J.D. Martinez Reportedly Seeking $210MM Deal

Both Jacoby Ellsbury and Shin-Soo Choo landed seven year contracts in their recent trips through free agency, with Choo’s contract beginning in his age-31 campaign.

Those are two reasons why I don't think JD gets that kind of money or contract.

Boras always shoots for the stars, and despite what seem to be unreasonable expectations, he continually surprises me.

I'll bet JD gets something in the realm of 6/$150

That's a good guess. I'm thinking 6/165-170

$25-30 million per year for a relatively one-dimensional offensive player (corner OF/DH) is crazy in this day and age...especially with all of those contract years in the 30's.

(And yet the Tigers were happy to throw that money at Justin Upton.)

Well sure, because they just trade him, because the league always bails the Tigers out of their bad contract decisions.

Well it's possible he would have opted out if he stayed in Detroit. And his contract really isn't too bad. Its not like that Fielder or Cabrera one.

League revenues are growing at more than 5% per year right now. At that pace it should take less than 15 years for contract values to double. At that pace, $25 million for JD would be something like $12 million for him in 2005. That year, Johnny Damon signed with the Yankees for 4/$52 as a 32 year old. Martinez has been a comparable player, maybe a bit better than Damon was, during the years preceding his deal, and he's reaching FA younger.

If we can assume the local broadcasting rights deals continue unabated...despite the cord cutters/higher subscription fees.

The stock market has been doubling that pace, but how long before the long-awaited recession hits after nearly a decade of growth?

This is completely irrelevant to what I just said. The 5% revenue growth year over year for a decade has basically happened. The doubling of salaries has basically already happened. We need to adjust to what we consider a crazy salary before we try to play the free agent market. A $12 million guy in 2005, a Jermaine Dye or Johnny Damon, is a $25 million guy right now. That's the price we will be paying next year. Revenue growth in the future only has a limited impact on these numbers since they are what is being signed and afforded right now.

And furthermore, although there was a small revenue hit, we just had the biggest economic collapse and recession since the Great Depression and baseball still pulled through all right.

. It has been known for some time that the Red Sox and J.D. Martinez have ongoing interest, with Boston reportedly dangling a five-year offer. In the latest update, Jon Heyman of Fan Rag writes that “acquaintances” of the open market’s top slugger believe Martinez is willing to wait to get a six-year deal — even if it means allowing camp to open without a contract in place.

With a lack of reported interest in Martinez, I wonder if Boras convinces to DD to bid against himself. Isn't that kind of what happened with AZ and Grienke?

I'd give them 24-hours to accept my offer. If he doesn't accept, pull it. They (JD and Boras) will come crawling back.

Same here but the thing is Boras knows DD is desperate and has done nothing this off season to bolster their offense.

With this ridiculous offseason I'm surprised people are still anti-player position and pro-front office.

These players just worked for pittance relative to their worth for 6 years, now they are told they are too old to pay. I hope JD takes a good sum of the healthy profits from the Red Sox and then continues to be a great power hitter.

Well, DD has done it before with the Ordonez signing. I wonder if Boras will go into mourning if DD retires before he does.

Oh, he has plenty of money to take out of the Nationals if that happens

I think the slowness of the market is largely due to this year's free agent crop being pretty mediocre overall compared to how good next offseason's will be.

It's definitely a big part of it.

As good as Martinez is, his big tool is power in an era where power just became the most abundant tool available.

And yet the Red Sox couldn't find power for their lives last year, re-signed Moreland who was a part of that, and who behind Martinez would provide it?

I actually like the Moreland signing for them. Way better value than signing Hosmer. But yeah, not really a power guy.

The longer this drags on the more likely they are to circle back to Abreu.
