2012-2013 Official NHL thread
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Mar 28, 2013 -> 02:49 PM) I'm glad the Hawks abstained - the last thing we need is another salary cap mess the moment things are looking up again. Our acquisitions can be the return of Hossa (soon) and Sharp (eventually) to the lineup. I agree to a point. If you win a stanley cup with him, it's worth another cap mess. 2 Stanley cups in 3 years is something you don't pass up.

Loved watching sportscenter and how they have turned it into "are the Heat treated unfairly?" Hinrich's foul was very vanilla, it only looked bad because he's 110 lbs going up against a 280 lb monster.

QUOTE (HeGone33 @ Mar 27, 2013 -> 08:44 PM) I keep hearing mention of this video from practice yesterday of Rose playing one on one and looking dominant. Not sure if I haven't seen the correct video, but in the one I have seen, it made me sick to my stomach watching him take jumper after jumper from the top of the key looking horrid with little explosion at all. I thought the same thing.

I'd be disappointed if they don't decide on case, though I'm not sure what that truly means.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Mar 25, 2013 -> 04:35 PM) Still wouldn't matter. Point is we've seen the best of kobe. There's no higher for him to go. He's no threat (never really was) to Michael. Michael knows this. But Lebron is most definitely a threat. 4 MVPs before age 29? That's too sick. Like dick said, if the heat win this year (they will), it's officially on. I was saying they'd never hit 80-2.

QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Mar 25, 2013 -> 04:01 PM) Mike knows it too. His lame reasoning for choosing Kobe over LeBron ("5 beats 1") was so amatuer. A 10-year old could come up with that. It's way more complex. Imagine LeBron with early 2000's Shaq? lol. 80-2 every year. Naw, Shaq didn't care about regular season.

Wade and Bosh are great, but I still think Lebron would have won a championship last year if he stayed in cleveland. Andy has turned into a damn good player, and who knows who may have found their way there as well. Lebron is just the king of the league right now. He made his choice, his team is great, they are going to win for a long time. There's always a super team in the nba, this is their time.

2012-2013 NBA thread
I don't know why I haven't gotten into the NBA this year. Every story line I was interested in has busted. Lakers are not even entertaining, timberwolves got injure-killed, Philly, man I just can't believe how bad they are. Just not that fun a year to have your best player down with an ACL. I like watching the Nuggets though.

QUOTE (Jake @ Mar 24, 2013 -> 05:09 PM) This implies knowledge that trading Deng was doable -- we very well may not have gotten any offers for him, at least ones worth doing. It seems that GarPax were at least considering this idea. At this point, it seems logical to just stick with this squad as-is until Deng's contract runs out, at which point you'll have Rose-Noah-Taj-Butler-Teague left and a fair amount of salary space. Amnestying Boozer before next season, for instance, doesn't even get you under the salary cap. Joe Johnson and Rudy Gay were traded this year. Anything is possible.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 21, 2013 -> 07:56 PM) No, and I don't see that racial identification actually involves huge shades of grey. Obama is mixed-race, but he self-identifies and is identified by our society as black. UT's stated goal of diversity would be clearly advanced in that case. There's always the possibility of someone who's culturally and ethnically white but, say, 1/32 Hispanic ticking that box because they think it'll give them an edge that they need, but potential fringe issues like this are possible for any demographic group. Either way, he quickly and clearly told them how they get this data (applicants tell us on a form), and their follow-ups didn't actually go anywhere. If they have a problem with the concept of self-identification (and thus the entirety of demographics), they could have pursued that line of questioning without sounding so childishly naive. It's also just something that is allowed to be considered. It may also be unfair to this student that her school may have not had as many extracurricular options as other students, however, those are also allowed to be considered. Also LOL at being forced to pay to apply.

QUOTE (CrimsonWeltall @ Mar 21, 2013 -> 07:51 PM) But isn't the SCOTUS' line of questioning relevant to that issue? If the school doesn't have a good way of determining who is a disadvantaged minority, or racial identification involves huge shades of grey, isn't that a big problem for the policy itself? I don't think so, no.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Mar 21, 2013 -> 05:55 PM) Picking a good shooting motion is important too. I'm really good with Durant and Nash. I've played about a bit more than one season in myPlayer and my guy can score at will in almost every way. Yeah i'm with Allen but it's almost too quick.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Mar 21, 2013 -> 04:34 PM) I linked this similar-but-less-caustic article yesterday: This court seems likely to strike down Affirmative Action and, possibly, any policies that consider race with it as now and forever unconstitutional, and they'll probably gut the VRA, too. What a legacy. That's all fine and well, but it doesn't have this paragraph: "So having failed to work hard enough in high school to get into the University of Texas directly, Fisher was unwilling to do the work to win a transfer slot there. When will white people stop wallowing in their victim status and put some effort into improving themselves, like regular Americans do? It will be a shame if the Supreme Court chooses to reward this kind of dysfunctional identity politics."
