QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Nov 22, 2017 -> 08:50 AM) I'm really hoping he was just saying what the max each team could offer was, so even though the Sox have more our number would be $300k. For us to be below $1.2mil we would have had to trade away $2.5mil between Burr and Yrizzari. Considering we got Vieira for $500k, that seems like a lot. I don’t think he was because he mentioned that one of them couldn’t go over 300k. I’ll look for article.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 10:07 PM) I agree with Hi8 and RaBBit that there's no reason for these guys to do antyhing other than go to max out their bonuses, and so we might only have a shot at 1 or 2 guys that would be available for that $300k normally. However, I do wonder if this might shake loose another Thyagomizer type deal. When Ohtani was the only guy on the market, teams could look at the Yankees and Mariners and think "If we don't get Ohtani we're out the player we gave up for him". Now there's like 3 or 4 other backup plans on the market. Send the White Sox a player from your A-ball team for some of their bonus money, make your run at Ohtani, and if you miss out on him you go out and sign that catcher that was just released. Right, especially if a team makes a 2018 dip that compromises a verbal, sox could have nice leverage next signing period with trades as well. Now, call is tweeted out the top 5 teams with available money in 2017, sox weren’t on it and the last team had just over 1.2 left. Looks like the Burr / Yrizzari trades were for more than the Mariners trade. So we may not have too much left this period to trade.

That is...disgusting to put it lightly.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 04:32 PM) It is really a crappy labor practice to quite literally have different sets of rules for different nationalities. It should all be in one pool. Either draft or free agent, period. Oh I agree, but the reason they stood firm ont he draft was it would reduce spending. But then they agreed to reduced spending and acted like the draft was the problem! It was weird.

I don't think it should be too elaborate, could get too cute by half. BUT, from the White Sox point of view they were not in the penalty in 2016 and lost the opportunity to sign these players because they didn't do it illegally.

The draft would cut out a lot of shenanigans but it also hurts player wages. OTOH, the most recent CBA put such a harsh cap on it anyways I don't know why "the draft" is what the players stood firm on as opposed to the spending on the players.

QUOTE (gatnom @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 04:19 PM) For what little it's worth, I also don't think Cuonzo is a very good coach. Felt that way when Illinois fans wanted him more than anything and still feel that way now. He's not a third tier coach that would have hurt a player to stay with him. He's a coach that has relied on a slow pace too often. There's a difference.

Shohei Otani is likely coming to the USA
QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 03:27 PM) If not done this offseason I think the chance he goes full blown free agent is a better reality. Agreed.

BA's Cooper makes good point that it may not be a coincidence this punishment drops before Otani comes over.

Info on the players released: https://www.baseballamerica.com/internation...ospects-braves/ I like Soto if we can't afford the higher end guys. Love reading good baseball instincts with lower level guys.

What I'm taking from that is if the 300k exists, the most we can offer is 500k. But we don't know anyway.

QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 03:22 PM) Did anyone say if the $300k penalty is still in place? If not we are probably in good position not having any commitments for next year and money left for this year. I have not seen anything clarifying this. Passan's tweets on dipping into next years was vague on it.

Okay from Manfred's statement which is only an image from JJ Coopers tweet I can't seem to save: It seems the reason they came down so hard was that the braves were doing the same sort of thing as the red sox, but so dramatically as to avoid the "overage" penalty that would have prevented them from being players in the 2016 class, which they went BIG on. Beyond that year, they were doing the same sign a bunch of low level players to funnel money to other players to get past 300k. IF that's all they were doing, they'd have red sox sanctions. Makes sense. They shouldn't have had a 2016 INTl season, so all of those players are released.

Getting any would be nice. Our farm isn't necessarily young, so this provides a starting point to a new "wave" as Rick is trying to create.

Moore didn't even really deny it.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 02:39 PM) Question is, which team gets busted next? I doubt them and the Red Sox are the only ones cheating in one way or another when it comes to these signings/agreements. We know the punishments now, is a report going to come out? It may be interesting to know what was so brazen as to make this so much more severe.

I mean wilder was basically racketeering, I actually think we got off light but reality was he was committing crimes against white sox so it's not the same as an org "cheating".

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 02:22 PM) So basically what we did after the Wilder fiasco Ha, well at least they got some benefit to it pre penalty. We got nothing from Wilder AND then had to start from scratch years later.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 02:19 PM) Soto and Yefri del Rosario had also both made it to the United States. Wow. Soto had a nice 12% walk rate as a 17 year old in gulf league. No power yet. Could be interesting.

I am pleased with the MLB here. This is sufficient punishment and should be a deterrent in the future. I wonder if issue was braves literally paying out to some of these players prior to contract to ensure they never really hit the market.

Third rate coach, gtfo. s*** didn't hurt Jaylen Brown. Johnny Jones sure ruined Ben Simmons.

UCLA basketball players arrested in China
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Nov 21, 2017 -> 01:21 PM) Its probably good pr for both of them. Trump's base likely loves this stuff and I doubt that many of Ball's potential customers are going to side with Trump. It's why i'm not sure this will ever end. These two found each other and neither will blink. You aren't supposed to cross these streams.

The Sexual Assault problem
I'm sympathetic to the view that Trump's election led to the revelations about weinstein actually "meaning" something. Trump being teflon to those accusations I think made people realize how performative the reactions to these claims have been. Something like the problem was they got caught. Maybe not the best way to put it, but the sheer number of victims from cosby to weinstein and how they were enabled made people wake up to something.
