Pink bats are part of fund-raiser for cancer foundation Associated Press Updated: May 9, 2006, 10:53 PM ET LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Hulking Jim Thome. Rugged Manny Ramirez. Brawny Adam Dunn. "The thought of these big macho men, swinging pink bats to help women with breast cancer ... what a novel idea," Louisville Slugger president John Hillerich said Tuesda Derek Jeter, David Eckstein and Marcus Giles are among dozens of players who intend to try them Sunday. This is the first time pink has been approved for bats -- dyed at the Louisville Slugger factory, they're usually black, brown, reddish or white. More than 400 bats were being made for 50-plus players. David Ortiz, Jim Edmonds, Mark Teixeira, Michael Young and Hank Blalock were also on the list. [More in URL] -

Pujols destroying baseballs.. PITTSBURGH (AP) -- Albert Pujols is so good and home runs come so naturally to him, he isn't even aware of the history he's making. Pujols tied a major-league record by homering in his fourth consecutive at-bat to account for the St. Louis Cardinals' only runs in a 2-1 win over the Pittsburgh Pirates on Monday night. "I don't look at numbers," Pujols said. "I don't know. I didn't know anything about it until you guys (reporters) just brought it up. That's not me. I get locked in on seeing the ball and helping my team win and hopefully do some damage out there. And that's what I did today." It was the 35th time in Major League history that a player has homered in four straight at-bats. Carlos Delgado, then with the Toronto Blue Jays, last did it Sept. 25, 2003. The previous time it was accomplished in the National League was by the Atlanta Braves' Andruw Jones from Sept.7-10, 2002. "It's awesome, but we got the win, and that's more important to me," Pujols said. "All the credit today should go to Jason Marquis." Pujols and the Detroit Tigers' Chris Shelton lead the majors with nine home runs and are just the fourth and fifth players to homer at least nine times in their team's first 13 games. Julian Tavarez threw a punch at Joey Gathright during an incident in the top of the eighth on Monday's game between the Red Sox and Devil Rays. After apparently getting spiked at the plate while covering home, Tavarez connected with a right to Gathright's chin. Players rushed the field from there, but nothing further happened. Tavarez will likely face a suspension over the incident, perhaps a harsh one. Maybe that will clear a spot for Craig Hansen in the Boston bullpen. Source: Boston.com

Bonds takes a turn as Paul Abdul Chronicle Staff Report Tuesday, February 28, 2006 Scottsdale, Ariz -- (02-28) 11:31 PST "Dancing with the Stars" might be too much for Barry Bonds' knee to take, but "American Idol"? No problem. Dressing up as Paula Abdul? Pass the wig. Bonds took the Paula Abdul role Tuesday as the Giants' veterans took a break from spring training to haze their rookies, and put themselves up for some ridicule as well. In "Giants Idol," the brainchild of new Giant Mark Sweeney, all players and training staff members in their first major-league training camp have to get up on the Giants dugout at Scottsdale Stadium and perform for a three-person judging panel. Hosting the event and playing the part of Ryan Seacrest was shortstop Omar Vizquel. Playing the part of Randy Jackson was second baseman Ray Durham. Playing the part of Simon Cowell was pitcher Jeff Fassero. And playing the part of Abdul, dressed in full drag and with fake breasts under his strapless get-up, was Barry Bonds. Five prospects plus the training staff interns performed Tuesday morning at Scottsdale Stadium. [More in URL]

Sutter to wear Cards cap on Hall plaque Reliever also played for Cubs and Braves in career By Barry M. Bloom / MLB.com • 2006 Hall of Famer Bruce Sutter: 350K • Sutter's HOF press conference • Leach on what Sutter means to Cards fans • After 13 years, Sutter a Hall of Famer • Hall of Fame calls on pioneering Sutter NEW YORK -- Bruce Sutter will enter the National Baseball Hall of Fame on July 30 with the interlocking S, T and L of the St. Louis Cardinals on his cap, an official of the shrine in Cooperstown, N.Y., said on Wednesday. "My sons remember me most as a Cardinal," Sutter said. "My one son is 26 years old and I don't think he's ever seen me without a beard. It's not as black as it used to be, but it's still there." Sutter's career hit its zenith, though, when he helped the Cardinals defeat the Brewers in Game 7 of the 1982 World Series. Sutter pitched two hitless, shutout innings to earn his second save of the series and punched out Brewers center fielder Gorman Thomas to give the Cardinals their last World Series title. "My family identifies with me throwing that last pitch to Gorman Thomas," Sutter said. "I'm certainly thankful for what the Cubs did for me. I respect their organization. It's the same way with the Atlanta Braves, an awfully fine organization. I respect everybody who's down there and that's still where I live today. But the Cardinals represent the best years of my career." [More in URL]

Hall of Famer Sutter says relievers overlooked Wed Jan 11, 2006 3:11 PM ET15 NEW YORK (Reuters) - Bruce Sutter, the newest member of baseball's Hall of Fame, says recognition of the importance of relief pitchers has been long overdue. "We're on the line every day," he told a news conference in New York on Wednesday, the day after becoming only the fourth reliever to be elected to the Hall of Fame. "The game is set up to get to us. It's a very important position," he added. Sutter said there were other relievers that belonged in the Hall of Fame besides his predecessors Rollie Fingers, Dennis Eckersley and knuckleballer Hoyt Wilhelm, "I wish I was going in with Lee Smith and Goose Gossage," he said about two other great relievers who were on the ballot but failed to win enough votes. Sutter, whose Cooperstown plaque will show him wearing a St Louis Cardinals cap, helped change the status of relievers, who are now highly prized to preserve the lead at the end of a game. "The Cubs gave me a chance to play, signed me as a free agent who was undrafted," Sutter said. "The first day I walked into Wrigley Field (in Chicago) was probably the best day of my life," he said. "But I guess people remember me with the Cardinals winning the World Series in 1982. I think my sons remember me most as a Cardinal." I'm happy about this news but wonder if Hagin will be going to the Sox now? I dont like Shannon though and the Cards will never let him go. There will be a 2pm press conference about this. It will be interesting to her the new combo in the new ballpark next year though. I love this move but even though Wayne Hagin wasnt the greatest he wasnt that bad. Anybody have any sound bites from Rooney so I can hear some of his calls for the World Champion White Sox? -
