QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 16, 2018 -> 05:54 AM) The semi auto version can effectively fire 45 rounds a minute bone stock. With a legal modification or two you can get that up to 900 rounds per minute with zero issue. I'm not which legal modification you are referring to but there is no weapon that can effectively fire 900 unless you have an extremely long belt fed ammo system. Far too many clip changes for that to happen. The weapon probably can fire that many rounds but it wouldn't be effective. Your finger would need to be really fast.

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 09:43 PM) The toxic fetishizing culture surrounding guns and in particular the military look alike ones are part of the problem imo. Agreed on this part.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 09:37 PM) Fake, terrible hunters use a rifle that’s main function is to spray and pray. It’s a terrible gun for home defense and for hunting. It’s only function is to engage an enemy with a high rate of fire. It’s also a profit center because of how modular and “cool looking” it is. It serve no useful purpose since there are guns that are more effective at pretty much any useful activity. And I’d say that about most if not all semi automatic rifles. This is very true for the full auto version. This is not true for semi autos. Each indivdiual trigger pull is not a "spray and pray" type of sequence. I agree people only like it because it looks cool. The fact is its not a useful weapon for hunting due to the small caliber. But it works well for target practice as its light and easy to use. As I said I wouldnt care if they did ban this particular rifle, however my fear is that people would instead obtain a higher caliber rifle and do more damage.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 09:27 PM) Actual hunters aren’t using these to hunt for sport or to defend themselves. Just stop it. There is no need for it. Using semi-automatic rifles? They do all the time. They also use AR 15 for sport all the time. they aren't much use in hunting though. They are fairly useless as I said because of they're lack of power.

QUOTE (GreenSox @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 08:36 PM) Probably the worst trade I can remember is the Red Sox trading prospect Bagwell for Larry Anderson. Still, the Bagwell trade was made in August, Anderson was pitching well, he pitched better for Boston and they won the division. Bad trade, but some justification. It was June, the White Sox were tanking, and Shields was having a terrible year. There was no justification for that trade. The FO gets a do-over, one that I don't believe they earned. The dispersal phase has been fine. HOpefully they build a good team this time. How about Doyle Alexander for John Smoltz?

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 09:11 PM) Fully automatic weapons are heavily restricted and thus very expensive but they aren't illegal. I thought they were illegal. I have no issue with full auto being illegal and banned. Those aren't good for anything but mass killings. However, that wouldn't stop this as it was the semi-auto version.

QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 07:31 PM) It’s not about the size of the round, it’s the fact that someone with an AR-15 can fire off an insane number of rounds in a short period of time (with a relatively high level of precision to boot), especially when combined with high capacity magazines. There are plenty of other rifles that could be used for sport shooting that aren’t nearly as deadly as an AR-15. Again, I respect your right for gun ownership, but I can’t justify assault weapons being legal when they’re literally used in mass shootings on what seems like a weekly basis. Time for them to go and see if things get better. You can fire off any oremore rounds from a semi automatic AR 15 than anyother semi automatic rifle. Your finger can only pull the trigger so fast. The full automatic versions of all rifles are already illegal, assault style or not.
-
QUOTE (Chicago White Sox @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 06:57 PM) Why does any civilian need an AR-15? I’m pro gun ownership, but there is absolutely no reason for assault weapons to be legal. They should not be used for hunting or sport and are beyond unnecessary for self defense unless you’re worried about someone else who has one. I’m sure they’re fun to f*** around with, but there is no practical purpose for them and therefore no justification to allow everyday people to have them, especially not when there are weekly shooting sprees involving them. Semi-automatic AR-15 are excellent sport rifles. Mostly because the round isn't very big. It's not much bigger than a .22. The only adavantage is the light weight. So, I guess you could ban them. But my fear is that someone would just to a bigger round which would cause more damage.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 06:52 PM) Mass shootings happen more in America than in all other countries combined. The US has 4.4 % of the world population and 42% of the worlds guns. You can say that isn't a problem, but I thin the evidence is showing it is. I never said it wasn't a problem. I said that semi-automatics aren't the problem. There is certainly a problem. However, is it worse than the bombings in England and France? Maybe there are fewer shootings but the nutcases use explosives instead. Not to mention that just by the size of the country we will have more incidences. I think stricter laws on who can obtain them may help. I'm not sure but they couldn't hurt.

QUOTE (Tony @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 06:26 PM) This is also correct. Kids are getting hunted in our schools on an almost daily basis, and the AR-15 is one of the most commonly used weapons in these massacres. I'm sorry that may screw up someones "past time" or they may need to use a handgun against a coyote, but that's a problem I would hope our lawmakers are willing to deal with, rather than the human body count continuing to pile up from assault weapons. Hand guns kill many more people than the AR-15. As I said in another post they are lucky he chose that weapon there are many more powerful semi-automatic weapons than that. The lawmakers will not do anything against semi-automatic weapons. They should focus more on keeping any legal weapons out of hands of people who shouldn't have them.

