QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 10:17 PM) Comparing him to Gio is totally different. Gio is rated as one of our top pitching prospects. He is succeding in A ball. Gio hasn't pitched in AA, AAA, or Spring Training. Gio seems to be on the same path that Brandon went through. Next year we might have a discussion like this about Gio you never f'n know, what DBAHO is saying is right on, he got through the system so quickly and impressed the hell out of Ozzie, Ozzie wanted him up with the big league club, he's not ready(not overrated) and he struggled for 60 percent of his starts, the end. Let him work out some kinks in the minors and we'll have ourselves one hell of a pitcher within the next year or two.

QUOTE(fathom @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 10:09 PM) I remember hearing Hawk and Ozzie saying how we had a great 6th starter in McCarthy if someone got hurt. Then, we called him up, and he was clearly not ready. That's a textbook example of being overrated. Or not being ready like you said. Not being ready and being overrated are completely different things.

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 09:44 PM) Like I said, I am not giving up on him. But, he got his chance, in 3 different places and has only been successful when it doesn't count at all, Spring Training. Trade when the value is high. He's had 5 starts in the bigs, 2 very good one's and 3 bad one's. He's shown flashed of how good he can be and he can be very, very good. From a 21 year old pitcher who has his kind of potential and who flew through the system like he did you should expect exactly what we got out of him.

QUOTE(Milkman delivers @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 09:40 PM) Well, you'd always want there to be zero better in baseball. Every single piece counts (which you know, I'm not trying to be a smartass or anything), and I believe that Schmidt would make our rotation better. The best possible scenario, IMO, is to keep Contreras and lose Duque for Contreras. I've been pro schmidt since I saw him pitch a few weeks ago, however giving up Contreras isn't a very good idea and someone please answer my question honestly there may be 1 or better number 4 starters in baseball at this point but to tell you the truth I don't know if I'd take any teams 4th starter over the Count.
-
QUOTE(Big Hurtin @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 09:33 PM) I'll just say this, for all the people who say he's fine and a good number 4 starter, fine. Playoff winning teams do not have "number 4" starters. If he's still in the rotation come October, this team won't win anything. It's all about the ring, beating out Minnesota isn't enough IMO. Name a team in baseball with a better number 4 starter??? You might be able to think of a few, maybe.

QUOTE(Soxnbears01 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 09:13 PM) ewww. the pizza is just so bland. I can get better pizza anywhere near my house, you gotta go w/ the dogs/brats and the park. You won't find a better one anywhere I absolutely love Connie's pizza. You're the first person I've ever heard bash it. You need better taste in pizza, GOSH

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 09:09 PM) And who blew that for him. The offense. When? After he was taken out of the game. You're argument overall is just dumb, I don't really know how to say it any different. The Duke works just as slow if not slower then Contreras, throws a ton of pitches like Jose yet has had tons of run support, so explain that one to me, Einstein. -
My 11.75 meal everytime I go, two pieces of Connie's pizza and a large coke. No wonder I'm so poor

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 09:04 PM) You cant argue against 11 wins.... He could definitely have a few more. -
QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 08:58 PM) Thanks Rowand, now you just gave them another place to start arguing. I was thinking about that when I made this and thought maybe it wasn't such a great idea but just had to get it out there.

Since there are a lot of people in the game thread b****ing about him I'd thought I'd start this thread. Yes, he didn't pitch a good game tonight but he threw strikes. Jose today was getting ahead of hitters for the most part and he just got beat by Detroits hitters. He got hit hard today but he didn't beat himself. You will rarely see Jose give up a lot of runs when he's throwing strikes, this is probably the first game all year when he's pitched bad that the opposition beat him and he didn't beat himself. Basically what I'm trying to say is I'm not worried about this outing but rather kind of encouraged, this is two straight outings where he's had great control, if he throws strikes like he has the past two games he'll be a very good starting pitcher for us the rest of the year. Just wanted to get that out in the open and see how everyone else feels or I should say everyone who hasn't given up on JC yet.

