Explosions at end of Boston Marathon
Let's just hope we are correct and not jump to conclusions. Let's remember 96 olympic bombings and 00 anthrax cases where wrong people were arrested initially.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Apr 17, 2013 -> 06:19 PM) Maybe find a reno in OP? Keep the costs lower for now, have plenty of time to make the place yours before kids, etc. Definitely, difficulty is reno's are going for straight cash in recent cases. We are definitely going into a place that will need work in our preferred price point. Jenks, commute is a concern, but most of it is walkability. Logan Square isn't exactly a dream commute now on the blue line. But I hate driving, have since I first learned to drive. I haven't seen LaGrange, so I wouldn't be speaking from experience on there, however.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Apr 17, 2013 -> 06:03 PM) Have you looked into Forest Park as an alternative? its a bit cheaper but still close to the target area. My wife is from Oak Park so she is constantly trying to get me to go back to there or RF. We are in the same boat, definitely (fiancee, wife as of next week, is from Oak Park). Oak Park is the end goal because of schools and family. Forest Park is attainable now, and I think they've done a great job revitalizing. Madison features a lot of great restaurants and walkable areas. But the schools are big, but you certainly pay a price for that in OP. I think the main problem is we probably set our eyes on Oak Park earlier than we should have because prices there are interesting right now. And I'm still nervous about pulling the trigger on a comparable neighborhood to Oak Park because I still think medium term we'd be itching to move there. So our conflict now is basically, if we are accelerating our move out of the city in order to own property, is it worth moving to an area 'like' Oak Park when we know we might not feel comfortable committing 8 years to that house. I think FP and Berwyn both offer great value and transport. But I am torn knowing that we aren't going to commit long-term to that area.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 17, 2013 -> 06:00 PM) Yeah, feel free to run with the real estate discussion...i don't think mcm is going to drive much conversation in this forum It's tough, because you feel as though you might pay more down the road if you don't find something decent now...but too many people took that strategy 6-7 years ago and got killed for it. Best thing to do probably is stay where you are unless you really find something you like, at a fair price. Otherwise, you open yourself up to a lot of volatility right now. People out here are starting to go nuts, listing their properties at 2006 prices, trying to get everything they lost back during one little bubble... I've definitely got that impression. There's a number of houses on the market in Portage Park selling for 20-30% over the prices of houses actually selling. I feel for those people, they've been under water for a while and prices are finally growing. But it's still a ways off for a lot of them.

Seems this has turned into a real estate thread. We've been following the market for houses pretty intensely past year. Ultimately, our end point will be Oak Park, but for now, we cannot afford a house there plus the property taxes, and we still would prefer living closer to the city. Recently we've been scouring for neighborhoods where we could find a SFH at our price. This past weekend, after checking out portage park and other neighborhoods, we think we are gonna continue renting and saving what we can. While nice, they are not close enough to the city for me, and I don't think we'll end up staying for more than 4-5 years, and I do not want to deal with price volatility on a timeline that short. This approach makes me a little nervous because in specific neighborhoods, prices have gained healthily. But I don't think either of us want to reach on price prematurely.

