I bet part of it specifically here is JR not being really open to reasons to why TLR wouldn't be a great fit. I'm sure he was like "you guys need a manager, I can get you one of the best managers of all time". And then trying to sell him AJ hinch or a bench coach I'ms ure he was just obtuse about the whole thing and they struggled to push back.

I've been one of the main people worried about discord that could be stoked by tlr's clubhouse, as he has sometimes not gotten along with prominent players and publicly. That said - let's not go overboard. A lot of players were fiercely loyal to him. Pujols loved him. McGwire followed him. He didn't fire McGwire from his staff after mcgwire admitted using steroids. He's not quite a buck showalter or even joe girardi hard-ass. He's just had some real clique-y clubhouses where he can play favorites.

I think some of this was St Louis puritanism moreso than Larussa. That said I'd be okay if they asked eloy to go one button up, there are children watching.

To me there's a couple things: 1. The process was bad, owners meddling like this rarely works out. 2. The job of manager has changed a lot. More so than "the analytics" people obssess over, it's been a position that has been more deeply integrated with the front office player development and analytics teams. Tony was a superstar manager that was given players and was allowed to own that entire process. The front office expects that collaboration, but Tony is set-up not to have to give it. He has the owners ear and did him a favor coming back, after all. It just sets up soo much conflict.

I definitely think that's a part, but I also think the other part is the increase of velocity in pitching and talent finally catching up to the mass expansion from the 90s.

Is Sam Fuld going to be that much better prepared in 2 years joining here vs. learning in another org? I'd rather he not get poisoned by the conflict they are setting up here. Good lord, being the analytics coordinator under TLR. He's going to be viewed as a Randy Brown.
