  1. I think Pace is safe, that whole new facilities thing was spearheaded by him. But I think everyone should be very skeptical of him. I think he should at least get a new pro scouting director. He's entered into season each year with one position that was absolutely atrocious and then usually that position gets killed by injuries. The kicking situation is inexcusable. All in the name of keeping good salary cap, which has now been chipped away at with lower-tier signings that have turned out to be wastes and we eat the money anyway.
  2. QUOTE (spiderman @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 09:16 AM) So what will his deal look like, once he signs? Sounds like we're talking a 4 year deal for 8-10 million for the teams that do have money to spend? This is my interpretation would be interested to see if anyone has any corrections 300k - 2mill signing bonus 500k minimum salary for 3 years arbitration eligible starting year 4
  3. Also FWIW DiPoto has been doing a public full court press for Ohtani. He has not set expectations that anything could happen, they have gone for it and are definitely creating the picture that the organization would be 100% committed to him. THat's why apart from money I think Mariners are going to get him (and west coast/city all play into that)
  4. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 08:16 AM) I'm okay knowing that he didn't choose the White Sox because he wanted to be with a team that had something we couldn't have -- like being on the West Coast, or having a better Japanese-American population. But it would really hurt knowing he was willing to choose Chicago despite all that, and that the Cubs simply beat us at pitching him. Because if he's considering the Padres, you know the contention window thing doesn't matter. Yeah I agree. With our offers financially the same, and with the "contending team, big money team" distinction seemingly not the difference, we went head to head and lost. Hurts especially so given how stupidly that fanbase treated Fukudome.
  5. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 3, 2017 -> 08:00 PM) Can't wait for the hot take that they wasted their money on Robert instead of going all in for Ohtani Eh, money ain’t the driver here (see rangers/yanks), but perhaps we could have done more public overtures a la Dipoto but I doubt it would have mattered
  6. So no safeties no kickers. Got it.
  7. I know announcer talk is boring but this color guy is horrific on the bears game.
  8. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 3, 2017 -> 10:57 AM) The Lions tried to implode the Silverdome today. It failed. Did a bus ruin it again
  9. QUOTE (Jerksticks @ Dec 3, 2017 -> 03:33 AM) I'm not a Trump fan. I just don't think Flynn is a traitor at this point. Evidence could change that, but at this point I'm in no position to make that judgement. Same with collusion. Unless I missed something. It's not like Turkey secretly called Flynn and said "Hey is this Flynn? Don't worry the call is scrambled, untraceable. Kipnap the cleric for $15M but don't tell anybody." Fricken Woolsey was there talking about it. Just speculating (not judging) this situation is why he wanted immunity. Perhaps the US was considering this move but couldn't put their hands on it obviously. Perhaps using Flynn's company was a government op. Speculating here of course. Thinking Turkey called Flynn and offerend him 15M for a kidnapping op is ridiculous. There's gotta be more to it than that right? I seem to recall you finding it very, very bad that a public official would take money in return for some policy change or favor. Flynn was not always pro-turkey, he was actually pro-coup when it first happened. Wonder what changed his mind?
  10. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Dec 2, 2017 -> 01:42 PM) I would try to sign Shae Simmons, the other Mariner non tendered. He doesn't throw as hard as Kahnle, but does have potential to be really good. Health, and mechanics have been his issues. Same thought. And mariners have handled pitchers mechanics so oddly in some situations. Worth a shot.
  11. Submitted for fact based opinion evidence: https://www.reddit.com/r/baseball/comments/...um=comment_list
  12. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Dec 2, 2017 -> 11:59 AM) Sadly, a Padres fan could have felt the exact same way about the White Sox signing Luis Robert. When somebody finds a padres fan they can ask them.
