Sox in on Marcell Ozuna? I mean, maybe. Or not.
I also don't think they need 3 pitchers but regardless, no, I don't think they need to add a bench piece nor do I think they need to add a bullpen piece. Also because I'm not a big fan of this pitching crop and prefer they wait a year, I'd be fine with a hodge podge grab bag of miley, wood, wacha, roark, porcello, walker, and go into next year with your new HOF right fielder, get an actual good starter, and have another year of depth to trade from.

Aren't the Sox more likely to be ready in 2021 than 2020?
Um, yes, it is a lot of money to purchase, but it doesn't require much effort to run. The valuations have gone up and up no matter the franchise. The Marlins could sell tomorrow and get more than they received the year before. Frank McCourt used the dodgers as a divorce ATM, ran a great franchise into the ground, was being forced to sell...and got 2 billion back. They surely don't want to have to pay money out of pocket on a year to year basis, but they can do so knowing it's not actually at risk. You want to know why JR is such an annoying owner? Because he came of age as an owner at a time where there was much greater risk that the lights could turn off. There was no influx of tv money and baseball advanced media money coming in. They literally needed to run it like a business to get people in the seats. He still legitimately worries about league health way more than any other owner who can take it for granted that they can cash out at any time.

oh damn you are starting to turn. Funny thing to me is losing out on wheeler makes me less amenable to the betts trade. I thought we'd be able to add a high end starter...now we still have no idea who that can be.

it is actually way more true than it would have been in the seventies.

Yes, football is definitely more straightforward and actually seems to wash owners in operating income. The number of family ownerships seems to indicate that. Probably the fewer games and salary cap help a lot there. But also that I'm guessing the forbes valuations of football franchises are magnitudes lower of what would happen if say, the pittsburgh steelers, ny giants, cowboys, or bears would sell at this point of the cycle.

sports franchises aren't businesses, they are hobbies like collecting art. And sure nobody wants to lose money on them.

unfortunately for LA, Fansided articles are a binding contract so the deal needs to be finalized.

That's fair. I do think the difference is Wheeler would have signed an extension with Mets. With Mookie, I get the feeling he wants to get a claim that he's the best paid player in game. Which is why I stand that they should expect to give an offer of $36 million a year (highest paid per year), and a gross amount that pits him above Harper but below Trout.

I think there is a small grain of truth in that, but I don't buy that Cherington is a guy that would be so ridgid about the return he'd take a lesser guy at his preferred position.

And frankly, aren't they even more likely to contend in 2022? And even then, can we even be sure it's not 2023? And if it's 2023, is it really worth all of this when we'd only have another year of Moncada/Gio? I think we should blow it up.

Padres / rays: Tommy Pham trade
Ideally we'd just have had a time machine and made the original trade from the cardinals (and to be fair that was a sentiment at the time here).

The rays are so good at this no matter their competitive cycle it makes me ache. Getting good players you like, trade them for others.

You could make an accurate list- Cole to the Yankees: 9 years, $324 million.

Woof. I mean yeah that dude deserves to not be a baseball player, but the next best thing is Balt or Detroit where nobody will see him.- Cole to the Yankees: 9 years, $324 million.
The long arc of my baseball fandom has somehow arrived at me appreciating the hell out of how Brian Cashman runs one of the most gifted yet difficult franchises in sports. Red Sox have benefitted from being able to pull foot off the gas more and ended up with a greater two decade run, but he has dealt with this about as well as you can. - Trade Market for Starting Pitchers...
