QUOTE(knightni @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 12:19 PM) I was "bringing a little reality back to the league".

QUOTE(southsider2k5 @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 12:22 PM) So in essense what you are saying is that it is only wrong if something bad happens? Because the kid wasn't allergic and didn't go into anaphilatic shock and die, that this prank wasn't a big deal? There is a reason something like this is illegal. Just because something bad didn't happen, doesn't mean it wasn't incredibly stupid, and the kid shouldn't be punished. He was old enough to know better, and deserves to be punished as such. 3 rules I live by 1.Never get into a land war in asia 2.Never bet with a sicilian when death is on the line 3.Dont argue with SS2k5

QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 12:20 PM) You know, there is one thing about having kids that is overlooked when comments like yours are made. I want to interject that I'm not trying to be confrontational here, just want to make a point. Most people who have kids are young and still have a lot of learning to do when it comes to setting priorities and realizing what is important and what isn't. Life and experience teaches these things to those that are smart enough to learn from them. Kids do not come with instruction manuals. It takes time to learn how to become a good parent. Some never do learn, or learn much too late. Fair enough. I agree. But you have to admit in many cases there is alot less parent interaction than in the past.

QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 12:13 PM) And this kid got caught and has to go through the consequences. Bad luck on his part, I guess. We've all done some stupid stuff. Sometimes we get caught, sometimes we don't. Doesn't make what he did more right or more wrong. Even when you do stupid s***, you know what you're doing is wrong, even at that age. That's why I don't feel sorry for him. Totally. The kid will think twice next time when he wants to pull a prank. But at the same time, I still think parents get a little too carried away with legal action etc when something like this happens. They should spend more time with their kids and less with their lawyers.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 12:07 PM) That is exactly what I meant when I said you don't put prescription drugs in the hands of kids for the purpose of 'harmlees pranks'. Thanks for reinforcing my point. Oh absolutley. I agree with you 100%. Back when I was that age, I think we would have use gum or dirt or something of that matter. I believe parents these days want their kids to be extra safe, but do not take the time to actually raise their kids and make sure the kids can be safe themselves. Coming from a psych backround, I believe alot of the problems in kids today is due to nurturing and parenting. IMO

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 11:58 AM) That would be nice, however that outfield would lack power and developing that many in house outfielders so close together will be tough. To do that this team will have to get more than normal power from the infield and very strong pitching. Realistically at least one of those 3 will fail and there is a shot that one of those 3 will be traded. Well, if Anderson and Sweeney can amount to 20 hr's each. That would suffice. Konerko and Thome will still be here under contract, either joe or Fields can both produce a decent amount of power as well. Plus the contracts would be small enough to give us flexibility to keep our pitching staff intact when need be. Buehrle is going to command a large sum of cash when its his turn.
-
QUOTE(SleepyWhiteSox @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 11:44 AM) Exactly. Odds are it would not have ended bad, but you never know...you can pull better, funnier pranks without using drugs. Seems like a needless risk to me. Thats because you arent a kid. Think of the dumbass s*** you did as a kid without knowing the outcome or without thinking at all. Kids will be kids afterall.

QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 11:54 AM) He qualified his statement with this.... I read that, but I dont even think Owens projects to be a CF'er or nearly as good in CF as Anderson defensively. I see Owens in LF, Anderson in CF and Sweeney in RF, am i wrong?
-
QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 11:48 AM) I can see the logic here. Good post. I dont know if I do. Owens is a butcher in the field from what I have seen. There is no reason to believe he will ever be as good defensively as Brian Anderson.

QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 11:19 AM) They usually dont bring in special hitting coaches unless its for a specific reason. If Anderson frustrates the sox they may lean on someone to give him a different view, but I doubt if they will bring in Hrniak for this. Im really not too worried.
-
QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 11:15 AM) Walt Hrniak helped him with the leg kick and timing. He was brought in late last year to work specifically with Uribe and it seemed to work out. I believe Anderson has the same resources, does he not?

QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 11:01 AM) It's about kids being mean to each other, and some kids not being able to deal with it. Kids can be vicious. We had a high school shooting not 10 miles from where I work, at the time my boys were in high school. It kinda hit close to home. Ya know? Yes, as well it should. Of course the parents of the children are at blame as well. You should be in touch with your kids to know if something is bothering them to the point where they are thinking about shooting other kids. Also, where did these kids get the guns? Adults pick on other adults in the workplace, on this board, on the street. Its something they are going to have to deal with through their childhood, in HS, in college, in life. Its the way of human beings to establish dominance in a social setting. We all went through it, and none of us shot and anyone, or got shot at. I think that people are overreacting at a few isolated incidents. I feel for parents who have to worry about crazy kids and their neglegent parents however, and this is not an attack in any way.