  13. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 2, 2017 -> 10:34 AM) Thanks. That is a good simple way to look at it. The comments about the debt not being high relative to other developed countries is a good sign. I think the thing that I find most irresponsible after years of frankly throttling the economy over debt concerns is now is the time in the cycle where you should do that, instead when debt explodes during recession (as it should) people freak out about it then. I’m also somewhat surprised how much more the GOP seemed to care about the Corp tax rate than the personal taxes side of the bill. I expected a giveaway of a tax bill, but the gospel that surrounded the 20% Corp rate meant really ridiculous pay fors coming from middle class that I didn’t expect. Essentially what you have to root for is the dividends being high enough to prop up shareholders from caring about the increased labor costs so wages can finally grow. With a trillion dollar stimulus you should see some of that but it will be interesting to see how much the fed fights against it with their own policies.
  14. QUOTE (ptatc @ Dec 2, 2017 -> 10:03 AM) So I guess the question is was the economy better during those times as opposed to the other times. I read that the debt increased more during the obama administration than any of the others. Is it not true of the Reeagan era. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_...tes_public_debt Chart at the top is helpful. Debt will shoot up in recessions/depressions and wars. You can see the 80s debt ride up due to decreased revenue and military spending, dip as a surplus from rising revenues occurs in 90s then increase from new wars and decreased revenue. Then shoots up in 09 due to a huge drop in revenue. But the rising debt in 80s/90s was rising less due to circumstances (war/recessions) and more due to policy.
  15. QUOTE (daggins @ Dec 2, 2017 -> 09:24 AM) Counterpoint - If Ohtani truly wants to be "the guy", I can think of no better franchise than the Padres, with no established stars, a few good players, and a boatload of high upside minor league talent. They have had one established star in history and it was a singles hitter. Being the guy in San Diego is like a tree falling in the woods. Come watch ohtani hit long fly outs in petco field! Not saying he would never sign there I just pray he doesn’t for baseballs sake.
  16. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 2, 2017 -> 09:14 AM) I bet they wouldn't lose to Grambling. What the hell..... Ha, well Mizzou very nearly could have fallen to D2 emporia st at home, though that was the night I guess they learned mpj was out a while
  17. QUOTE (danman31 @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 11:55 PM) Yeah, he was fun to watch. Mizzou is probably gonna be on the bubble all year (maybe that's the best-case scenario), but I'm just excited to have a competitive team back. Also, after watching the Northwestern-Illinois game tonight I'm actually confident Mizzou wins Bragging Rights. I think they are bubble for sure but could also lose to anyone with these long scoring droughts in every game. Really need Harris to develop.
  18. Please no San Diego for otani. That is such a boring franchise, I forget they exist most of the time. Great city that can’t create a memorable sports team to save its life.
  19. QUOTE (steveno89 @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 04:16 PM) I especially like the 3rd year $8 million club option. If he performs well and we like him that probably gets picked up. Also pretty reasonable insurance in case Collins and Zavala don't take the next step. Even if they do take the next step, there are worse things than having a ton of depth (see dodgers). Catchers get injured, it's nice when you don't replace them with players lucky to hit mendoza line.
  20. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 03:18 PM) Like I said in the other thread...I'm iffy here. If I spent 6 months finding people who were willing to lie about a Congressperson, and I got them to come forwards in sequence, do we just send away the congressperson with no time to evaluate their claims? This is still America and there ought to be some level of due process available. I'm not sure how to make that work, but that's one of those things we do believe in as a country, a chance to have your case heard. A working ethics committee would be the right place to do that, but I'm not sure it works well enough or fast enough for that to actually count. These people don't seem like they're lying and I have no reason to believe that in this case, but that's also the system we built in the Bill of Rights and I believe in the principles of that system too. Please, has he even denied any of the claims?
  21. I think Flaherty + Sierra is a reasonable offer for Abreu but I wouldn't take it and illustrates why I don't think we are really at much risk for "wasting an asset"
  22. Sierra was really rushed last year, but on other hand, cardinals thinking he could handle a MLB promotion is a positive to me.
  23. QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Dec 1, 2017 -> 01:52 PM) Cool, reasonable deal, reasonable player and will certainly help the young staff. The team option is a nice little cherry on top. Gives the Sox a lot of options come 2020. Esp considering last two years and available catchers, Castro went for 3 for 24 mill, nearly same deal. Considering Castillos defensive improvements I'd much rather have that same contract with Castillo.
  24. If we get flaherty and then max fried we could have giolito's high school starting rotation
