  1. Yeah that was more than I expected. Well, I expected basically that package minus Ramos.
  2. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 5, 2017 -> 02:33 PM) The catcher is another guy who had my attention. Yeah as soon as I wrote that I meant to change it. The top 5 guys I clearly want just didn't expect. Soto was at the lower end and thought we could sign him. I still am more optimistic about us hopefully using some of our 1.1 in a trade. To me, that's best case.
  3. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Dec 5, 2017 -> 01:04 PM) Looks like he just deleted that tweet and now says he hasn't signed. Either way, out of our range it looks like. That was the only guy I wanted (assumed Maitan would not)
  4. ugh, things were actually looking up for missouri and now our OC just left for UCF, which means Lock likely goes pro... Yeesh.
  5. I gave Pelosi a lot of deserved crap for her tone-deaf and poor leadership immediately after the initial comments. But here is some praise. While the latest allegation tipped the scale, she didn't wait for everything to blow over and had been working with the CBC to push him to step down.
  6. QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Dec 5, 2017 -> 09:24 AM) "Please elect my son"
  7. QUOTE (GoSox05 @ Dec 5, 2017 -> 08:59 AM) What policies does Martin O'Malley even back? I have nothing really against him, it's just what does he even stand for? Usually to pose shirtless.
  8. Made playoffs and top points in 2 leagues. Missed playoffs in 3rd, oldest league that I'm a part of. In 7 years, I have never made the playoffs but also never finished last (which has punishment). It's an incredible streak.
  9. QUOTE (Donaldo @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 06:44 PM) Sign-and-flip? Castillo should fetch a quality prospect or two at the deadline. Coming off a great offensive year at the offense starved catcher position, and showing large defensive improvement he then promptly signed a 2 year 15 mill contract. Maybe he’d get a melky haul but I don’t think it will matter that much.
  10. Also Im just rooting for DiPoto. No reason, wouldn't want him as our GM. But I miss the art of the mlb player for mlb player trade and he's the only one still bothering with that. And last year had such rotten luck for them. But, basically they are a mirror image of how sox ran for a long time. lots of interesting pieces, razor thin margin for error, trying to go for it with a wiped out farm system. And...I dont' know why I want it to work out for them but DiPoto had a nice podcast so I'm rooting for him.
  11. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 10:03 AM) If Donald Trump were to go down as President, I would want it to be because of something other than obstructing this investigation. In isolation, this would probably warrant a censure.
  12. QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 10:53 AM) The White Sox may be able to benefit from the Ohtani situation and maybe also because of the plethora of international guys out on the market. The finalists for Ohtani have been announced: Cubs, Padres, Dodhers, Giants, Rangers, Mariners, Angels. Cubs, Padres, Dodgers and Giants are all limited to a bonus of $300K. The kid is said to not care about $$ and that's kind of evident with 4 of the remaining teams on his list currently unable to spend more than $300K. Texas has $3.53 million in space. They can still acquire an additional $1.5 million roughly though for a total of around $5 million to offer. Seattle has traded for International space and has a total of $1.57 million. They can acquire between $2-$2.5 million more in space though for a total of $3.5-$4 million. The Angels currently have $1.315 million. They can trade for roughly $2 million more in international space and spend between $3-$3.5 million after doing so. The White Sox still have about $1.1 million in international space. They could theoretically help a team like the Angels get him if more money is a contributing factor. Where did you find this?
  13. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 10:33 AM) Ah ok, I misunderstood your premise. SOS is what doomed those teams. This year SOS didnt really matter. Yep, but SOS only truly kills non-blue bloods. If you want to get in that top 4, you gotta be perfect. If Alabama has a blemish, they still know alabama will be good on the mainstage. But nobody wants to go out on a limb for UCF or something and then see them blown out. If Alabama or OSu gets blown out, just shows how incredible the other team was.
  14. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 10:26 AM) TCU and Baylor got exactly this amount of handwringing in 2014 though... I'm confused by your premise, neither of those teams were put in the championship, and I'm saying if the decision for #4 will be between a OSU/Bama/USC vs. an Oklahoma State/Baylor/TCU level team...we all know who gets that slot.
