QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 05:06 PM) That was fast! Enjoy them! Yeah, they had already fitted me so I just called and said order the damn things. We get equipment at cost at the club so it was about the same as a used set. Pretty stoked to head out and play tomorrow to see if I need to tweak the grips etc yet before I really start playing.

Picking up my custom blue dot i25's tomorrow. Pretty stoked.

QUOTE (gatnom @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 02:04 PM) Does anybody here have any advice for buying a new set of clubs? Specific clubs to get or avoid? A good place to get them? I just got back into golf this summer, and the only clubs I have are the ones my parents bought for me when I was about 12. Dont buy forged irons. I would go into a shop like Shack said and figure out if you need custom fit clubs. If you are standard I would check 2nd swing and ebay for used cavity-back game improvement irons. I prefer Ping, so any G series would do you just fine. I personally hate Callaway clubs, but its all a matter of preference. Go into the local golf galaxy or whereever and just hit every demo driver they have and figure out which one feels best in your hands and through the swing. Then price that one out as used as well. Drivers drop in value from month to month so you can get a real good one for under $100. Wedges are the most important to me so get another wedge in addition to your standard Sand and Pitching. That should set you up for the next few years until you have to upgrade.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 11, 2014 -> 12:24 PM) Are your irons forged or cast? If they are forged, you may be able to get the lie angle bent a few degrees...Are you having the same problem with both sets of your irons (I remember you saying you had a set of pings fitted when you joined your club?). I have a lot of problems with hitting the ground first as well. Not really sure if it's actually the toe hitting first or the heel (my guess), or neither. I had my wife take some video of my swing and uploaded it into a program i downloaded called V1 golf. You can watch your swing frame by frame and draw all the lines and what not to see what movement is occurring throughout your swing...it's really cool. I've found that I have a bit of a forward sway going on when I transition from my backswing to my downswing, and I think it's the source of me hitting behind the ball with my irons. So the last few rounds, I've been focusing on taking the club back more slowly, which I think is allowing for a smoother/softer transition to the downswing, which is allowing me to make more consistent contact with the ball. Thursday I have an appointment for a trackman session. I'll hit all my clubs outside on the range and they should be able to give me data outputs for all sorts of things...swing speed, ball speed, ball spin, launch angle, carry distance, etc. From there, he can tell me where I need to tweak my swing to get the desired ball flight/spin that I want, as well as help me determine the optimal club fitting (shafts/loft/lie angle). Might not be a bad idea for you to do, Rock. Never pulled the trigger and stuck with my old G10's thinking I could augment my driver and keep playing, but now I'm in the fairway with my drives and blocking and at times shanking my irons to the right. My divots have gotten thinner and my fitted irons were more upright than my current ones. Since mine now are kind of gave improvement sticks and they launch ultra high my pro recommended I go with the fitted i25's at least to see if my launch angle and direction improve a bit.

Investigating my yips with my irons today, I am fairly convinced its going to come down to finally pulling the trigger on better fitting clubs. I keep digging the toe and its killing me.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 01:20 PM) I have friends who do nothing but send massive walls of text in text messages with using Google's voice recognition. It works fine most of of the time. The only complaint I have is that Google Now is kind of broken (it won't really listen for your commands for some reason) when you have your phone hooked up to a bluetooth sound system. And they do this in public? Yikes.

Abbatacola and Rozner both criticize Ventura

Is Ventura the worst manager in the history of MLB?

QUOTE (sin city sox fan @ Aug 10, 2014 -> 06:06 PM) Today's loss has to be at least the 20th this season that RV has cost us. Incompetence this bad should not be tolerated at McDonalds....yet alone on a major league baseball team (excluding the cubs) Sox are in first place without Robin. Let that sink in. -

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 10, 2014 -> 07:29 AM) How can you tell it was on purpose? I finally brought myself to watch the video and can't tell if there is intent or not. The kid is walking in the middle of a car race. WTF. Gunning his engine and fish tailing into the guy suggests intent. -

