The Sox will never compete with the revenue of the Yankees and Dodgers. The Orioles had years where they were as bad as the Sox are. The Sox are grouped in the the rest of the league going through the times of up and down and trying to figure out how to get out of mediocrity.
-
I agree. They both have significant limitations from getting appropriate value. If they both stay healthy the rest if the way the value goes up. That is taking a chance with both though.

It very well be can easier on the arm for some pitchers. Some just don't naturally have that endurance to hold their velocity and stuff with multiple innings. Everyone is different. For some starting is easier for others it's shorter outing more often. Either one CAN work. They need to find out what works best for him. Because this role is new to him there is no track record. But the underlying principle is that he has to picltch many fewer innings.
-
This is the big question. Would a decrease in velocity indicate fatigue or that tissue is breaking down. He could be getting fatigued but working harder to compensate and causing long term issues. How much of a chance do they want to take that it's an injury happening not just fatigue.

The availability does decrease his value. It may be below what the Sox will take for him. This is the downside of pitching hom so many onnimgs in the season so far. -

Sounds like they offered him something but he immediately rejected it so he probably is looking for something big or betting on himself for another year to get the big deal. -

I agree with this. But that potential is enticing. That's why the Sox have done him somewhat of a disservice by allowing him to throw so many innings already. However it has also showed that he can be a really good starter. -

Your premise is correct that Crochet should have a say. He has never been a starter and has never learned how to deal with a starters structure and load. He has no idea what he us doing. He is making it up just like the Sox are. He has physical limitations that he has no idea about how to quantify them. What is normal fatigue, what are normal aches? He could he doing long term damage to his body and he thinks it's normal because he's never experienced them. -
I think crochet will value his health over his preference for the rest if this year. He has proven he can start and will be a starter next year. For the rest of this year he needs to decrease to bullpen level innings otherwise he won't have a next year.
-
I've already been wrong with how much they would pitch him so what do I know.
-
That will be a key. Do whatever they can to save him for the postseason. He can't have much left.
-
They will need to be creative that's for sure.
-
I don't think so. It probably helped. Everyone knew he was going to get bullpen number innings in the second half. This shows other teams that the Sox are protecting him for the next team.

They work a heck of a lot more than 6 hours a day. It's a really hard life especially with travel. Spending 6 months only being at home for no more than a week at home at a time destroys families. -
Sox at Fish 7-6 3:10CDT, Crochet on the bump

I believe most soundly criticized him for the philosophy of placing an importance of spending on the bullpen. -

Makes one think that Hahns idea of spending money on a couple of relivers wasn't such a bad idea. -
Me too. This is just my prognosticating. I think some depends on how many they can trade.
-
Part if it was he never built up the innings. He is one the COVID shutdown really hurt. He was supposed to ease into a starting role that year.
-
Not going into the season. My guess would be that they tried the starter for lack of options. When it turned out this good he became trade fodder and increasing his value is the priority. Same reason they are playing vets over the kids. Maximize their value, trade the ones they can, release the others and play kids after the deadline.
-
I don't think it's that the Sox don't care about his health although they are pushing it. I think they don't care about saving his innings for the second half of the season as they know he won't be here.
-
Those were the options. That was my point back then. I don't care how they did it but that innings range should be the limit. Since the Sox have made him just a standard starter, it's going to be really interesting how he is handled from here. They have already gone past what would be common philosophy on how to handle this situation. But this is a unique case with turning a college reliever with his injury history.
-
I guess I still look as an opener as a pen guy. So 1 to 2 innings an outing on a regular basis would work.
-
I disagree. I think any team trading for him puts him in the pen to save him for the postseason. The Sox will keep him there but they don't care, its all about showing his value. Even though i think it's detrimental to him in the long run.
-
That's because they use maximum effort with every throw. They wear themselves out, no "pacing." They throw fewer innings but work harder. This is why they are getting injured at a higher rate but throw fewer innings. Overuse is not just from volume. It can come from too much intensity as well. Overuse is just the tissues breaking down from too much force in a given area. It can even be caused by poor mechanics with an acceptable workload. Hence why injuries happen even with normal pitching.
-
I agree.
