OBAMA/TRUMPCARE MEGATHREAD
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 8, 2013 -> 04:15 PM) Wasn't brought up here yet, but the Incidental Economist blog has a whole bunch of posts covering the Oregon Medicare study that came out. Oregon Medicaid – Power problems are important How should the new Medicaid study change our policy preferences? Oregon Medicaid experiment “is a Rorschach test of people’s views of the ACA” What about power for the blood pressure result? (And so much more) That study is a prime example for Nate Silver's prescription in "The Signal and the Noise" to prefer a Bayesian method of scientific knowledge.

The Democrat Thread
on NPR this morning, apparently LAPD brought 70 police in riot gear to a party of black students at USC. 6 were arrested. They were responding to noise complaints, the students had registered the party with campus officials and had been checking student id's at door. No guns, weapons or drugs were present. Across the street a party of white students went unharmed. But since there are no racists, we can only justify this by saying they were using some formula, or that the neighbors felt threatened and needed to be prepared.

Technology catch-all thread
I have comcast and have had no problems. However, I'd never rent equipment from the cable company, it's a racket for them and they treat the equipment like hell. I remember returning a router to comcast at their equipment drop off, she grabbed it from me with two fingers and tossed it across the room into a box.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 8, 2013 -> 04:06 PM) 94 Rockets. Unless you consider Sam Cassell or 2-3 year man Robert Horry a star. Ha, I was gonna say Vernon Maxwell but then I looked it up and holy hell. 13 ppg on 38% shooting. I was young those years, but I thought he was better than that.

QUOTE (GoSox05 @ May 8, 2013 -> 04:00 PM) Hawks penalty kill has been awesome, Hawks power play has been not awesome. Tepid and boring PP. Last night was the first playoff game I've been able to catch. Felt gooood. I'm not too concerned about our first line, we should just more be thrilled that our 3rd line has done what they should be doing. Also, loved Foley calling out how bad Handzus has been, then Handzus scoring immediately. I love when the reverse jinx works out.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ May 8, 2013 -> 04:03 PM) You can seriously make the argument that the only two teams to win an NBA Championship in the last 30 years that didn't have atleast 2 stars on it were the 2004 Pistons and the 2011 Mavericks. Considering Chandlers progression, fair to say he propelled himself to "star" status that year.

f***ing drunk driver
QUOTE (Jake @ May 7, 2013 -> 06:28 PM) My brother passed the field sobriety test and almost got off without a breathalyzer. He later blood tested .19 -- the legal limit in CO is .05. Sounds like field sobriety test just sucks as an indicator. It's so crazy to think what something like that can do. I'll be honest, my brother and I think the reason he got accustomed to doing that was when he drank underage. As a high schooler, he would go to "parties" and drink with his friends and he would basically have to drive home so not to attract the attention of our parents. Of course, my parents would say that they would pick him up anytime for any reason, but high school kids don't weigh the potential death of self or others versus getting grounded very well. Once you've done it a few times, you start to think it is okay. "My threshold is higher." "I've done it a million times." It's a tricky problem to solve because the people committing the offense are physiologically disabled to a certain extent when it comes to making good decisions. I'd imagine many of the people that do this (not all, by any means -- there are some assholes that know exactly what they are doing) would say they wouldn't ever drive drunk when they are sober. Then they have some drinks, maybe don't realize how much they had, maybe think it's just a one time thing, think it is their only option that night for some reason...who knows. With all that said, AFAIK drunk driving rates are trending downward. It's hard to deal with because it is so entrenched with some people...it's far easier to try to get young people to never start than it is to get the town drunk to quit doing the thing he's done for 20 years. My dad said when he was a younger guy in 70s, 80s he and his friends would ride MOTORCYCLES drunk. They never even thought about how that might be illegal -- he said if you got pulled over, lots of cops would just take your alcohol or drive you home. This is why I'd prefer to raise kids in a walkable neighborhood. Too many deaths from automobile accidents in my hometown and towns around me. Really hit hard on a few.

QUOTE (Jake @ May 7, 2013 -> 07:13 PM) With all the times in the past two weeks that the Bulls have had "no chance" of winning....I can't help but have some optimism for now. The nice part of all the injuries is that I won't feel that bad if/when we lose, but we play so hard and so well that it is just magnificent to watch no matter the result -- especially when "win" is a potential result no matter who plays. It's fun to watch their grind right now. The way they were doubling lebron, where 3 different players would come in, pressure, then return, was so great. Joakim has turned into a great center. Better than probably we fans can even realize, with the amount of times he probably bails out teammates without us noticing. Truly great playoffs for him so far.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 7, 2013 -> 07:10 PM) Combine any chances of the heat tensing up with the fact that the Bulls can crank down their defense in the last few minutes if its close...and yes. Wellp, I'm preparing for an LBJ 40pt first half. If we are within 10 after 3 I'll start feeling confident.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ May 7, 2013 -> 04:54 PM) Nate is faster than Rose, but I don't think he'd be able to finish at the rim since Lebron can block him from behind. Still, if we're talking about Lebron having to adjust to play D on Nate, i'm happy because that means it's a close game in the 4th. It really just depends who else is on the floor. Because the reality is if Ray Allen is out there whoever is guarded by him should take him. (This is possible for nate, deng, butler or bellinelli). If Ray Allen is off floor, I think you'll want to go for the height advantage you'd have of deng/butler vs. Chalmers.

