QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 07:28 PM) You said the trade was an obvious loss from a White Sox perspective. How else can one read that? And how on earth could you possibly know this at this point in time? Do you realize how huge it is to have Jackson in the rotation right now as opposed to Hudson? Do you realize how vulnerable we would be at this particular stage without Peavy and with an unproven starter in our rotation? What if Hudson falters early this year, as young pitchers often do after experiencing some success? And how is it that Hudson's small taste of success with Arizona last year is somehow something that can be relied upon, whereas Jackson, who has posted an ERA around 3.5 in a White Sox uniform still needs to show us more? I can accept that some people would rather have saved the money and had the 5 extra years of service time out of Hudson. But no one can say right now that either team has won or lost the trade, because the results on the field are not yet complete. What if Jackson anchors our rotation and leads us to a division title? An ALCS win? A World Series win? How the hell do you quantify the final result of the trade before the results have even played out yet? Overall, it's going to be a loss, yes. And for the 90th time, I haven't anointed Hudson anything and neither has anyone else around here. Edwin and Huddy both have to show more, Jackson has had an up and down career and well Hudson hasn't proven anything in the majors yet. Here's what we know: Jackson has the higher ceiling but Hudson thus far has been a tad better since the trade and the Dbacks get 5 years of a very inexpensive pitcher. At best, Edwin turns into an ace this season and we lose him next year. Now, once again, if Edwin has turned the corner(and I DO believe he has) and we can somehow manage to re-sign him then that changes pretty much everything. But at this point, it's definitely a net gain for the Diamondbacks.

And we haven't clinched the 1 seed yet, I misread the tiebreaker rules last night, oops. Magic number only 1 though.

This team is scary good.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 05:53 PM) Eh. You are never going to get a perfect roster 1 through 25. There is always going to be someone. Oh absolutely. That's kind of my point though, when looking at the roster, the only guys I really don't like, hopefully(Peavy's health being the obvious factor here) shouldn't have that much of an effect on where this team ends up this year. -
QUOTE (elrockinMT @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 05:50 PM) Sorry, but I don't. This is an overeaction to one bad game/day Not even close. AJ was bad at the plate last year, he's 34 with a ton of wear and tear on him from catching more than most catchers do(sounds funny but you know what I mean), I fully expect him to be the weak link of this offense and it has nothing to do with the 6 games so far. QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 06:16 PM) Yup. It's pretty clear that Hudson has been anointed Jesus Christ status by some around here because he managed 11 solid starts in the NL with a .241 BABIP. And some of you guys read what the hell you want to read while completely missing the point.

QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 03:30 PM) Andruw Jones homered off of Duensing and doubled off of Liriano. He did similar things last year too. Would have been nice to have him back this year while still bringing in Milledge on the MLC. Then Andruw is on the team and Milledge is in Charlotte to begin the year. That would have created an entirely different problem later on, but oh well. Ha, I watched Jones double today and this immediately came to my mind as well. He definitely would have been the perfect 4th outfielder but I guess you can't get everything you want.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 03:23 PM) No thats exactly the point. Post 2005 is the most glorious time in White Sox history. They are spending money, trying to win. Yet there are fans out there complaining constantly about the management, the owner and the team. Well around here at least, there isn't much complaining about the owner. Since 05, we've spent a ton of money and haven't had a ton of results and people have gotten on Kenny and Ozzie because of it(some deserved, some not imo), if your gm and manager have a lot of money to work with than your fan base is going to expect big results from the team and if they don't get them, they'll start looking at the front office. -
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 03:14 PM) I'm glad the 11 starts Daniel Hudson had in the National League last year with a .241 BABIP convinced you he's the second coming of Christ. Ay, what the hell is with people twisting every god damn thing I say today? So far Huddy has been better than Edwin since the trade. Do I think that will continue? I have no f***in clue. What I do know, is that the best case scenario here is that Edwin becomes an ace this season and we lose him next year while Hudson is in Arizona for quite some time and on the cheap. Now, if Edwin manages to pitch well and we can re-sign him for a couple of years I might have to look at the trade in a different light but as for now, it's a loss for the Sox. QUOTE (witesoxfan @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 03:14 PM) I absolutely agree, but I tend to struggle to look at the Sox in the same light if they had Hudson in the rotation compared to Jackson. Jackson could end up being worth 2 more wins overall than Hudson, and that could be what separates the Sox from winning the division and finishing in second. And this wouldn't shock me. As I said before the season, I can see Edwin becoming our ace this season or being a bottom of the rotation starter. Today was about as good of a start as there has been in the majors this season but 2 games certainly isn't going to convince me that he's an ace yet. I hope he's figured it out(and I'm leaning towards thinking that he has) and if he has, than yes he's going to make a big difference in not only helping win the division hopefully but making some noise in October but like I said, I need to see some consistency from him.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 03:10 PM) My guess is that the Sox have won more games and had more playoff appearances between 2005-2011 than any other 6 year stretch in Sox history. What do these numbers mean: 1983, 1993, 2000 Exactly. To play devils advocate, I'd also be willing to bet that we've spent more money in that time frame than any other stretch in Sox history. Makes a big difference. -

