  1. QUOTE (JPN366 @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 04:43 AM) Crazy as he was a mediocre, light hitting back up catcher as a player. I doubt there's any correlation between great hitting coaches and how successful they were as players.
  2. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 05:08 PM) Watching the presser... well, for good or bad, Robin is the anti-Ozzie in front of the cameras. Yes, these will be the most boring post-game press conferences ever.
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 04:58 PM) Intros are starting... Kenny is going answer questions. Thanks
  4. QUOTE (Kenny Hates Prospects @ Oct 11, 2011 -> 05:09 AM) The opposite side of that though is the predictability factor and the risk of becoming a lame duck micromanager. Game observations tell stories far better than stat sheets do because the stat sheets try to eliminate the stories altogether, and if you don't know the game on the field then you really have no place in the dugout running the show anyway. If anything, not to sound like Hawk here or anything, but the role of agents and the amount of money involved makes player managers almost an impossibility these days. The only player I can actually think of off the top of my head who might be able to pull it off would be Tim Wakefield, because his situation as a player is pretty unique to say the least and he's not really anyone's benchmark economically or statistically, and in theory, he could have that auto-renewing manager's contract where he could place himself as the 25th man on the roster and only step in on short notice when the pitching staff really needed the extra help. But attempting to manage the game while in the bullpen warming up still would be pretty unnecessary. Yeah I can't think of anyone who would even be in position to try pulling it off, much less actually pull it off. The only situation where it would be fun would be if you had a perfect storm type situation where you had a long-time hometown player retiring from the game during a miserable non-contending season where you just happened to can the manager and most of his coaching staff. If MB were 37 or something this year, and this was the end, those last 2 games being managed by Buehrle instead of Coop would have been a perfect send off. That's probably the only scenario I could see where a player-manager happens again. I understand all of your points, but I think we are underestimating the delegation that can occur with a player manager. Every individual decision in a game does not particularly need to be made by him, general strategy can be asserted prior to the game and executed by other coaches during the game, much like a football coach. It's not that I necessarily want Konerko to be player manager as I want to see a player manager sometime soon.
  5. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 10, 2011 -> 08:54 PM) A part of me thinks with the explosion of information and technology if it would actually be easier to be a player manager these days instead of harder. You don't need to lean on your staff as much to know if Batter A hits lefties or righties better anymore. It is all at your finger tips. That's exactly how I feel.
  6. What did they do in the 70s and 80s with frank robinson and pete rose, old dudes? There's been like 100+ player managers in the history of this game. They only have separate managers now is for vanity. The white sox should bring it back.

QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 10, 2011 -> 09:28 PM) Recruiters that have spoken to business organizations here at U of I have mentioned that there could be some concerns over people "hiding" their personal life, but most of the younger generation recruiters know this is commonplace now and dont worry about it. But to say that no recruiter would think twice about it would be silly, just because there are some stupid recruiters out there. One thing I learned, is that all that s*** business recruiters told me in college was pretty much the opposite of what to do. I was given TERRIBLE advice consistently.
  8. QUOTE (bigruss22 @ Oct 10, 2011 -> 08:30 PM) If Paulie is in the field, then how does he call for a pitcher to warmup? Or to replace a pitcher? I also think there would be a ton of jealousy/fighting that goes on over Paulie being in that position. From who? He's been there the longest and (pretty much) his whole career. All you need is a bench coach for the other stuff. Need to replace a pitcher? call time out and walk over to the mound. Player managers are still an idea because they have existed. I can't think of a sport, save basketball that could so easily have a player manager.
  9. QUOTE (Rowand44 @ Oct 10, 2011 -> 07:17 PM) Ya, the thought of Konerko being a player/manager just makes me cringe. I think it would be awesome.
  10. QUOTE (fathom @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 07:46 PM) Of course KW would be CRAZY to take this stuff to court. With some of the things that have gone on with Kenny, he needs to just drop this whole thing with Cowley and move on with Ventura. frankly, the lawsuit itself will cost so much money to the sun times which they wouldn't want. It wouldn't even matter if they went thru with it.
  11. Saying they are delaying their phone launch out of respect for jobs seems like convenient cover. My bro works for nokia, he was trying mango and said it's amazing. I'm excited to see this. There's nothing bad that can happen from microsoft actually creating a non crappy product for once.
  12. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 05:49 PM) More excellent arguments to the fact that managers indeed do absolutely nothing, which seems to be the only argument on the side of those who agree with this hire. I just think there should be player managers. Saves you some salary, I see no downside.
  13. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Oct 7, 2011 -> 04:58 PM) It's unfortunate the other half is still here making "bold" decisions hiring gutty guys like Ventura with no experience nor idea how to handle a Major League ballclub. True, but I do think it's pretty valid to assume a more disciplined organization with ozzie gone.
  14. Teddy has written a number of great articles over the years, but I think his average radio presence sours me on him. edit: his "in search of frank thomas" article about 8 years ago was great, at least it was when i was 16.
  15. No offense to all the haters, but you probably wouldn't HAVE had a zune if not for the ipod. Windows is better because apples OSXs pushed it so hard. And, from what it sounds like, Mango will be a hell of a product, but it will be great because microsoft now values design more than they ever did in the 90s power years.

  17. QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 11:49 PM) I don't like that. The mgr should have some say in his decisions and hires. From the sounds of some quotes I thought Robin had pretty much picked his bench coach out. Kenny did say they were going to ask permission to ask for a bench coach that Robin wanted.
  18. Kenny acted like he's been honed in on Robin for a while, Robin basically sounds like he asked him five minutes and robin said "f*** it, sure."
  19. Insight into Robin : "I'm not a big rules guy". "I haven't really talked to Kenny about that yet"
  20. QUOTE (South Side Fireworks Man @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 11:31 PM) He's not coming across too well. Seems like both he and Kenny are stressing that he's going to need a lot of support. Agreed.
  21. Robin sounds as surprised as anyone that he was hired. I hope his heart is really into this.
  22. QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Oct 6, 2011 -> 11:07 PM) Exactly. I love how people are popping up with the tweets from various Chicago newsmen saying how they like the move, when these are the same guys who wouldn't say a negative thing about Ozzie until it was absolutely clear that he wasn't coming back. As I said, I wasn't endorsing anything, I was just posting reactions.
