2011-2012 OFFICIAL NBA LOCKOUT thread
I'd imagine not being able to move it into 7/31/12 will have a lot to do with playing in the individual arenas, who may have booked other events for those times.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 27, 2011 -> 11:18 PM) I think that's quite low. How many hundreds of thousands of times, or maybe millions, have those been used by police over a decade? And look at the alternatives... they may have used batons, or CS/OC, or forced physical restraint, or even a gun, depending on the circumstances. That pool of other toys, combined, would probably have killed more than 50, especially if a gun was used instead at any significant percentage. Keep in mind that tasers have been used in situations that, sometimes, leave only a gun as an alternative. 50 over a six year period, is the conservative estimate. 50 deaths by police against civilians. Actual deaths after tasers have been used were 300+ over that 6 year period. That's really f***ing high. And I don't care about the margins, but the amount of times i've seen tasers come out has been ridiculous. It's a crutch.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 27, 2011 -> 10:16 PM) Police officers are armed with guns, but they don't fire at the first sign of resistance. Which really brings it back to the original point, these "less-lethal" or "less-than-lethal" weapons have, imo, become overly relied on by police forces, and not just for crowd control situations. Drawing out you gun is obviously a big step; pulling out your taser not nearly as much, even though the end result could be the same. My point as well. 50 people died from 2001-2009 from the use of tasers, cited by the DOJ so likely very conservative in #. That's quite high.

U.S. Out of Iraq By the End of the Year
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 27, 2011 -> 07:18 PM) Did that inflict "massive economic damage?" It severely stressed our economy. But that said, did we really secure the oil fields in Iraq?

QUOTE (HickoryHuskers @ Oct 27, 2011 -> 05:46 PM) If the SEC really wants Missouri, then 1) Why didn't they grab them at the same time as A&M? 2) Why is there a holdup in getting them now when they are very openly pursuing the SEC? Anybody else think that the SEC doesn't really want Missouri and is using them to see who else is really interested in heading their way? You realize you can't just say "And with these touches of the sword upon the shoulder, you are now in the SEC!" right?

If the city would like more bars around 35th and Shields I'd encourage them to look into their liquor license regulations and zoning. Both would be much better off.

Who Rongey? Rongey probably loves this deal. I can hear it now: "This bacardi deal alone is not why there is a deficit in Chicago, therefore, argument is null"

2011 TV Thread
I'm in the middle of season 3 and struggling to continue on. 1 of the nice things about season 1 was the tension of actually trying to run and fund their illegal activities. It gave nice depth to them, as you liked them, but they were also giving guns to terrible people and were bad. Now they don't really touch on that, seem to have tons of money despite not appearing to do any work. It's just very melodramatic. It's like what happened to the OC in season 3.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 11:21 PM) Which of course, cannot be done in the NBA, which uses a complete hard-slotting system and includes foreign players. You cannot put more resources into drafting and stop making stupid player signings? Interesting.

QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 10:19 PM) 1. Do you know what the crowd was actually doing before this happened? And thereby be able to make any rational judgment as to the police response? 2. Do you understand what non-lethal means in terms of police tools? It doesn't mean zero chance of death, because frankly, ANYTHING the police do in terms of use of force, including just cuffing someone if they resist, can occasionally result in death. Non-lethal means the percentage chance of death is very low. A gun on the other hand, or a blunt force weapon if used on red zones, is lethal because the chances are much greater. 3. If the protestors were doing something illegal - breaking stuff, burning stuff, throwing stuff, whatever - what tactics would you suggest they use? There are plenty of tools beside rubber bullets. I've failed to see a report that this was anything like rioting. So I suppose if it's a matter of trespassing, death isn't the most reasonable response.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 10:57 PM) I missed that line. Actually, you do see the Royals and Pirates overpaying for people fairly often. Gil Meche comes to mind for the Royals. Jack Wilson and Jason Kendall come to mind for the Pirates. I'd say that signing Tyrus Thomas to a riduclous contract is pretty equivalent to signing any of those guys...and the Royals/Pirates couldn't even say they're trying to keep a guy who helped them make the playoffs. And when they stopped doing that and put more resources into their drafts...voila

QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 11:11 PM) Just out of curiosity, if this World Tour happened and one of the major stars had some crazy injury happen to them(think Shaun Livingston), do you think that they would be subject to having their contracts voided when the NBA resumed? I'm sure they took out insurance.

how many deaths need to happen from these non lethal weapons from police before they stop using them on massive crowds. Unbelievable. Between bart shutting down cell phone service and this, the bay area has some f***ed up police stuff happening.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Oct 26, 2011 -> 08:26 PM) It's not too often you see an out-and-out defense of sweatshops: http://bleedingheartlibertarians.com/2011/.../#disqus_thread It's sort of a hard truth but there's a lot right about it. These countries are catching up. Part of catching up is going thru the same levels of an economy that the first world already went through. So while it seems grotesque to work 16 hours in a hot factory, it's actually a step up from a subsistence living. Many places in India and China and elsewhere are still very poor but measurably better off than 30 years ago. That's not to say all sweatshops should not be criticized. Clearly the ones submitting their workers to dangerous fumes and quick deaths are something we should work toward.- 2011-2012 OFFICIAL NBA LOCKOUT thread
The Bobcats are an atrocious organization. You'll be hard pressed to win anyone over by saying they don't have a chance.- 2011 Cubs Thread
I think Theo is a great hire. But recently his drafts haven't been that great and he's handed out some of the worst contracts in the league. But that's not asked. It's all gushing over Carmine. His 05 draft was one of the best drafts of the decade, for sure, and he can run an organization, but I think he's not top 5 anymore, especially after doing so much with roiders.- 2011-2012 OFFICIAL NBA LOCKOUT thread
It sounded more like from Billy Hunter's interview, that the owners still haven't figured their s*** out yet on revenue sharing, so I doubt they'll be able to get the players to agree to anything. - The Democrat Thread