QUOTE(The Ginger Kid @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 08:43 PM) I don't understand how the Tigers don't have a better record this year. They have good pitching and solid hitting and pretty good defense. It makes no sense. They don't get big hits when they need them. Individually their hitters have been up good numbers, as a whole, not so much. -

QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 08:40 PM) Uuuum, no. This is not wrapped up yet. As you can clearly see, it is July 19th. Look at what the Astros did last year after adding Beltran. All I'm going to say is your credibility has really went down after all these Contreras posts and I mean a lot. -
QUOTE(SoxFan1 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 08:15 PM) Right now, I am honestly willing to trade Count, BMac, and Shingo for 1 1/2 seasons of Jason Schmidt....as long as we getr this piece of s*** Contreras out of this f***ing city. :headshake :headshake :headshake

QUOTE(YASNY @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 11:31 AM) Ross Gload is not an everyday 1B for a good ML baseball team. Nobody knows this for sure, all Ross has done in his professional career is hit. He plays a great defensive 1st base and he can run for a first baseman as well. Personally I think Ross would do a fine job as an everday first baseman but I will say I highly doubt that he ever gets a shot.

QUOTE(JimH @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 01:08 PM) Excellent points by many in this thread, I agree with Yas re: the need for a lefthanded rbi guy but the dilemna is valid ... where would you play him? The White Sox already have a very good lefthanded rbi guy in Carl Everett and it's tough enough to get him at bats. That's one reason why Gload isn't here, because Ozzie thinks Dye can play 1B once every two weeks, and that gets Everett's bat in the lineup. Everett is arguably as good a bat as you could get on the market right now, without giving up players from your 25 man roster. To me, the biggest weakness is still a pesky bat off the bench who can fill in at multiple positions and preferably add another dimension. Good call on Carl. If he was playing everday he'd drive in 100 this year imo. It'd be nice to get another left handed producer in the lineup but we don't necessarily need one, the Marlins did win in 03 without one so it's not vital.

QUOTE(upnorthsox @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 03:16 PM) This sure does setup for the Meuller trade. Not necessarily, Graff's going to be there everday 2nd baseman for now because Bellhorn's injured.

QUOTE(S720 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 05:20 AM) Kinda sad to see Shingo go. Here's an excerpt of a Suntimes article regarding the departure of Shingo. Let's see what Iguchi said: "He was a teammate to me, and he was like my older brother,'' Iguchi said through an interpreter. ''And whenever I had a problem, something I didn't know or didn't understand about being new here, Takatsu was always there to help me out. He was like my friend. ''No, there was no talk of this. I would have liked it if me and Shingo could have gotten a championship together. It was more comfortable to be here with Shingo around. It's definitely a certain feeling of lonesomeness not having him here.'' This is what I have been afraid of. I wonder how Iguchi will react to this on the field? He said it won't effect him and I doubt it does. Gooch is just a pro, he did his normal today getting scott over when he needed to. I'm sure Iguchi will miss Shingo a bit in the clubhouse but once he gets onto the field he'll be fine. I'm not worried about Tad at all.

QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 03:46 AM) Those stats are good, but he has struggled a little at home at Citizens a lot more than he's pitched away this season, just a factor to consider if he's going to pitch at the Cell, considering most of our pitchers have much better road ERA's than home ERA's in the past 2 years. But I'm just nit-picking. Not nit-picking those are good points. I honestly just think Wagner is such a shutdown reliever and I'd love to have the guy. Trust me that's no shot at Hermy at all and I have a ton of faith in the guy but Wags is a top 3-5 closer in baseball imo and Dustin could be the setup man which he would have no problem with, you deepen the bullpen and wow that bullpen would definitely be stacked, once again this is all jmo. Hope it happens and then we can discuss it more.
-
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 03:41 AM) The thing is, Wagner hasn't exaclty been lights out as a closer this season, plus he's out of contract at the end of the season, and he's said he could even retire. A lot of question marks to consider if someone's going to trade for him. 2.13 era, 20 for 22 in save opps, he's been pretty dominate and he's just so damn good. I agree with your other points though, there are things to consider but if you can get Billy Wagner you have to do it, he's just to good to pass up imo, if he's available of course.
-
QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 03:36 AM) Is it just me, or would people prefer to trade for a lefty LOOGY or a good setup guy, before giving up a lot more for a closer like Billy Wagner? I'd take Wags. He's just such a dominate closer but I understand what you're sayingl. By the way we don't NEED Billy Wagner though I'd love to have him.
-
QUOTE(greasywheels121 @ Jul 18, 2005 -> 10:11 PM) I don't know why, maybe it's habit, but I still look at the Twins score every night. As do I, it's a nice comfortable lead at this moment but until that magic number hits 0 nothing is done, I want that lead to continue to grow and grow and then grow some more.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Jul 19, 2005 -> 01:56 AM) He sure didn't handle pitching in NY very well. Weaver's a headcase(duh) honestly I'm shocked he never turned out to be a very good pitcher, I know I for sure thought he was going to be a special pitcher, he just didn't have it all together upstairs.
