Found an article that made some sense. The high spin rate FB stayed higher so hitters swung under the ball to either miss it or pop it up. Could lead to some homers though. 5his could explain With so many hitters foul Kopech pitches straight back. It also said low spin rate is also good for FB as these dropped more so hitters pounded it into the ground and hit very few homers. What you don't want are the average ones that look like everybody else's.
-
I get that spin rate alters the path of the ball. With a 4 seam FB it doesn't drop as much and is straighter, this may be why they seem to foul so many off. I'm just not sure how spin rate equates to softer contact.

What does the spin rate have to with FB at a lower velocity?

anyone can have an opinion. However to state that pitchers who have 36 and 40 total MLB starts respectively, won't improve and need to go to the pen is a little premature. They need to allow for a little learning. It probably means they won't be Cy Young candidates but it doesn't rule out being good starters. Like all MLB players they need to learn to adjust.

I think your statistics will depend on the quality of the pitchers as well though. A generalization of "pitchers struggle facing a lineup the third time through" is a no brainer. The pitcher will be tired and the hitters will have seen what he has. The true question is, is there enough quality in the bullpen to regularly take a pitcher out in the 4th or 5th inning? Teams may have two or three good ones but will they have the depth to cover 4 to 5 innings 3 out of 5 nights. This wouldn't include the top starters when they have an off night and they need to make up those innings.

Yeah, unfortunately all of us state schools are struggling. He is looking at the flight school and with $80,000 in flight fees, I think that program has enough coin.

There is some validity to this. However, you always worry about a guy that has 2 UCL replacements already. He may only have a small number of pitches left in that elbow.

i like the corpse reference. In this scenario, they are maximizing their strengths and minimizing their weakness because the starting staff is the weakness. You make reference to the Sox not willing to try it, they shouldn't. The Sox weakness is the bullpen not the starting staff. I would much rather have Lopez in there than most of the crap the Sox have had in the bullpen. If the bullpen improves, then it changes.

They were one of the best bands to see live. Queen and Prince were right there as well.

It still doesn't make sense. if the team's weakness is bullpen depth, pitching them more does not minimize the weakness. I can somewhat understand it if they have a competent bullpen. I would just pitch the starter 2 times through the lineup then bring in the reliever if this is your reasoning. This still puts more pressure on the bullpen but at least you aren't guaranteed to use the 1st reliever for only one inning. If they are going to bring back philosophies from the 70's, I would think the more appropriate one would be to stretch out the better relievers to go 2 or more innings to maximize the good ones. Similiar to the relievers in the early days.

If the bullpen is bad, why do you want those pitchers pitching more?If you have a bad beullpen you want all of the starters to much more.
-
Yeah, you could go either way with this one. It was justified to take him out considering the stressful 6th he had. However, with the pitch count he could have gone another and it would have been interesting to see if he could bounce back and have a good inning. Both sides have a good case.

i don't know. I don't follow the NBA. However, I would think the fans of a given team will cheer more for the player if he is on their favorite team as opposed to another team. Maybe I'm old and wrong but while I don't wish ill will for any player (well almost any) I sure don't actively root for players on the other team, in general. Exceptions would be for a rare achievement such as a no hitter, hitting for the cycle etc.
-
I disagree. I think it helps for fans to identify with teams and players. Obviously, it's better for the players to increase their salaries.
-
The place for pitchers without a consistent second pitch is the bullpen when he won't face a hitter more than once.

So showing improvement for increasing K and decreasing walks over a season means nothing? Each of those categories you cited has drastically decreased as the season has progressed. So a guy who has started on 36 games in his career can't show improvement as he progresses?

I don't necessarily know better than you you , it's just an opinion. The tackling in today's game is indicative of it. It's awful.

How did you like SIU? My son is a senior and that is one of the schools he is looking at.

Eh, it's just like the 60's. Once people get tired of having nothing for the next decade, it will swing back around like the 70's into the 80's. The people who bought the teacher a car probably like capitalism because they could afford to do it. for the sick time, most of us donate extra sick day to a bank that people with long term issues can draw from. it's nothing unique or special.

Sorry, I didn't express it well. I was trying to say that either way the current system allows players in baseball to stay with their current team longer, even if they start his service clock early. Because in reality the actual time on the Sox doesn't change much, only by a few months.
-
I don't mind a coach doing what he thinks is right. I just think playing less is necessarily the correct choice. With the current rules players are hitting less and not ready for the regular season the way it is. Last year the first couple of weeks were like the pre-season with awful play. I think in the long term more injuries will happen with the lack of being ready to take and give a hit because they haven't done it.
-
I was looking at it the other way. With this idea the entire bullpen will pitch regularly about every 4 days. This means the worst pitchers you have are taking innings away from better pitchers.

The fountain is awesome in person during night games. Not tonight though.

Really? That's odd usually the starters go into the 3rd quarter in this preseason game. Risky strategy.
