player, I dont know what is. People use that example all the time, but I still wonder if it's really that good of an example. Yes Brady went crazy one season, but the very next season and for the rest of his career, he went back to being what he was before that 50 HR season. Did he only take steroids for that one season? I would think it would be crazy to believe he didn't at least take them the season after hitting 50 HR. He hit 18 HR that season.
  6. I despise the HOF now, and really don't care much about it. Such a hypocritical association. Sadly, these players that are being scapegoated today are/were more talented than the vast majority of players in the HOF.
  7. It must vary on what level each prospect is when they are part of the top 100 list. For instance, players like Martin Perez who are and have been in the top 100 (top 10 pitching prospects) while in the low levels have a much higher percentage of busting than guys like Hudson who cracked the top 100 when they "breakout" in the high levels. It would be interesting to see the percentage difference in these two types of pitching prospects.
  8. No one here said he was "bad" last season.
  9. QUOTE (BaseballNick @ Dec 30, 2009 -> 10:04 AM) Wright put up a line of .307/.390/.447/.837 last season, and he stole 27 bases. I wish White Sox players had those kinds of problems. He also hit 10 HR and drove in 72.
  10. Just to put it on record...I'll say Javy goes 16-9, 3.90 ERA, 195 K.
  11. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Dec 22, 2009 -> 10:00 PM) I just can't help but think Lester just had a career year and that it's over-exaggerated because he plays on an east coast team. Career year at age 25 after going 16-6 w/ 3.21 ERA the season before? I don't know why you would think that. Lester is filthy and an absolute stud.
  12. QUOTE (SouthsideDon48 @ Dec 22, 2009 -> 09:52 PM) I actually think Boston's rotation looks very similar to the White Sox rotation, it's almost a deadheat: Peavy=Beckett Buehrle Floyd>or=Lester Danks>Matsuzaka Garcia=Wakefield How does Floyd > or = Lester? Lester is a BIG step ahead in my opinion, and the best SP Boston has.
  13. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 22, 2009 -> 05:24 PM) Whats the other reason of his improvement then? He learned a new pitch to add to his other 15? He has a 4.52 ERA in the AL, and I fully expect him to be around that for the Yanks. His GB/FB is .70 for those who wanted to know, which is below league avg. I like taking a look at Buehrle's stats compared to Javy to really see what kind of a pitcher he is. Mark is better in everything but K's, and that says alot. Fangraphs has Javy's GB/FB at 1.20 last season and .98 career.
  14. Sizemore walked 60 times in 106 games. That's around 90 walks over a full season, a lot.
  15. If by similar you mean vastly inferior, I agree as well.
  16. Switch over to re-runs of King of Queens on WCIU while 4 through 1 hit (everyone but Beckham/Quentin)?
  17. QUOTE (jphat007 @ Dec 15, 2009 -> 04:41 PM) All of the above would be apart of the worst offense in the AL. Hell, even if we get a decent DH we could be one of the worst offenses. I agree. Swiss cheese lineup. It's going to be a frustrating year offensively.
  18. With the recent history of World Series SP struggling mightily the next season after the extensive workload, I'm not surprised to see the Phils make this move. They went through it with Hamels. We went through it with Buehrle. I think this is a smart/safe move for the Phils. Lee threw 272 innings last year, yikes.
  19. Matt Capps is a name I would love to see the Sox go after.
  20. Wolf hasn't been fully healthy for a while. When he was, he was very good. And he was much better away from Dodger Stadium. I like Randy Wolf. He's not Jeff Suppan.
  21. I question exactly how high the price for Halladay really is. I don't think Toronto gets a player like Danks or Floyd in whatever deal they end up taking.
  22. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Dec 7, 2009 -> 09:15 AM) Well the three best relievers on that list are easily Verlarde, Soriano and Gonzalez. I've had a man-crush on Soriano since about 2003. Gonzalez would fit a specific need in that he's a quality lefty. Valverde has been one of the top 5 or 6 closers in baseball the last 3 seasons. If I had a choice, I'd want Valverde. With our pick protected, and the market for Valverde and Soriano (I love Soriano as well) apparently dry, the best move might be to sign one of these guys to a 2-3 year deal and move Jenks to a team without a protected pick looking for a closer for whatever you can get.
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 4, 2009 -> 02:55 PM) Zito and Hampton have to be the two worst. Super-long-term deals for starters, and they just handicapped their respective teams with their presence. At least the shorter deals didn't lock up teams as long. Zito did have a pretty good year last season, so he's maybe earned 9% of that contract.
  24. QUOTE (BamaDoc @ Dec 4, 2009 -> 10:47 PM) There are some options out there. JJ Putz, Rafael Soriano, Mike Gonzalez...any of there guys could replace Jenks Not to be to mean Joey but if your statement above is correct, why would I trade players for Jenks and pay him 8 million or so if i can sign these guys for less and give up no players in trade? To keep your 1st Rd draft pick (Gonzalez and Soriano).
  25. I really despise career stat arguments as if it's a good indication on how good a player is today.
