Last year's team certainly didn't scream "relying on Ginobli and Duncan"

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 03:21 PM) Just in case - have you followed the case Kevin Drum has made trying to link it to exposure to leaded gasoline? Yes. It certainly makes the most sense, but I hesitate to state that as THE cause without more research. However, I 100% support that study being used to fix infrastructure causing existing lead contamination because at the very least you are preventing lead poisoning with the possibility of reducing violence drastically. Chicago has had a lot of lead contamination problems recently come up...it could be a reason. -
QUOTE (Rex Kicka** @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 03:12 PM) He's only on the ballot in like 5 or 6 states. Oh man I thought it was just a handful. Makes sense.

If dominos pizza was a startup in san francisco they'd have a 30 billion dollar valuation.

QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 01:34 PM) I still think the most likely path the Sox take is to try to add in the offseason for one last hurrah, and then aggressively dismantle the whole thing at the trade deadline when it fails. I think this because the 2017-18 offseason is the first one where there looks to be absolutely no argument for contention, barring the unforeseeable arrival of new breakout stars. Fast forward to trade deadline 2017 "There will be better deals in offseason, nobody wants to unload major league talent in playoff push" Fast forward to offseason 2017 "I mean we have 3 of the best pitchers in the AL, and the jays said we could get 40 year old bautista at HALF PRICE for only Jose Guerroro JR and others" Fast forward to trade deadline 2018 "We can get better deals in offseason, let's just trade lawrie for some spects"

I think the fact that white sox fans in this thread are so obssessed with the red sox prospects over others is a sign that we will get less of them than we think.

QUOTE (JUSTgottaBELIEVE @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 01:02 PM) Even though he had a terrible year, I'd rather take a flier on Carlos Gomez than request JBJ as the primary return piece in a Sale trade. If Moncada or Ben aren't included, it's an absolute failure of a trade IMO even with JBJ and other well-regarded Red Sox prospects. I'll be pissed if they trade Sale for a package of JBJ, Devers, and Kopech plus lower level prospects or something similar. Despite a poor season offensively, Gomez still managed an fWAR of 0.9 over 118 games and can be had for VERY cheap this offseason. He's very cheap because he's been bad for a while and is older. Sox don't need "good enough". We've been doing the "We had -1 war in CF, even getting *Average* production will be a big improvement!" for 3 years now. We need all stars, multiple. But to choose between different options i'd be through the moon getting JBJ if the other option was Carlos Gomez.

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 12:58 PM) As someone with family deeply rooted in Chicago gangs, you should take my word for it. I'm not saying you are wrong, I think that is a factor, but Chicago was on the same macro trend as the rest of the country/world until 3/4 years ago, when it stopped, and RICO cases taking out gang leadership happened in other cities like NYC which had gang problems too. So, why here? It's not just Robert Taylor homes going down. That also happened in cities nationally. -
That was a great sentence I wrote.

QUOTE (TaylorStSox @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 12:46 PM) In Chicago it can be directly tied to 2 actions, the dissolving of leadership and the destruction of the high rise projects. For example, the Robert Taylor homes were a stronghold/safe place for the BD's. Those members were displaced and spread throughout the southside. Some of the gangs are almost 60 years old now. Generations identify with them. Culturally, they're more than just gangs. I find that difficult to attribute it to. Chicago was following a national wave. I think the destructoin of public housing was certainly a contributing factor, and the removal of gang leadership causes changes, but there's no problem unique to chicago that was not found in NYC/DC/LA...except there is one thing, Chicago has not seen population growth. -

I've said it before but I find it startling that we really don't know why crime rose dramatically in the 60s-80s and then fell just as dramatically in 90s-00s. And now it rises again and we don't know what to do. That's scary. -
I think draft and follow should be allowed to draft and follow for international draft. Since they may be getting paid from a professional league, allows both sides to make decisions.

