  1. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 10:59 AM) I thought both Garcia and Vazquez would be leaving. My impression of what Kenny is trying to do is trade for two bullpen arms. If something happens, it'll be for one or the other..not both.
  2. QUOTE(nitetrain8601 @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 10:55 AM) The real key to this is who would be our 5th starter? Brandon McCarthy.
  3. QUOTE(Reddy @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 10:50 AM) rowands point is why does it matter? does it really bother you that much? I never understood why people care what idiot sportswriters think. It has absolutley nothing to do with what happens on the field so what's the point of even paying attention? Anywho, I'm kind of surprised that people who care about the media so much are even Sox fans to begin with.
  4. QUOTE(redandwhite @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 10:46 AM) Well then he's going to go into the playoffs with a battered Pedro Martinez, an old Tom Glavine, and barely anyone else behind him. It's not like the Mets are in a position of power here. The White Sox are. You saw what the Reds did yesterday to acquire needs, the Mets and Omar Minaya certainly will do the same. I'm sure Kenny will try to get Lastings if at all possible but it's not possible. It's been said numerous times that Milledge isn't going anywhere and he especially isn't going to be traded for a pitcher who has been very average this season.
  5. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 10:43 AM) I agree. Getting a 5th SP like Tony Armas Jr would allow the sox to keep Bmac right in the bullpen until 2007 as well. Why mess with Bmac if getting Armas wouldn't cost that much [probably expendable guys like Haeger, Phillips]? Bmac>>>>>>>>>>>>Armas. Armas would get rocked here, no thanks.
  6. QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 10:42 AM) Omar Minaya wouldn't do that trade. Correct.
  7. QUOTE(YASNY @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 10:38 AM) I hope everybody learns to hate the White Sox as much as they hate the Yankees. ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
  8. This Garcia/Vaz to the Mets definitely seems to have some validity to it.
  9. Also, remember that one of the big reasons Kenny pulled the trigger for Javy is the fact that he was signed passed 06 and at the time we only had 3 starters including Mac signed for 07. With JC and Garland signing extensions it makes it much easier for Kenny to pull a trade with Javy and that might answer your question about why Kenny would go after Javy so hard and then trade him just a half a season later, iamshack.
  10. QUOTE(FlaCWS @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 07:26 AM) Sorry about that. I should've looked there first... although the gist of my post is that the Sox are the top two sports stories in the NY media. No problem at all since the Count story is in there anyways. Just letting you know if you want to read other people's opinions about all of this.
  11. QUOTE(FlaCWS @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 06:55 AM) Top story is Mets talking to Sox about Vazquez or Garcia (please let it be Javy) and second story is about the Yanks' letting Contreras get away: http://www.nydailynews.com/sports/index.html Incidentally, this is not a second guess, but I was concerned during the offseason about the relievers we let go (Marte, Vizcaino) and now I'm not surprised that we're looking to trade a starter because we need relievers. Personally I'd hate to see Garcia go. And although I'd say Javy has been a mild disappointment, there is no way in HELL I'd trade him for Tom Gordon (Philly is another possible trade partner mentioned in the article). There is a link to the Javy rumors already in trade winds but I'll keep this in here because of the Contreras article. As far as the Vaz rumors, it's interesting that they put that Philly would trade Flash here for Javy(obviously I'd like a bit more) but Gordon definitely is a stud and would take our pen from being solid to absolutely awesome. Also, in one move you upgrade the pen and the rotation imo because I do believe Bmac would be our 3rd best starter right now.
  12. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 06:16 AM) If the sox are willing to trade Javy or Freddy for top notch bullpen help, they probably will be able to get the best deal possible, whoever the trade partner is. I just don't see Houston as a great trading partner for one of our sp's. Their rotation is just very solid 1-5 and I don't think they're going to use some of their better trading chips to add another starter when they have much bigger problems. Like I said though, I could be wrong.
  13. We'll probably get a good idea of how next year is going to shape up when the trade deadline passes or at least a bit of a better idea than we have right now.
  14. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 06:07 AM) If these reports are true [which they probably are, as it's easy to confirm publicly the sox are calling clubs and saying what players are available], the sox can shop for the best deal. Either Javy or Freddy would be the best available SP this yr. for any team that needs help in the rotation I agree. I just don't see Houston trying to upgrade their rotation though. They still need more offense and if they're going to trade someone with good value like a Burke or a Qualls then I think it would be for some more offense. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 06:11 AM) If these reports are true [which they probably are, as it's easy to confirm publicly the sox are calling clubs and saying what players are available], the sox can shop for the best deal. Either Javy or Freddy would be the best available SP this yr. for any team that needs help in the rotation But Pettite and the other 2 SP's besides Oswalt and Clemens all have ERA's over 5.00. Better SP helps the offense. And strong pitching is Houston's M.O. With Clemens probably done after this yr, they'd also have Vazquez for two more yrs after this yr. Bucholz has also started to pitch very, very well as of late and at least to me he is a pretty impressive pitcher. Like I said, I just don't see them trading for starting pitching but obviously I could be wrong.
  15. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 06:04 AM) Another fit for Rob Machowiak, San Diego. Vinny Castilla currently has a .582 OPS and his would be replacement Mark Bellhorn only has a .701 OPS with a .199 BA. The price? How bout a reliever like Scott Cassidy? Just got demoted to AAA despite having a 2.79 ERA with a 42/17 K/BB ratio. This is only his 3rd full season in the majors as well which helps arbitration / contract wise.
  16. QUOTE(beck72 @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 06:02 AM) Which makes a Houston deal for Burke and Qualls more sensible True, but Houston doesn't need starting pitching help the way the Mets do.
  17. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 05:58 AM) Ok so the N.Y Daily News is onto it; So that would be Sanchez and / or Heilman I am assuming (like I said earlier). If something like that happens, Kenny stole my idea. Trading for top notch relief help and putting McCarthy into the rotation. See, this gm stuff ain't that hard.
  18. QUOTE(DBAH0 @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 05:02 AM) Could be interesting for him down there. The Padres are making some changes with their bullpen with Cassidy (go after him KW) demoted to AAA despite having an ERA of around 2.82 IIRC. uh oh, dbaho is caught up on a player.
  19. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Jul 14, 2006 -> 12:44 AM) Someone, anyone, tell me what to look forward to? October.
  20. QUOTE(Jeckle2000 @ Jul 13, 2006 -> 06:31 PM) This might not be too bad of a deal if it were Vazquez for Rowand straight up... I mean yes AROW is struggling but we all know he is capable of getting hot... and lets face is Vazquez has hardly any value because of that awful contract he has... If we can get AROW, dump Vazquez, and not have to pay any of his contract then I take that deal in a second. However we'd have to make a seperate trade for bullpen help... and no deal on Mack...
  21. QUOTE(chitownsportsfan @ Jul 13, 2006 -> 05:59 PM) Wow, Cashman is desperate. Ponson is going to get destroyed in the AL. Ya think?
  22. QUOTE(Kalapse @ Jul 13, 2006 -> 05:58 PM) Me likey, I've always had a soft spot for Chris Burke. The guy is only 26 I believe and plays all 3 outfield positions plus middle infield. He'd be incredibly valuable off the bench as a 4th OF and right handed pinch hitter which is something we don't have. I win.