QUOTE (Jake @ Apr 17, 2013 -> 03:56 PM) Yeah, that's always the worry...that he'll run players away. It is possible some guys choose not to come because of Thibs, but that's okay. All you have to know is that Thibs is pragmatic -- he obviously believes in defense as a primary, primary, primary concern. However, it doesn't matter if you can't score. Enter Nate Robinson. If he was a stubborn coach, Nate would sit until he grew 4 or 5 inches and started playing better defense. The way Jimmy has turned out is reflecting very well on both GarPax and Thibs as well. If we get something out of Marquis Teague, that's 2/2 for Thibs with young guys riding the bench but still getting better. Unfortunately, I can't see Teague ever being worth much to this team, even if he is pretty damn good. Do you think, if he became a good PG, we'd start putting Derrick at the 2? That would test the limits of Thibs' willingness to sacrifice defense. Do you see a squad with: Teague Rose Jimmy Taj Noah at some point in about 2 years? It seems like the one position we're still looking for longer term answers is 2, because we don't want Derrick or Teague spending that much time there. If we find some way to keep Lu around after current contract, I'd imagine we'd look at keeping Jimmy at 2. We would still have to be on the lookout for a real scorer at that spot and have either mythical scoring 2 guard or Jimmy be the 6th man. Our boy abroad may be coming into the fold around this time, so hopefully that helps our depth. Not sure how well or if he fits into Thibs' system though, hopefully he doesn't need to spend years on the bench to adjust. I also think it would be nice to keep Marco in the fold, if possible. He's a nice complimentary player with a bit of upside. Teague's development will take a lot longer than we are used to. PG is already one of the harder transitions from college to NBA, and Teague was a very raw 19 year old PG. It's going to take some time for him, but it was an interesting pick because you definitely got the feeling he was bulls BPA. He may not pan out, but those are the picks you should make in the 20s.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 17, 2013 -> 02:51 PM) Yeah but now we can say there's zero theoretical basis for the Ryan budget since their 2010 is the only thing he bothers to cite. Good luck with that.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 06:13 PM) The oft-cited Reinhart & Rogoff paper from 2010 on national debt levels and economic growth, which stated that debt levels about 90% GDP dragged on the economy, appears to have several fatal flaws: http://www.nextnewdeal.net/rortybomb/resea...rDQo2L4.twitter While important that someone finally figured out why their model predicted what it did, ultimately austerity has been put in place for reasons other than empirical research.

I still think Popovich should get it. But I think this year dispels all doubt that Thibs is a Doug Colllins burn you out type coach. He pushes players hard, but he's fair, and he never calls a player out to the media if he's not liking their effort. And as you saw with Bellinelli, he will immediately reward with playing time if they start to understand the defense in practice. And especially those big high profile games like vs. miami and ny, with garbage lineups, the teams play incredibly disciplined and get big wins. I think those get him a lot of buy-in from his players, who know the system works if they play within it.

Direction?
QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 08:32 PM) And the pitching staff is, bare minimum, top 10 in the majors with the potential to be top 5. The team is better than this are you are nitpicking a weakness to try and prove a rather weak and hollow point. Which is incredibly hard to do. And to me it's all the more amazing that we could have such mediocre teams with such great pitching year to year. Ultimately, that's a failure.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 04:20 PM) I feel like Mad Men is just set on repeat, especially the Pete/Don storylines. Didn't we see the same type of scenes 2-3 seasons ago? Although the Trudy/Pete scene was pretty epic. I decided I was done after the opener. I am not interested anymore in a dark take of people never change and redemption doesn't exist. I used to be fine with don's cheating, thinking it was part of his need to keep secrets because of his past. But now his past is pretty much settled, and so it's just that don's a sleezebag except this time he's hurting someone who is a good person and treats him well. I don't find that entertaining.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 02:48 PM) Watched Red tails last night, and it was awful. Every character and plot line was a horrible shallow cliche. Just terrible. It felt like they were trying to make the war movie through the lens of a sports movie. I didn't like that.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 02:44 PM) I thought his performance was great, I thought the movie was ok, I thought that some of the elements weren't dealt with in quite enough detail and it was a bit scatterbrained overall, in no small part because they were dealing with just a small part of his career. The best part was seeing how the man was portrayed, but the surrounding plot line didn't stand up to his performance. I agree. If you are going to go hyper focused on a single element of his presidency, it shouldn't have been as unfocused as it was.

Well if we play the playoffs like we did vs. St. Louis I'm less concerned about physical play than I was. Absolute beauty of an assist by Kane last night.

Explosions at end of Boston Marathon
QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 16, 2013 -> 02:51 PM) The Governor now says that were NO unexploded bombs found, just the two that went off. I'm not surprised at all by this. I found those claims to be the most likely to be fudged in the haze.

QUOTE (Harry Chappas @ Apr 15, 2013 -> 09:55 PM) I read this and was not quite sure how to react. So a potential suicide bomber did not blow himself up entirely and now we will try and put him back together again. I hope he is at the end of the triage line. Yes, instead of getting information from him to see if anyone else was involved, we should let him die.
