QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Apr 13, 2015 -> 02:13 PM) This is a big thing for me. Danks and Noesi both have the ability to be kinda OK or any range of bad. That's frightening. Rodon should be up now, and he should do some MiLB time during all-star break to preserve the extra year of arbitration. Reason being..... I don't like our offense enough to have just three good starters for these first few months. I'm fine with our offense if we are one of those undoubtedly pitching-first teams. And being win-now, I'd like the best four starters in place ASAP. He will be done by the end of August then. He cannot pitch more than 130-160 innings this year without concerns of injury.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Apr 13, 2015 -> 01:59 PM) Noesi was able to limit the damage, but I think the shadows helped him out. It was his first start of the year, the team was 0-3 coming in, and it was the home opener, which is pretty much for a guy who has been waived twice to take on. Hopefully, nerves had something to do with his control issues, and he puts that behind him, because he won't be able to get away with giving up 2 runs with the walks, balks, wild pitches and HBP very often. They have Rodon in the wings. He is going to come up. They have seemingly set him up to make as few starts in AAA as possible while staying in their rotation. Another successful start or 2, it's hard to imagine one of Danks or Noesi, assuming no injury, will be in the rotation more than a couple of more starts. I have a feeling you are going to see couple weeks of 5 inning starts to limit his minor league innings. If all goes well he'll come up around the beginning to mid-May and stay with the limitation for a bit to try to push his longer, better starts toward the end of the season before he wears out.

QUOTE (Vance Law @ Apr 12, 2015 -> 04:04 PM) The manager brought in the closer in a non-save situation. He doesn't know the rules! If we win it's an accident! Only because he was already warming up. If he has warmed up, it shouldn't be wasted.

QUOTE (Vance Law @ Apr 10, 2015 -> 05:43 PM) You've got to like Ventura calling for the double right there It's all his fault. It was a mistake. He actually called for a triple.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 10, 2015 -> 02:47 PM) http://espn.go.com/mlb/story/_/id/12648769...my-john-surgery Another one ptac will enjoy on TJ. Might want to think twice about Aiken and Matuella. One part I think they missed is a qualitative portion to ask why the average fastball velocity decreased. Were they told to not throw as hard as often. I think thats one reason the sox are so low in TJ surgery. Cooper really stresses decreasing velocity to improve movement and command.

QUOTE (BrianAnderson @ Apr 8, 2015 -> 02:17 PM) Flavum also responded on another topic 5 minutes later changing his "realistic" guesses. All of a sudden there were less starts for Rodon, and a few more for others in the minors. So not sure how he can so vehemently defend his post, and then change it 5 minutes later. Nobody has a crystal ball. But historic numbers, generally win out. We had 45 starts last year by guys that weren't people you'd necessarily expect. It'll happen this year too. Historically, the Sox have fewer of these unexpected starts than most teams. So I would expect that number to go down. Last year was really high for them in this category. Although your premise of there will be starts from other pitchers is valid.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 8, 2015 -> 08:16 AM) Leonard Williams doesn't get you closer to a Super Bowl if you don't have a QB. I don't know if Mariota will be any good, but if you have the chance to go for a QB with potential to be good, I say go for it, that's how important QBs are nowadays. Give Mariota 2-3 years, if he's not good, move on to the next. With the changes in the rooke wage scale, it's not like you will have to sign him to a massive Braford-esque contract. The Rams traded down, acquired so many great draft picks, and how many playoff appearances has that earned them? You need to find a QB. Sure it does. If the Bears draft a QB next year, the D line is already on it's way to being really good with him. The Bernstein model of closer to the Super Bowl doesn't necessarily apply to next year.

QUOTE (Chet Kincaid @ Apr 7, 2015 -> 11:16 AM) I think it's really REALLY stupid to get mad at a team or batter for "showboating". It's a freaking game. You're supposed to be amped up when you do something good. Football players jump around like kids when they make a play. Basketball players pump their fists and get excited after a play. PITCHERS pump their fists when they get a big strike out. A batter hits a home run and even looks at it too long, and stupid people get an attitude. To hell with baseball and it's outdated and arcane unwritten rules. They should lighten up. It's a freaking game. The difference is that it wasn't a big or important play. It was a home run in the middle of a boring game they were already winning. A game winning hit in the 9th or a big strikeout in a close game is different. Play the game get excited where it's warranted. None of it matters to me as I'm not playing the game. However I can see why it effects the players the way it does. Does it make it right...no, but they're human and people get ticked off.

Willie Mays Hayes reincarnated.

QUOTE (iamshack @ Apr 5, 2015 -> 11:38 AM) Actually, in the last few seasons, he has started pacing himself more. He'll throw low 90's until he's either in a high-leverage situation early, or he's deeper in the game. This has only been the last couple. How many years was it before though? I know it's still not a common thought but I still think this overthrowing is the primary cause of elbow issues.