QUOTE (Rowand44 @ May 7, 2013 -> 04:48 PM) I'd keep Jimmy on LeBron til he proves he can't guard him. I love the idea of Luo and his length on Wade. That's obviously assuming Luo is able to come back soon. Yeah I'm kind of underestimating how much this illness would affect Deng.

I think it's a waste to use Lebron on Nate, Lebron's asset would be to help d against our bigs. The heat just made a huge mistake leaving Ray Allen out there, bulls just kept picking until he'd guard nate and nate would take him.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ May 7, 2013 -> 02:55 PM) If the Bulls can actually get Deng back in the next game, so that they can have an extra body to throw at Lebron, they can make this even tougher on him. Hinrich on Chalmers, Butler on Wade, Deng on James, Noah on Bosh, That is a great d lineup against the heat. Hinrich is a luxury at that point on chalmers (likely will get butler some rest since you can do hinrich on wade and keep nrob in game vs. Chalmers). Really hope Bosh can stay cold from 3. Heat become much easier to defend when that s*** isn't working.

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 7, 2013 -> 02:44 PM) You know the Heat and LeBron's strategy was for him to get his teammate's involved, and then take over the 4th quarter while they dialed up their defense and shut us down. Thing is, while LeBron has shifted to Rose in the 4th quarters and shut him down, they had no real answer for Nate. I expect LeBron to be a bit more aggressive in the next game instead of waiting til the 4th quarter. He's our irrational confidence man we needed dearly in 11.

QUOTE (iamshack @ May 7, 2013 -> 03:38 PM) I think their brand is irreparably damaged.. I just think it will take a lot of capital investment they don't have the market confidence to make. Their stores are too big to change, same for Sears. It's a lot easier for Gap/J Crew/etc to pivot and start this more fashion oriented trend. Hell, sears Lands End Canvas actually has really nice stuff, but you have to walk through 4 miles of generic brands to get there. It's hard to move toward these trends of retail as curators and clear style. Just too much space.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ May 7, 2013 -> 02:29 PM) http://www.bloomberg.com/news/2013-05-03/j...hnson-team.html Not sure that's a surprise, I'm guessing they gave Johnson a hell of a contract to lure over. He was such a hot get since people thought he'd save retail. Guess not. I like a lot of what JC Penny carries, but their stores are old and gross. I expected Johnson to make a flagship store showing what to expect, new layouts, brighter, cleaner, and I don't think that happened. So, the stores basically removed discounts and looked the same. Such poor execution.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ May 7, 2013 -> 02:18 PM) I'm truly starting to believe that Jimmy Butler is going to wind up being an All-Star. SG is so weak, if he can stick there in the east you might be right. Jimmy's FG% was only 38%, but 9/10 from FT. That's lower than I thought, but considering his minutes and his effort on D he had to exert, to me it's still incredible.

Financial News
QUOTE (Y2HH @ May 7, 2013 -> 12:39 AM) It's easiest to start with what you know, even if you don't know you know it. Think about a few things in your life you cannot live without, and look into the various companies that make those products. For a quick example, I'd guess that 40% if what's in your refrigerator is made by ConAgra. The answers for investing are all around us, and people simply don't notice it. Take iPhones and Androids, what compromises them? I invested a few hundred shares of Corning, who make gorilla glass. Why? Because I know phones, tablets, etc. All of them use gorilla glass. Corning was trading around 12 for the longest time and in the past few weeks has started to get noticed. It's at almost 15 now and pays a dividend. These are the types of stocks I look for. Who makes something everyone used but nobody seems to have noticed yet? From food to electronics, someone's makes every little detail that goes into it. I saw your tip in the tech thread on that, it's really good advice. Joel Greenblatt harps on that a lot in his douchey titled books. I just need to keep my eyes open like that and practice. I'm still going through basic stuff like Benjamin Graham's how to interpret financial statements. Any reading material you suggest that helped you?

Woke up and the Bulls still won. I think what amazes me most about Jimmy's performance is during breaks you could see him looking a bit tired. What I'd expect them is him to start missing his FTs and jumpers. Nope. I feel like he was perfect FG% in the fourth, including that huge 3 (which by the way, are much less flat than they used to be). Lebron still took Jimmy easily on about 25% of his drives, but he strangely didn't try Bellinelli that much. I'd expect that to change. Belli did a great job defending Lebron and staying in good position, but Lebron can still beat him a good amount if he tried. (Of course, part of that is our help D being so good last night Lebron knew he'd get mugged if he beat our guards)