QUOTE (Tony @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 06:14 PM) It's also shocking considering how the Tatis trade has been beaten to death on this board. We get it, it was a TERRIBLE trade then, TERRIBLE trade now, and will be a TERRIBLE trade in 5 seasons. I assume Rick Hahn would tell you the same thing, and he absolutely deserves to wear it for that awful move. What else do you want us to do? It's time to move on. Exactly. Every GM has trades that they wished they could take back. They usually occur when trading a young prospect for an aging veteran when making a desperate move to compete.
-
QUOTE (Tony @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 06:12 PM) Many, myself included, don't 100% agree with that. That's fine but you aren't being realistic. You also don't think that hunting or target practice are useful pat times or that people use these weapons for protection of their livelihoods against coyotes and other predators.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 06:13 PM) I am pretty sure anyone who does something like this has some mental issues. I have no idea why AR15s are necessary weapons for civilians. There is nothing wrong with the semi-automatic version of the AR-15 which is the legal version he had. Just be glad that he liked this weapon (because of it's reputation) and not many other more powerful semi-automatic rifles.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 12:00 PM) It doesn't f***ing matter. Cadet Bone Spurs talks about this shooting, and fails to mention guns. I could only imagine what the loved ones of these poor kids think of this guy now Can't piss off the NRA. You don't even need a license in FL to buy a gun. You don't have to register it. You can have as many as you like. Awesome. It sounds like it's a state problem not a national one. There is absolutely nothing wrong with owning a semi-automatic rifle. the weapon isn't the problem, it's how a kid with this many issues was allowed to purchase it. Being a former student and wearing a school ROTC uniform, there was no way any reasonable security would have kept him out of the school.

QUOTE (greg775 @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 05:11 PM) Thing is, some of us don't forgive the Sox front office for mistakes as easily as others. My anger stems from the fact fans pay so much money to go to a game they have the right to b****. Many of you don't care about that. Why should they be forgiven if Tatis turns into a phenom? You can still be a fan and rip the front office at times. You can rip them all you want. Many did when it happened. But to hang on to it for years is not a healthy thing. Are you still angry over the Sammy Sosa trade? how about the Gio Gonzalez trades?
-
QUOTE (wrathofhahn @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 03:52 PM) Also Tatis Jr jumps from 52nd to 8th Are you one of those guys who in school always worried about and wanted to know how everyone else did on tests?

QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 01:25 PM) Hasn't it been determined that Kieth Law is really good at evaluating hitting talent, but has no idea how to asses pitchers? Or is the the opposite? One of those is true. lol I believe Law has stated he really doesn't do much of the evaluations himself. Rather he just talks to scouts, GMs etc. and forms his evaluation from there.

QUOTE (soxfan2014 @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 01:28 PM) Heyward has two potential opt-outs. The first is after the 18 season and if he reaches 550 PAs in 2019, he can opt-out. Assuming no injury, he should reach the 550 but at that point it depends how well he did with the bat. https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/h/heywaja01.shtml The opt outs are still for the player only. As long as he continues the poor play he will not opt out and the Cubs are stuck with a bad contract.
-
QUOTE (bmags @ Feb 14, 2018 -> 09:39 PM) Except Heyward was to be in his 20s getting his second big contract, Darvish will be 33. And a pitcher. Still a disadvantage for the club no matter which way you spin it.

QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Feb 15, 2018 -> 12:35 PM) I've been cynical as hell on his situation but this is really great news. That he's throwing near full bore (relative to the time of year) is highly encouraging. Obviously the proof will be in the pudding (his performance and innings load) but I was fully expecting him to be still on the "no timetable for starting baseball workouts" program at this point. He still is this phase as far as I can tell from all reports. He is only playing catch. He's not into an actual throwing program. -
QUOTE (GermanSock @ Feb 14, 2018 -> 01:21 AM) But they train for speed while many baseball players gain weight in their early 20s to get more power which hurts the speed. There are certainly some baseball players who keep their speed into their 30s if they don't put on too much mass. Power does not hurt speed. In fact power=speed. Those 100m track athletes lift for pure power. They mature and gain weight in their early 20's like everyone else.
-
QUOTE (Eminor3rd @ Feb 12, 2018 -> 10:31 AM) I've seen studies that show that velocity and speed peak between 20-22 in baseball players. Data is only over the last 15 years or so but that's where the idea comes from anyway. That's weird. Most 100m track athletes don't start winning until their mid-20's.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 13, 2018 -> 03:00 PM) Daryl Van SchouwenVerified account @CST_soxvan Nate Jones holding nothing back, expects to be ready for #WhiteSox opener. With video. Hopefully, he's finally modified his mechanics to keep the arm/elbow from dragging behind his trunk. Although with the ulnar nerve moved, the only thing left would be the UCL. Hopefully, the reconstruction holds up.

QUOTE (ChiliIrishHammock24 @ Feb 13, 2018 -> 02:03 PM) So 2 yrs/$45M is what Cubs fans and Darvish will be hoping for. Yep. The last 4 years are like the years on Heyward's contract. Darvish will only take them if he plays poorly and the Cubs will be stuck with them if he plays poorly.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Feb 10, 2018 -> 09:21 PM) It tells me they think all things similar they would rather have the extra draft picks when he signs elsewhere. Could be. Something tells me theres more to it than that.
