Scott Hatteberg J.T. Snow Konerko isn't worth $9 million a year. I would just sign a cheap, slick-fielding 1st baseman that can hit for a decent average and get on base at a good clip.
-
I'd rather let Konerko leave via free agency and spend his $9 million on someone else. I still wouldn't want to add Griffey's contract.
-
I wouldn't do either deal then. I wouldn't trade Konerko for Griffey because of his contract and I wouldn't trade Everett, Anderson, McCarthy, and Crede for Chavez.
-
I would laugh if anyone said Griffey.
-
That's a weak argument. When Podsednik did come in the game in the 10th inning to pinch-run for Everett, there was already 1 out. There were no outs in the 8th inning when Konerko hit that leadoff bloop single.
-
Why is Griffey hitting .290 realistic? He hasn't hit near .290 since 2001 when he hit .286 in 364 AB's. He's over the hill and rapidly on the decline. You guys fail to see this.
-
Even if the Phillies needed an outfielder, it would take a helluvalot more than Everett to get Wagner. They already have 5 outfielders -- Bobby Abreu, Pat Burrell, Endy Chavez, Kenny Lofton, and Jason Michaels.
-
That's what I was the most pissed about. Ozzie always talks about "smart-ball" and he didn't even use it in the 8th inning. Konerko had that leadoff bloop single. Ozzie could have pinch-ran Podsednik for Konerko. Then, he could have either let Podsednik steal 2nd base or bunt him over there. Then a single would have scored him. Ozzie started Timo at 1st base for an entire game but he's afraid to put him out there for 1 inning? What the hell is that about? We were saying this in chat.
-
Oh yeah. Well, I think Ozzie was just pissed at Hermanson for throwing to 3rd base then. Maybe Ozzie was afraid that Hermanson would throw a wild pitch during the IBB. His control was ass today.
-
Dump Cruddy and some prospects for him. If Beane wants to move him and Kenny and Jerry truly want to win this season, they will make the move.
-
The reason Freddy's road ERA is so good is because he's usually not pitching in ballparks like the Cell and Coors.
-
I think Ozzie was pissed that Hermanson threw to 3rd base instead of getting the easy out at 1st so he yanked him. Ozzie obviously had to yank Hermanson anyways. He had no control whatsoever. At first, Vizcaino was going to pitch to Hafner but then he had a 2-0 count on him so he just issued the IBB.

You keep saying that Griffey just needs to adjust to hit .300+ again. Maybe it's just that he's old now and his skills have diminished?
-
Not a chance in hell. If San Diego's GM was stupid enough to trade Peavy for Everett and then have him start in the outfield at PETCO, he would get fired immediately.
-
You keep talking about Griffey's prime years. He is 35 years old now. Even star ballplayers eventually decline. Ken Griffey and Frank Thomas both have. Although I'd rather have Frank than Griffey at this stage in their respective careers because of Frank's high OBP due to his ability to draw a ton of walks. Griffey doesn't walk much. He strikes out a lot though.
-
Griffey hasn't hit above .300 since 1997 and he hasn't even been close to hitting for that high of an average since 2001 when he hit .286. He's not worth $50 million for 4 years either.
-
How about just trading for Randa and maybe a lefty reliever like Kent Mercker?
-
Adding a 35 year old player with $66 million left on his contract with the hopes of him reverting to his 90's form is not a very good idea.
-
Even without looking at the negatives to Griffey (old, injury-prone, bloated contract), it would still make no sense to add him. We have Podsednik and Dye for 1 more year, Rowand for 3 years, and good prospects like Brian Anderson and Ryan Sweeney coming up the ladder. Anderson could be ready next season. It would make more sense to spend money on a stud 3rd baseman, dump Konerko, and sign a decent 1st baseman like Scott Hatteberg.
-
Yes, Griffey's inability to stay healthy is one of the reasons the Reds can't find a taker. No team wants a 35 year old, expensive, injury-prone CF'er. I guess I just don't understand why fans would want him either. I think they are just too in love with the memories of Griffey in his prime. That is the player they want, not the present-day, declining Griffey.
-
I can understand how you think that a change of scenery could increase his offensive numbers but will a change of scenery make him any less injury-prone? When was the last year that Griffey made it through a full season?
-
Do you think he could get that money nowadays? Nope. So why does it matter? There's a reason Griffey is still with the Reds. No team wants to add his horrible contract. He isn't worth it.
-
Keyword: "was" He is 35 years old now and he's on the decline. Trading for a 35 year old injury-prone player with 4 years remaining on a bloated contract is downright retarded, no offence.
-
Trade for Griffey and move him to 1st base? Wow. So now you want to take away one of his positives (his defense in CF) by moving him to 1st base? Regardless, the Reds wouldn't eat enough of Griffey's contract to make it worth it. If they were willing to eat a lot of his contract, he would be a Yankee already.
-
Griffey wouldn't draw enough fans or produce enough on the field to justify adding his disgustingly bloated contract. He needs a change of scenery? Griffey is old and injury-prone. I think he needs to stick with the Reds who are stupid enough to be stuck with his contract.
