UDFA Tracker - Signing Period has begun
None of the ALC teams have a guy yet. And the BA500 guys who have gone are in the 400-500. Not really missing that much.

Will There Be a 2020 Season?
I don’t se show you came to that conclusion, but the owners will get rolled in arb as it seems pretty clear the March agreement did not have language that explicitly supports the owners position. I think the theory that manfred misrepresented the March agreement to the owners and its ability to force renegotiations and has been trying to fix that mistake since.

2021 MLB Draft Thread
Well I personally don’t want Detroit to be able to clean up in two of the better draft classes of last several years

UDFA Tracker - Signing Period has begun
If I’m a marginal guy do I really want to go to yankees who routinely over sign and have 40 man crunches? I don’t think it’s as straightforward as you think. While you could feasibly be blocked at the MLb in Sox system, they are unlikely to be adding tons of quality prospects every year now, so you may have a longer period to hone your craft in minors before getting cut. And showing off to clubs is the most important part, you can’t look at the MLb roster for a decision.

UDFA dreamin'
I feel for them though. The money angle is pretty straightforward in that it is likely they will sign for more than 20k next year. But the time is not straightforward, and the competition. If your dream is to play affiliate ball, you are staring at a situation where you could take that spot now, or risk that you had a good year next year competing against double the players in an environment where there will likely be even fewer milb teams. Just a really sad situation for kids on the cusp of something really special and they were the ones everyone was willing to sacrifice.

What would you have rather seen from this draft?
to be fair that was a single thread and literally everyone laughed at the person who made it (and every pitcher promptly got tommy john)

COVID-19/Coronavirus thread
Illinois with only a 2.3% positive rate today and under 600 new cases (25k tests). It was a full week of new cases/day never exceeding 800. the Northeast region even as things opened up was still pretty high in % positive, now that's down to 8% (was 15% in early may), and hospitalizations are down 77%. Happy to see such a large testing day. I really hope starting tomorrow we see high tests as those that were at the largest protests hopefully get tested. Next week will be a big week on that front.

Well, what if what they have is not good enough? Ask the cubs how quickly the cupboards go bare. Same with Red Sox. Both had incredible cores and redundancy. Now, they got the ring and that's all that matters. But what if we are just going to be playoff good - the depth will be crucial without elite payroll.

the teams I think had better drafts had something in common: comp picks. Considering we only had 5 and a modestly good position at 11 I think getting two guys the sox may have well rated top 15 or 20 is a pretty good plan. Now it was a deep draft. And it may be one of those ones where in a few years we look at each round saying "we could have had X!" if neither dudes pan out. But would much rather sox go hard for top talent than when we actively wanted to get already cheap talent for even cheaper.

2020 Draft: Day 2 Discussion
The big excitement that Kelley may be different is the ease of his velocity and his command. If it was just a big texas dude throwing 98 and a need to learn how to harnass it, it's more worrisome. We saw with Giolito how good a fastball/changeup approach can get you. So he needs to find some version of a breaking pitch as he develops but he has time.

Well they don’t ever draft them honestly. Gio Gonzalez was a big success and enough to make it a good success rate

2020 Draft: Day 2 Discussion
I know teams limit the high schoolers innings in the minors but why don’t they mimick the college 7 day between starts the first few years?

FS: White Sox select prep RHP Jared Kelley with 47th pick, signed
certainly not the more sure talent you are looking for but it does help that last year we had guys like jose rodriguez do well and some developmental picks that signed out of high school like logan glass and chase krogman. If any differentiate themselves that prevents a huge gap between any reserves (sort of like we see behind shortstop currently).

This is the one where the actually suture it back to the bone?

2020 Draft: Day 2 Discussion
I agree with all of this. It just seemed like people were getting mad at crochet for suddenly my taking a bigger discount so they could have a more fun draft.
-
2020 Draft: Day 2 Discussion
So yeah I’m sure the Sox and crochet talked some numbers so just trying to hardball him after that isn’t something we should encourage.

2020 Draft: Day 2 Discussion
Has Stevie emanuels been drafted yet? This is a nice writeup Emanuels set a Washington freshman record for appearances in 2018, when he made 34 appearances as a frequently used reliever and posted a 4.37 ERA over 45.1 innings. Since his freshman season, Emanuels has taken steps forward each year. He lowered his ERA to 2.35 as a sophomore reliever, before a strong summer in the Cape Cod League (3.68 ERA, 22 innings, 28 strikeouts, six walks) and transitioned into a full-time starting role this spring. He was the talk of Northwest area scouts and crosscheckers after four starts before the 2020 season was canceled, throwing 22.2 innings with a 0.79 ERA, 38 strikeouts and nine walks. Standing 6-foot-5, 210 pounds, Emanuels has a fastball that gets up to 95-96 mph at its best and sits in the 91-93 range. Over the summer the pitch played a bit true at times, and he tinkered with a two-seam variant to try and keep barrels off the pitch, in addition to mixing in his offspeed offerings more frequently. His slider is a potential plus pitch, a high spin-rate breaking ball that can blend into more of a curveball look at times and is anywhere from 77-85 mph. Whatever the breaking ball is called, it has the spin and shape to become an out pitch. Emanuels also throws a changeup, at its best average, though he throws the pitch infrequently at the moment. With a solid history of strike-throwing, most scouts believe Emanuels can handle a starting role, and teams all seem to appreciate the steady progress he’s made over his collegiate career. Even so, a limited starting track record could limit his ceiling in the draft.
