Offseason Targets
I never give a shit about this stuff. If sox have highest offer let him make his choice on whether 1 month out of the year is that important (especially when he's 37.)

Who would you have hired?
not sure there was a single team in the league that followed analytics to a fault more than the pittsburgh pirates. See how your boy Kevin Cash was able to turn Tyler Glasnow from a failure in pitt to an ace by not ignoring his strengths that were apparent by looking at him, and not forcing him to throw two seamers to suppress home runs.

I'd prefer him paired with another guy.

Was hoping that would be the case, yeah I think he's a great fit that has seemed to get more durable as he gets older.

Pro Tony La Russa Hiring Poster Here
To me there's a couple things: 1. The process was bad, owners meddling like this rarely works out. 2. The job of manager has changed a lot. More so than "the analytics" people obssess over, it's been a position that has been more deeply integrated with the front office player development and analytics teams. Tony was a superstar manager that was given players and was allowed to own that entire process. The front office expects that collaboration, but Tony is set-up not to have to give it. He has the owners ear and did him a favor coming back, after all. It just sets up soo much conflict.

This means sox will be active in free agency
I definitely think that's a part, but I also think the other part is the increase of velocity in pitching and talent finally catching up to the mass expansion from the 90s.

Is Sam Fuld going to be that much better prepared in 2 years joining here vs. learning in another org? I'd rather he not get poisoned by the conflict they are setting up here. Good lord, being the analytics coordinator under TLR. He's going to be viewed as a Randy Brown.

Pitching Coach and Bench Coach
I don't give a crap about a grooming opportunity. I just don't want the gains our player dev department has made to get shut out of the coaching of the players.

Although he also discarded prestigious vets that declined and felt they deserved a spot. He plays favorites, so not any vet will do. And unfortunately in the 2000s a lot of older players seemed to be able to keep it going longer. Now there is basically Nelson Cruz and everybody else.

Okay so yeah a manager deals with players. So you just described what I was talking about while acting like you were disagreeing for some reason.

I can’t stress how much I would hate Yadi

Not sure we are good at guessing what things mean. Any negative news is always assumed to be a brilliant PR smokescreen.

Also hiding the us political posts thanks guys for making me work

Tony La Russa named Manager
There are a lot of interesting ( not necessarily in good way) dynamics here but a big one to me is how is LaRussa going to handle having to prove himself for the first time in 35 years? He has been deferred to for years with his success, now he not only doesn’t have that, he has to prove it...at age 76. But, I think we have a great group. If Tony is ready to work, I think the guys will rally anyway.

Lol ”so I’ve had time to think it over. This hire is garbage”

Tony La Russa named Manager
He can actually be pretty funny in post games but yes it is pretty dry and acerbic. He's like ryan from the OC, but older.

Tony La Russa named Manager
The good news is this means I have 40 more years to learn how to be a baseball manager.
-
Tony La Russa named Manager
You have seen him more than me but this didn't seem that different from his late cardinals days where he'd mumble out a few words.

Tony La Russa named Manager
The worst part about that graphic is it looks like Tony is holding up a picture of his younger self for some reason.