What Being a Fan of Baseball is all about...this payoff
ptatc replied to caulfield12's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 4, 2015 -> 06:52 PM) http://www.kansascity.com/sports/mlb/kansa...le17387537.html Just like in 2005 for White Sox fans...make the years of anger and frustration and almost wanting to give up and throw in the towel and say "sports shouldn't matter so much" worth it all, for that rare payoff when everything comes together and the breaks all go your way. Of course, for teams like the Dodgers, Yankees, Red Sox and Cardinals...it's an annual expectation. If it's the White Sox, Cubs, Royals, Indians, etc., there's almost no way to describe it because you never in a million years expect it. The only thing I think could top it would be the impossibility of the University of Iowa winning a National Championship in my lifetime in either basketball or football. I would agree with LDF and disagree with your premise a little. Being a fan of baseball, I love going to a game and enjoying the experience. Seeing a well played game out in the sun, is the reward itself. I love the game of baseball. The other side is being a White Sox fan. That is the point you are making and all of the points are valid. but to me it's secondary to the love of baseball. I can and do enjoy a game even if the Sox lose. -
QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 3, 2015 -> 07:58 PM) So Nolan Ryan was basically just the sole exception to the rule, a complete freak of nature? They didn't have stadium radar gun readings back then, but I'm sure he was well aware of the scouts' guns. Or Randy Johnson, to a lesser extent? That's possible. Some people are genetic freaks. But it's also relative to how hard you throw. If a guy can throw 100 he can sit at 96 for a long time. If a guy tops out at 96 and tries to stay there, there is more of a chance for injury. It would be interesting to see how often Ryan stayed at his max velocity. He had a really good curveball as well. He is also an exception who could throw with the Tom house mechanics that killed Mark Prior's career. Most pitcher's can't handle them. Same applies to Johnson. I would like to know how often he stayed at his ceiling. It's all playing the averages anyway. Some pitcher's can handle it but I think they are the exceptions

QUOTE (Jose Paniagua @ Apr 3, 2015 -> 02:13 PM) Were things to go south this year, who do you think would be scapegoat #1? Or most likely blame candidate, deserved or not? Some possibilities: -Giant target on Ventura now that he finally has big talent now -Avisail -Conor for not being big time Chicago tough demeanor-wise It will be weird not having Beckham on this list but alas all traditions must end. He's now a background piece. No doubt in will Ventura #1. This board and city in general always blame coaches/managers. Beckham will be blamed because he is a wasted spot and prevents the Sox from having a much better player on the team who would have led them to the World Series.

QUOTE (shipps @ Apr 3, 2015 -> 11:42 AM) It really is disappointing. You would think the people there bidding on things arent there because they really want all that crap but because they want to donate for the cause. And their hatred for Cutler exceeds their willingness to donate for the cause they are looking to support? Its laughable to me but whatever...its their money. It's amazing the lengths people will go to "hate" a person because he doesn't play a sport up to their expectations. My son played youth football and drew #8 when Grossman was the QB for the Bears. Adults on the sidelines teased him about the number and Grossman even though he played d line.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Apr 3, 2015 -> 11:44 AM) Maybe my work experience, letters of recommendation, and essays were more important to them. Who knows. Yes, as we discussed, they all look for different things so it all worked out in the end.Tthat's why you accentuate the positives of the applicant, of which you obviously had plenty. Enjoy the experience, before they actually make you go work in the real world again!

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 3, 2015 -> 10:44 AM) True but the Giants showed us you only need one starting pitcher to succeed. The Royals almost won with two. That's why you get as many as you can. I'm sure the Giants thought it would be Lincecum for awhile. Pitcher's success is fickle. They still won due to the pitching.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Apr 3, 2015 -> 02:06 AM) I got into a Ph.D program with s***ty test scores. I am ready to spend the next 5-6 years of my life in absolute poverty. Excellent to hear!! Congratulations! Welcome to the club! (this is the best beer will will be able to afford for awhile)

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Apr 2, 2015 -> 10:51 PM) Lol. Rodon seems legit but I would take Bryant without a second thought. Always take the pitching over hitting. Pitching wins the post season.

QUOTE (caulfield12 @ Apr 2, 2015 -> 02:36 PM) http://www.freep.com/story/sports/mlb/tige...eason/70806524/ Another case for PTAC to diagnose. I gave some opinions in another theead. Not knowing everything that is going on, he just threw too hard too often. Now many things are breaking down. He needs to learn to not throw with that much intensity and still get people out. That's why its difficult to become a really successful pitcher for an extended period of time. They should learn early how to pitch purposely not throwing their hardest.
-
QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Apr 3, 2015 -> 06:58 AM) coupled with multiple seasons in a row going deep into the playoffs. IIRC nobody has thrown more innings than he has in the past 5 years It's not the innings, it's the intensity of the innings he tries to throw too hard too often He is one pitcher you always read about "still throwing 98 in the 8th inning." This is the type of thing that wears a pitcher down. In the past there have been discussions of pitchers hsving down years after long playoff runs. It's not the extra innigs, although it could be for some, it's the I tensity of the postseason innings after the grind of the regular season. It's like sprinting the last 365 yards after the first 26 miles of a marathon. The pitchers need to do it because the competition is better but it is hard on them physically.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Apr 2, 2015 -> 08:04 AM) Decidedly average, is the answer. But I can't really complain. Honestly, maybe I'm drinking the Kool-Aid, but I think the White Sox just make smarter business decisions than most teams. Chris Sale and Jose Abreu have two of the best contracts in baseball. http://deadspin.com/2015-payrolls-and-sala...dium=socialflow Team 2015 Payroll 1. Los Angeles Dodgers $272,789,040 2. However, to make it fair there should be a floor as well. From the numbers above maybe 175 at the top and 90 at the bottom?

Mark Buehrle still a class act.....JB not so much
ptatc replied to juddling's topic in The Diamond Club
QUOTE (Jake @ Mar 31, 2015 -> 05:09 AM) In the context of an article that is all about how Buehrle doesn't like hazing, I don't see how that "f*** you" comment to the person who hazed him could be considered friendly MB's comment about how some people go over the top with hazing and all he remembered remembered was that it got really annoying, doesn't sound like he was really upset about it. He could have been but the tone doesn't sound like it and MB in general is a really good guy and doesn't hold grudges.