QUOTE(Dick Allen @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 10:53 AM) If it was likely that he would put up those types of numbers, Joe would be playing CF for the White Sox. If he could hit .260-.275 with 30 homers he would have a spot on any major league team. I dont think joe would ever play CF first and foremost. Lets say Joe hits 240 with mid 20 bombs. Then I think he would still have good trade value.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 11:05 AM) Only problem I see is...the person who has to teach him to stop doing that is Greg Walker...and I lost a ton of confidence in his ability to teach that last year, when we saw batter after batter after batter have exactly that same problem on the big league squad. Well, who was responsible for Uribe's improvement and his timing mechanism?

QUOTE(YASNY @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 10:02 AM) Kids picking on kids. That only causes things like Columbine. Or the billions of other cases where nothing like that happened. I wonder if it was the kids getting picked on? For all the millions of kids that are picked on every year, for the past 100 years, only a couple of cases happen like this? I guess the people who shoot up their office after getting fired should make a case for the elimination of layoffs, or the people who kill their exes after getting dumped should make a case for never having break ups? Outliers.

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 10:35 AM) And you have to remember that even if Borchard makes the team, he's the fifth outfielder behind Mackowiak now that we have both Cintron and Ozuna to play the infield. Borchard would barely get any playing time unless an injury occurred. Also, neither probably has much trade value but I'm sure that Borchard must have more than Gload. You'd have to think that a team that has maybe a thinner OF would take a flyer on Borchard. Washington, for example, has some injuries and some player disputes. Why not give Borchard a chance to play everyday. If he could hit around 260-275 with 30 bombs, he would be worth it IMO.

I think it would be better if we used more minor league and college players. At least then we would be trotting some young stud pitcher, looking to break the major league ranks, throwing his best stuff, instead of seeing f***ing Al Leiter throw gopherballs.

QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 10:24 AM) How exactly can they expect a pitcher to be ready for opening day when he doesn't face live batting until like a week and a half before the season starts? But its SIMULATED

QUOTE(SSH2005 @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 10:28 AM) Kalapse is a dirty tease. I know it. Baiting my agression is not a nice game.
-
s***, at this point, im split. Gload is worthless in the field, and shouldnt ever get a chance to play there. Which renders him almost worthless to the team unless both Thome and Konerko get a day off, or if one of them gets a day off and the other DH's. Borchard could be more valuable to at least play every once in awhile and have some success in the field. However, I feel that trading Joe might be the most beneficial course of action for him personally. Im torn between wanting him to succeed and what is best for the team.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 09:35 AM) I think Josh Fields should be our starting thirdbaseman this year. Joe Crede has sucked balls all spring and Josh Fields has been great, what ever happened to a player earning his spot during the spring? Crede should not get a free pass, it's pretty obvious that he needs some work in AAA still because his back is still bothering him. Josh Fields has 3 HRs off minor league pitching in Tucson that should be worth a starting job in the bigs. It sure wouldn't hurt anything. God I hope you meant to put this is green. Fields wont be our starter until Joe Crede is gone. Thats it.

QUOTE(Kalapse @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 10:24 AM) Hey, Ryan may have hit 3 HRs this spring against sub par minor league pitching but that's still a huge improvement for him after 1 HR all of last year in AA. Well, 2 ST's ago he showed the same hitting talent. Then his wrists and his swing became messed up. They said he had been tinkering with his swing, making it more mechanical, which robbed alot of his power potential. Looks to me he has gone back to just swinging naturally. He still needs more AA and AAA time though, I hope everyone knows that.

Dowd changed locker rooms, and then promptly got an assist.

QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Mar 10, 2006 -> 09:58 AM) Rowand was a 2nd round pick out of a very prestigious baseball school (Fullerton). Those two aren't all that different. Rowand produced at almost ever level as well and tools wise they are similar players. Good arm strength, good range, questionable offensive abilities. Rowand always hit in the minors just as Anderson has. The issue to me has long been the swings weren't the greatest and they had holes. I loved Rowand and will still be rooting for him, but he's gone. Anderson is a very similar player who could turn into a similar defensive player (with hard work) and possibly a better offensive player. Rowand did have a much more compact swing, especially when he would have his hot streaks (which he never had last year). I actually think last year will be one of Rowand's worse offensive seasons of his career as a starter. Obviously Anderson won't be the reason we win or lose the division. But if he's hitting .188 a month and a half into the season, this team needs to go somewhere else. I understand where you are coming from in saying A-row was somewhat a pedigree. But seriously he was a projected as only a reserve OF'er in the majors. He only started in CF because we had nobody else. s***, even Crazy Carl had some starts in CF that year. Anderson has been projected as the future starting CF'er his whole career. I would say he is a much more heralded player, with much more talent on both sides of the ball. Granted A-row developed into a great defensive CF'er through hard work and disregard for his body, but he does take many short cuts in his fielding to compensate for his lack of true talent IMO. Also, once the league figured out his weakness on the offensive side of the ball, we saw not only his average drop, but also his power numbers. Anderson IMO, is a much better player based on potential alone. I do not see him hitting under the mendoza line if given proper time this year.