  15. Yeah, Mercer was bad. But they scheduled FSU for game one. Their schedule isn't that different than OSU's, OSU scheduled Oklahoma, Alabama scheduled FlaSt. It's just alabama knocked out FSUs QB. The others are just a quirk of conference scheduling. I'm not really going to shed tears over USC/OSU/Alabama. They all got a fair hearing. You know if one of those schools was Oklahoma St. or Washington or some level school they aren't getting this level of handwringing.
  16. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 09:56 AM) The team signing him will also be paying $20 million to the Japanese team that has his rights as a posting fee, so it's a little more than the compensatory pick price altogether. Still a bargain, but $22 million, not $2 million. Good point.
  17. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 09:44 AM) Essentially, though years two and three could be a bit more depending on performance. On rare occasions players reach around a million by year three. Right, this is the Bryant situation right? Assuming Ohtani is a top of the rotation fixture it probably is more likely he's escalated to that number (Whatever it grows to by then). But still, a freaking bargain. If everyone's right, a team will be getting a top of rotation starter for the signing bonus of like a compensatory pick in the amateur draft. We gave Gavin Sheets 2 million.
  18. QUOTE (KagakuOtoko @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 09:48 AM) Doesn't that in fact mean they are simpletons who cannot think for themselves? If you cannot realize that comment is a general statement and not one for the lazy liberals in the metro areas; then I don't know what else you would call it. I don't think so. You see people from all situations embrace that philosophy. It's not "I can't think for myself" because it's rather that they made the calculation that the best thing for them and the country is that the other side is embarrassed.
  19. I don't agree with that. I think the issue at present and maybe forever is the idea of antagonistic politics. It's not as important that good policy comes out that benefits me, it's that I benefit from my politicians actively hurting the other side. The "Lib Tears" Doctrine. Grassley's supporters, even if they are unemployed or alcoholics,, know that Grassley's not talking about them, he's talking about those other deadbeats that don't work at all and live in cities
  20. QUOTE (GenericUserName @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 09:36 AM) I think he would end up getting super 2 designation so he would probably get arb in year 3, but otherwise this is correct. Thanks, I had heard arb in year 3 but I wasn't sure how that was "counted"
  21. I think Pace is safe, that whole new facilities thing was spearheaded by him. But I think everyone should be very skeptical of him. I think he should at least get a new pro scouting director. He's entered into season each year with one position that was absolutely atrocious and then usually that position gets killed by injuries. The kicking situation is inexcusable. All in the name of keeping good salary cap, which has now been chipped away at with lower-tier signings that have turned out to be wastes and we eat the money anyway.
  22. QUOTE (spiderman @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 09:16 AM) So what will his deal look like, once he signs? Sounds like we're talking a 4 year deal for 8-10 million for the teams that do have money to spend? This is my interpretation would be interested to see if anyone has any corrections 300k - 2mill signing bonus 500k minimum salary for 3 years arbitration eligible starting year 4
  23. Also FWIW DiPoto has been doing a public full court press for Ohtani. He has not set expectations that anything could happen, they have gone for it and are definitely creating the picture that the organization would be 100% committed to him. THat's why apart from money I think Mariners are going to get him (and west coast/city all play into that)
  24. QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Dec 4, 2017 -> 08:16 AM) I'm okay knowing that he didn't choose the White Sox because he wanted to be with a team that had something we couldn't have -- like being on the West Coast, or having a better Japanese-American population. But it would really hurt knowing he was willing to choose Chicago despite all that, and that the Cubs simply beat us at pitching him. Because if he's considering the Padres, you know the contention window thing doesn't matter. Yeah I agree. With our offers financially the same, and with the "contending team, big money team" distinction seemingly not the difference, we went head to head and lost. Hurts especially so given how stupidly that fanbase treated Fukudome.
  25. QUOTE (fathom @ Dec 3, 2017 -> 08:00 PM) Can't wait for the hot take that they wasted their money on Robert instead of going all in for Ohtani Eh, money ain’t the driver here (see rangers/yanks), but perhaps we could have done more public overtures a la Dipoto but I doubt it would have mattered