QUOTE (OmarComing25 @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 12:20 PM) I'd probably be OK with Benintendi/Devers/Kopech/2 wild cards. I probably would be too. Especially since Benintendi had a nice debut with good OBP. What has turned me to these lower packages is that "more limited" package from red sox (i.e. we don't take their entire top ten farm players people want) is that I really like benintendi/kopech and would prefer a package around that over the top 4 prospects from most other orgs. The quality of those 'spects stands above rest.
-
QUOTE (SoxPride18 @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 12:09 PM) Benintendi, Devers, Groome, and Kopech are a must for me. Add 1 or 2 more like Swihart or Rodriguez and we have a deal. You act like Rodriguez is a throw-in.

in between elections I think cable news doesn't matter, and then election rolls around and they basically decide the coverage that local news/media follows. If fox is spending 20 hrs a day on it, people are going to expect it to be covered.

QUOTE (shipps @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 10:54 AM) The violence issues in Chicago are all traced back to poverty, lack of opportunity, and its continuous cycle. Not the availability of guns. On the other hand, we aren't only city with poverty or lack of opportunity and our rates have been much higher than national average. And after 20 years of decline it suddenly spiked up. Chicago isn't going to be able to eradicate poverty, but it should be able to tackle violence again. I also want to say how great it is of Whole Foods and Marianos for opening up stores in Englewood recently. Corporations have more ability to help start up a local economy there than relying on small mom and pop stores in such an economically depressed area with high violence. The pictures from the first day of that store opening the trib ran were heartwarming. -
If you get injured for the year you lose your surname in my brain.

QUOTE (Y2JImmy0 @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 09:52 AM) I think that's ultimately what they'd end up getting. Beninetendi/Devers, pitching, some wildcards and possibly Swihart. Right, and it's not like wildcards aren't good returns. Hell, we started penciling in TIlson as our starting CF and he was not even a cardinals top ten prospect. In the Peavy trade the wildcards ended up our best returns.

It's a helpless feeling in the city. I can't believe how long it took mayor to respond. I find myself hoping the extra police will help, but unconvinced. U of Chicago crime lab released in June their study that Youth Guidance's Becoming a Man program was effective in reducing crime. https://www.youth-guidance.org/ I've been donating there but have not volunteered. I've become a mentor for a school in Auburn Gresham. Really wish if it really does impact that Chicago could fix the lead issues. -
With Alshon Jeffery/AJ Green and Larry Fitzgerald along with Sammy Watson I thought I'd be playoff bound after week 2. Then Watson goes down and I'm getting nothing more than "fine" games from those guys and Forte is not the sure 10 plus player due to catches he once was and my team sucks.
-
I think my dream package that would be out of asking price for red sox is benintendi/devers/rodriguez/kopech/2 wild cards I think I'd be disappointed in less than benintendi/devers/rodriguez/2-3 wildcards. They may not be the beat your socks off packages people wanted, but I think some are motivated off more the idea of punishing the team we trade with than actually finding a deal with both parties. Though Sale/Q are amazing and cheap, there is still a lot of risk that they get injured and if you trade your whole farm system - you are out of a job. There needs to be some realism and frankly I think most red sox fans would think giving up a benintendi level prospect alone gets them out of giving up a rodriguez/devers 2nd tier.

QUOTE (shysocks @ Oct 18, 2016 -> 09:02 AM) He is a Mormon, and Mormons have been more resistant to Trump than the rest of the Repub voting base. I only know this because 538 had a piece about the [remote] possibility of McMullin becoming president last week. Win Utah, neither Trump nor Clinton gets to 270, get picked by the House. http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/how-ev...the-presidency/ Im aware, but no other third party polls so high anywhere, strange he wouldn't have a blip on any national polls unless he's not included. And it would make sense NOT to include him as he missed ballot on quite a few states. I think the fight for the GOP will be between the Utah republicans/college educated whites and Evangelicals/high school grad white males.

Do national polls include McMullin as an option? Weird that he could poll so high in utah but under 1% nationally.