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 03:08 PM) Im always positive until they are officially eliminated. I'm not if I don't believe in the team but there's not much to dislike about this roster overall besides Humber(hopefully he's not here for long) and Tony Pena. -
QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 03:05 PM) Jackson was godlike. But I could shutdown this Tampa offense. Let's not get crazy. Tb's offense sucks but all you had to do was watch this game to realize he would have shutdown pretty much any offense around today. Not saying he's going to do it consistently but today, no one would have stood a chance.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 03:03 PM) There were alot of people here that didn't like the Hudson/Jackson trade, especially because Hud was cheap and EJ's big contract but I loved that trade...EJax has Ace stuff and Hudson, well, doesn't IMO... EJax Not to be a downer but that trade is still quite the loss for us.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 03:00 PM) True. I'm such a positive thinker when it comes to the Sox. We have an awesome roster, I don't understand all the freaking out so early in the season. I absolutely love our roster. -
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 03:55 PM) Against say a David Price? Yes. I don't really understand why Castro wasn't out there today, especially since AJ wound up in yesterday's game as well. Castro wont play back to back days this season unless AJ is hurt.
-
QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 03:53 PM) He's a 34 year old catcher. It's to be expected. He'll be hitting 8th or 9th soon, and I'd still rather have him in there than Flowers or the handful of crap free agents that were available this offseason. I agree with this and I'm sure Milkman does as well. I was happy to bring AJ back because he's still a legit catcher who can handle a pitching staff quite well but there's no doubt in my mind that he's going to be the major weak link in the offense this season.
-
QUOTE (Milkman delivers @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 03:48 PM) AJ did pretty much everything he could to lose this game. He's going to be, by far, the weakest link in the lineup this year. I expect everyone else to have a good year offensively, but he'll be the guy we'll be wishing weren't up in a big situation. This I completely agree with.
-
Edwin throws strikes and it's just lights out. He was getting his slider and split over today and Tampa just had no chance. Not to mention, the defense was very solid today and we had to manufacture some runs which we did. Like I said in my first post, this game was just a thing of beauty.

QUOTE (mcgrad70 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 03:41 PM) You would have if the clueless manager learned to just stay out of the way when his starters are pitching as well as Jackson. but as someone mentioned a few days ago he loves to inject strategy in order to put his imprint into every game. Sarcasm I hope? -

QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 10:51 AM) After 2 games we are going to make that call that Milledge is "really f***ing bad out there", and say the 2nd worst fielder in all the majors last year (Quentin), could actually be better out there? Give me a break. I saw enough of Milledge in spring training to know he is better than the 2 games he has played out there. He did the same thing in spring training, he just can't judge a fly ball to save his life. He either takes a step the wrong way or freezes on everything that's hit out there, yes, he's really f***in bad in the of. And I never said Quentin was better than anyone but so far this season he's been just fine out there. It could be the combination of him being healthy(keeping fingers crossed) and getting used to playing rf again or it could just be the fact that it's only been 5 games but so far he's made every play he's had to and he looks good in doing so.
-
QUOTE (JoeCoolMan24 @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 11:41 AM) From what I've seen, he dropped a ball while running to the wall (not the easiest of catches, but should have been made), and then he broke in on a ball that ended up going over his mitt to the wall. So by my count, he made 2 mistakes, neither of which were as bad as Teahen's pop fly drop yesterday. Basically, he is still probably better than Quentin in the OF. He's literally gotten a bad jump on every ball that has been hit to him in the of so far, he's really f***in bad out there. On a side note, besides the fact that Q isn't going to throw anyone out from rf, he's actually be solid out there so far.

QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Apr 7, 2011 -> 11:36 AM) I haven't had a change to watch any of the games this year, but from what i've read he hasn't exactly looked sharp in the field. Anyone have any specifics to share? He sucks in the field, period. He's going to hit though, I'm pretty confident in that, he has a nice approach at the plate.