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 10:23 AM) Yeah, HIPPA disclosure is why you can be reasonably sure with respect to their security. Any security can be beaten given enough time and resources, but if you put up enough deterrents people will look for easier targets. Time is the issue, which is why you make access very short lived.
-
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 10:11 AM) Well, two things here. Your medical records at your doctor's office aren't going to have nearly the amount of data that some of these apps and devices track. Your doctor measures your blood pressure once or twice a year, not continuously. The other is that many of these devices and apps themselves have very poor security built into them, whereas you can be reasonably sure that electronic medical records are kept on a pretty secure system. Given enough time and resources, all security systems can be beaten, but my doctor isn't constantly spamming out medical information in clear text like some of these devices/apps are. edit: from that symantec report: lol why Due to HIPPA many of the documents stored onsite arent accessible to the internet anyway. If they are, its behind several proxies that would be very hard to "hack." But it also depends if you think your medical records are more important than something like your Drivers License number, which is much easier to get.
-
QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 09:57 AM) I mean basically all data is going to be stored electronically these days...if someone really wants my info, they will hack into my doctor's servers just the same, won't they? Your doctor probably keeps most of your information on paper. And it's not what is being stored electronically from the traditional sense, there is information flying everywhere to destinations you arent even aware of. Every time you take a FB quiz your personal info is being sent to over 20 different destinations including overseas. The exponential growth of your data when it leaves your hands from things like FaceBook is insane. The more you integrate personal info with those types of sites the more of an open book your life is becoming.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 09:51 AM) yeah, about all of those devices and apps that track various health-related things... http://www.npr.org/blogs/alltechconsidered...firms-are-on-it As someone who is in technology and security, I try to share the least amount of info possible on public internet. People are going to regret putting tons of stuff out there some day. The amount of data collected about you by third parties is shocking.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 09:40 AM) You know full well Apple is already developing this...Apple has been hiring all kinds of medical experts, and even an executive from a fashion house as well as an exec from Tag Heuer. They're creating a watch that will track all sorts of health-related data, as well as doing all these other things a "smart watch" would do. And most of that data will be sent to a third party. I cant wait to see the auto FB posts about peoples blood pressure.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 09:27 AM) Most of these features are what I call show & tell features, and are limited/gimped at best. You'd need near perfect conditions for voice, and/or they require you to pull out your phone (which they already require you to carry) and use it anyway because the screen sizes are simply too small to do much of anything with. And from the looks of some of these, they're already reaching ridiculous "clock" like sizes where you're going to look like a complete idiot if you wear one. It's just not enough of an inconvenience to pull out your phone in the first place. What they COULD do, however, is tap into the fitness world... First and foremost, it needs to tell the time/date. Then, if it kept a log of heart rate, distances walked, perhaps blood pressure, body temperature, etc., it could be worth something at the right price. But getting limited messages or a tiny map on your wrist isn't going to cut it. More people on the train trying to talk into a device or using speaker phone while holding a device. Great.

2014-2015 NFL Football thread

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 08:44 AM) I may start reading ahead now that they are at jury and less people. Hate they are going to bring someone back in a few weeks. I read onlinebigbrother.com because I have to open my present before xmas, plus the show they air only reveals like 5 percent of the gaming that goes on behind the scenes.

QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 7, 2014 -> 09:23 PM) Yup. Not even a threat to be nominated. I'd bet money he and Cody are final 2. They have the numbers hardcore where they could ditch Caleb. Can't wait to see Caleb get blind sided. Not with who the next Hoh's are. Cody is in real trouble.

QUOTE (chw42 @ Aug 8, 2014 -> 01:26 AM) Well by that logic, you also technically didn't need tablets either. You could have watched your TV shows on your phone. You could have read your books on your phone. You could have browsed the web on your phone. It just so happened that bigger screens fit those things better. You can also read your notifications on your phone, but that requires you to take your phone out of your pocket, unlock your phone, and use your hands. It just so happens that a smart-watch gets rid of all of those needs. Thus, smart-watches are better for viewing your notifications along with an array of other hands-free activities that make it more convenient than looking at your phone. And I'd much rather spend $200 on a watch that does more than read how many steps I took than spend $100 on a Fitbit. Wearables are going to be a thing, I pretty much guarantee that. And the smart-watch is going to be the first wave of said wearables. It hasn't really taken off yet because the first watches to market (Pebble, Samsung Gear) have been very limited and somewhat terrible. Android Wear is the first real OS developed specifically for the smart-watch and it's a great foundation for developers to build upon. What good is reading notifications if you can't reply? I don't guarantee they will be a thing, it's an outlier use case to me for only a subset of the population.
