Can Illinois Survive?
http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/b...1104-story.html Sometimes good things happen. Chicago reduced the mortality disparity in breast cancer between black and white women from it's peak of 60% in the early 2000s. The city worked with groups like the Metropolitan Chicago Breast Cancer task force to reduce that disparity to 39%. People and government are still capable of doing some amazing things.

2017 Democratic Thread
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 27, 2017 -> 01:25 PM) I appreciate Pelosi for the good work she did 2006-2010 and how well she's held the Democrats in the House together so far this year, but I'm ready for another leader. Meanwhile, the GOP explanation for the VA races this year was "of course the DC suburbs broke against Trump/GOP." That doesn't explain why the Richmond suburbs did, too. Why a historically conservative county in Virginia is making national Republicans nervous Regardless of slowness of senate, the 2008-2010 congress was incredibly prolific and effective and produced a much better health care bill, immigration bill AND environmental bill. I'll never forget that. But it's time.

2017 Democratic Thread
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Nov 27, 2017 -> 12:44 PM) So, you realize that it took like 2 hours of her finishing up her work for him to depart from a top committee lead? Stop and think about how it would seem to some people if out of 435 Congresspeople, 1 of them has their sexual assault records selectively leaked and then that person is immediately pushed out...and that person just happens to be a long serving African American. This weekend is exactly why she's a good leader. Took one on the chin on Sunday morning show while simultaneously getting necessary work finished. She doesn't have the cache to take things on the chin anymore. Her reputation, which won't change, is that of someone protecting dem party establishment from losing power within. There will be a whole lot of excitement to get new people and ideas into the party in 2018, and how much of that support feels that Pelosi still speaks for them? Aside from that, her basic inability to message correctly is a problem. There are plenty of better answers to be given that could provide time to allow leaders to gently push Conyers out of chair lead, her answer was a deflection and a defense. As for precedent, she does not need to call for resignation but removing powerful committees to those with evidence like this is appropriate while calling for greater transparency to other settlements. Plenty of options, plenty of better ways out.

Anyway, this weekend solidified that Pelosi needs to indicate she would not seek majority leader if a dem congress is elected. I'm sure her willingness to protect members is what helped make her more effective, but with Conyers it is wrong and frankly dangerous. Not only should his behavior have come to light, but clearly from all involved his mind is not up to the job anymore. Let alone a top committee lead.

If I was Pace I'd fire my pro scouting director and hire a new one. He hit on hicks and debateable on Amukamara...the rest has been worse than bad. Just consistently eating money because their cap space is always worth more than their production.

Man, saw on Twitter that Fox has lost by 20+ points in 20% of his games with the bears, higher than any other Bears coach. He's also the losingest (it's a word now) bears coach in history. What a disaster.

Current personal White Sox T30 prospects
I loved Mendick at W-S, he was like the only consistent player until Eloy got there, but his AA and then AFL stints were pretty meh. He'll need to show his talent didn't tap out to go ahead of other interesting guys for me.

The Sexual Assault problem
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 27, 2017 -> 09:36 AM) I haven't seen any reporting or a claim from Barton that she was demanding something in return for silence. He doesn't have the right to demand that anyone he's had a relationship with be silent about it forever. If she's bitter that he ended their secret relationship, she has every right to tell people about it if she wants to. He's definitely a victim with regards to the photo/video being released, though. The fact that the photo was released to me indicates her "going public" included releasing embarrassing photos as proof.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Nov 27, 2017 -> 09:38 AM) It's amazing how I always forget about Zack Burdi until I see these lists. Same, but all of the bullpen guys are kinda boring to follow in minors. Their numbers seem kinda unrelated to their progress and status in org. Nobody could have predicted Bummer so high.

The Sexual Assault problem
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Nov 27, 2017 -> 09:18 AM) Yeah, there's definitely a major difference there in that the relationship was 100% consensual. Where the problem seems to be is that he's threatening her if she were to ever disclose the relationship at all. It sounded more like he didn't even want her talking about it to other people because it could be damaging to him. Sending out his nude photo is a violation on her part for sure though, and it is important to keep things in perspective rather than lumping it all together. That may be true but to me it reads as straight black mail and he was a victim.

Offer him pitcher, hitter, manager and owner duties I think that sets us apart.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Nov 26, 2017 -> 07:42 PM) They are morons. Spread one barely true headline and a guy doesn’t get a job. Incredible. Glad to have him probably longer term now. Ehhh people hated the hire and threw everything they had against it. Had UT floated Schiano days prior they could have avoided this.

Wow, I mean, schiano probably would have been as bad as what they just had but what candidate in the tier they expect would take that job?

What are odds that schiano actually gets coaches at this point? Lol there is a statewide revolt.

Just a reminder, again, that the eagles and bears both fired their longtime, couldn’t get over the hump coaches at the same time. Since then: - the eagles hired Kelly, made playoffs twice, completely remade roster, fired kelly - bears hired trestman, made playoffs zero times - bears hire fox, overhaul roster, finish in last place 3 straight years - Eagles hire Pederson, overhaul roster, are 10-1 in year 2 The rot in organizations run deep

We have basically every US baseball writer trying to write an Otani piece on where he’ll go. We should be open to possibility that they are asking people to speculate with distant hand knowledge.

Looks For A Match In A Jose Abreu Trade
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Nov 26, 2017 -> 09:29 AM) Is this in regards to Abreu or Avi? Because I think we’d do significantly better than a JD Martinez type return for Jose, even if it’s not ultimately enough to justify moving him. Jose. I don’t know, I’m just not buying it. That whole long BR article and none were convincing fits other than Boston and St Louis. And either of them could go out and buy Santana, so the choice to trade for Abreu needs to represent value against straight money offered. Since Jose is likely staring at 2 yrs $20 million in arb, the prospects back would equal that amount over $20 mil. I’m not convinced that will see a strong return.

Looks For A Match In A Jose Abreu Trade
We don’t have to extend him. I think people are overrating the risk in keeping him or trading him. Until I see a trade proposal rumor indicating otherwise, I expect a return near but slightly better than JD Martinez. That type of return isn’t going to change the trajectory of rebuild. Nor will the money saved. His money on the books isn’t preventing anything, so the worst case is that he stays and sucks, but what we lost out on in holding him I’m not convinced will be disappointing.

QUOTE (hi8is @ Nov 25, 2017 -> 07:19 PM) Coop + Herm * display history of success = good. Also interesting that he specifically asked for no financial aspects to be set forth. I don't know much about what Chicago has to offer when it comes to the cultural aspects requested. Still putting our odds at 1 in 1,000,000,000 ? Chicago at one time had a pretty decent Japanese population, but most moved back out west. It won’t be able to compete with West Coast cities around thriving Japanese immigrant settlements, but gets to say it is a diverse, modern city. Of course that works for cubs too and his current team is in a kinda small city I think so who knows what he’s looking for
