Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer
- McCann inks 1 year, 5.4M deal with Sox
OTOH, I think you can afford to give Collins some time to show off in april and may and then acquire a DH via trade. It will be minimal cost, as seen by multiple trades recently. I know I am someone who thinks this year matters, but you either trade him this offseason or you gotta let him get some PT.- Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer
I have defended bumgarner as someone I expect to be a productive starter but to me that's just a #4 guy. This team needs a top of rotation player, we don't know how good kopech can be. FA isn't a series of gradual steps, to me wheeler is the last guy with potential for long term high-end (3.75 ERA in the AL or lower) production. Others on the lower end will certainly pop up, but may only be 1-year deals and require some luck.- Cole or Strasburg?
I would be more excited by sox beating a competitive field to land Cole than had they landed Machado, I also think it would be a bigger boost to our competitive outlook the next 3 years as pitching is scarcer than we expected internally. edit: well we'll save this for when the sox jump in the ole sweepstakes- Ken Rosenthal, Jon Heyman say White Sox have better roster than Cubs for next five years
Yes but your hypothetical guarantees a World Series so of course you take it. Nothing about having Tatis Jr. guarantees a WS for the padres, great as he is. Winning a world series does rely a lot on luck, which is why teams overpay for any marginal advantage and that's okay! It's much better than being a tigers fan wondering what if they could have just found a freakin bullpen.- Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer
Nor the sliders and change-ups and angles. Especially with Giolito.- Ken Rosenthal, Jon Heyman say White Sox have better roster than Cubs for next five years
You are asking if shields was actually terrible? Or if he was a meaningful contributor to a 2016 world series? Uh...yes that trade would have been worth it. Would you guys rather be the dodgers of the 2010s or the red sox? I'd much rather be the freakin red sox. That used to be a slam dunk answer, now everyone just wants to be a hedge fund GM.- Ken Rosenthal, Jon Heyman say White Sox have better roster than Cubs for next five years
Especially when they won it in a game 7 in extra innings.- Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer
sacrificing the next three years so that we can solve something that may or may not even be a problem in year four.- Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer
Yeah re: your second paragraph. In general when it seems like there is good momentum toward a result then stalls, it always seems like a bad sign.- Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer
It has to pain rosenthal to constantly need to use Jim Bowden's trash articles as reference points in his own.- McCann inks 1 year, 5.4M deal with Sox
Twins but yes ours is top 5 certainly.- Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer
You are right I saw his k/9 shoot you this year but still puts him in top 25- Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer
Yes. I’d probably prefer Hahn move to ryu and go after betances is I constrict myself to white Sox thinking. Id personally prefer they use their budget flexibility and add an absolute fixture like Cole or Rendon.- Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer
I would have absolutely said that’s a trash offseason.- Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer
Agree. Low K, high walk, manages an under four year. That he did it in front of an atrocious infield was kind of impressive though.- Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer
Yes. Thats a lot of money in avg production.- Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer
As much as I want Wheeler I do think the Sox (in addition) could greatly benefit from a sage vet since this will be a super young staff- Sox Non-Tender Yolmer, Frare, Burr, Release Veiera
They probably messed it up because they ripped up his contract in april, his 2019 salary dropped to like 16 mill then had a 20 mill signing bonus applied that made it like 18.6 this year, they may have put the signing bonus on his original base salary in 2019 which is incorrect.- Sox Non-Tender Yolmer, Frare, Burr, Release Veiera

If you are getting outbid in a hot market, and outbid in a cold market, perhaps you need to re-evaluate your fa strategy.- Sox Non-Tender Yolmer, Frare, Burr, Release Veiera
for luxury tax it's prorated throughout the course of the contract.- Sox Non-Tender Yolmer, Frare, Burr, Release Veiera
Aaron Sanchez non-tendered. I can't believe how far that guy fell. Really thought him and daniel norris were going to be pretty good.- Zack Wheeler: To the Phils (5yr 118); Sox had made BIGGER offer
if you keep waiting for the perfect players and contracts for the next 10 years you'll end up with a window for this core of 2 years or less. And for the next three years, Ryu + Castellanos is much more like 32mm plus. Wheeler would be 22 mill even at the high number thrown around. And I would bet that Wheeler is much more productive than Ryu due to starts alone. If wheeler is their guy sox need to land him, and if he starts to touch stras's floor, then you'd hope they step up to stras, not down to a huge risk in Ryu.- Sox Non-Tender Yolmer, Frare, Burr, Release Veiera
So depending on how you categorize Abreus signing bonus as either a 2020 expenditure or a 2019 expenditure, the sox are at 78.6mm or 83.6mm. Or if you do the actual accounting of it...that's what like 80.5 - McCann inks 1 year, 5.4M deal with Sox
