QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 12, 2014 -> 03:25 PM) Even if that catcher is Tyler Flowers? Doesn't Crawford have the night off for the Hawks?

QUOTE (raBBit @ Mar 12, 2014 -> 03:57 PM) Paulino's line through three is interesting. 3 IP, 2H, 2ER, 0 BB, 5K. 26 pitches, 3 Balls. Wildly efficient in his pitch count considering the Ks. Typically, high strikeout guys throw alot of pitches. The ground ball type pitchers are the ones who are usually efficient.

QUOTE (ptatc @ Mar 8, 2014 -> 08:00 PM) Should have specified, the first snow big enough to cover the tree (with the snow plow throwing it into the yard). My Christmas tree made an appaerence for two days. Now buried again under the new 6 inches of snow we got last night.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 10, 2014 -> 03:38 PM) I see your point, but it's still a shade of grey. She was just recently on the Daily Show about her Iraq War documentary (because what hasn't been said about that the last ten years?) and she was getting pretty animated about it. She's got an agenda for that. I remember she had a long interview with Jon Stewart on her own show and they debated cable news generally and she was convinced that MSNBC was the "truth" but Fox News was the devil and Stewart kept telling her, no, they're the same. MSNBC copied Fox News. And she wasn't buying it. She found a niche with the hardcore left. Just like O'Reilly or Hannity have found theirs. The fun part about this is that on XM they have these far left and far right stations. I listen to one to work and the other on the way home. It's really entertaining how each group can spin the same story and facts to their own agendas.

QUOTE (IowaSoxFan @ Mar 10, 2014 -> 09:14 AM) Stats aren't everything though, if the Sox see he has the stuff and makeup, they may also see something in his delivery that they can correct. Even college players are not plug and play, there is still some development that needs to happen. Kolek's frame is kind of scary though, at 250 lbs already you can imagine he will pack on some more once he leaves home. There is definitely high upside in the fastball, but he seems to have a closer profile until he can further develop his secondary stuff. You have to be very sure of his makeup and ability to develop before using that pick on him. Very true for the first comment. For the second one, I liked his off speed pitch. He dropped down little when he threw it a few times on the video someone posted, however it looked very promising. He is not a one pitch picther, though it may take some refinement.

QUOTE (knightni @ Mar 8, 2014 -> 08:08 AM) Our first big snow was the day before Thanksgiving. It's still here. Never melted. Should have specified, the first snow big enough to cover the tree (with the snow plow throwing it into the yard).

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Mar 8, 2014 -> 06:00 PM) And why would Tommy say the first couple of weeks of spring training or the entire thing is not important? It is the time to iron out the kinks. Guys aren't going to be in midseason form. If there are going to be mistakes, now is a good time for them to happen. Chris Sale got lit up the other day. Should we all panic? Pinning too much on performance both good and bad, is a mistake. There was a stretch a few years ago that for about 4 or 5 years straight, the player that led the majors in spring homers failed to hit 10 in the regular season. It only matters to young guys trying to make a team. From the sounds of it Davidson has played himself to AAA.

QUOTE (Jenksismyb**** @ Mar 7, 2014 -> 06:10 PM) Isn't there a legit concern that come time to enroll in class the fund won't have the money to pay for it? Since, you know, it's basically a legal ponzi scheme? That was the bright start program. This one so far is in good shape.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Mar 7, 2014 -> 11:19 AM) 41 degrees out b****es!!! Maybe this weekend I will finally take my Christmas decorations down. Either they have been fully covered in snow, or it's been raining or too cold. The day before the first big snow (around the beginning of Jan.) I put my Christmas tree out in the yard to be picked up. It is currently a snow pile still in my front yard. Hopefully the snow will melt and somebody will still pick it up.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Mar 7, 2014 -> 04:21 PM) Do you recommend using this program? Yes, it's excellent and saves alot of money. You get the tuition at today's price and pay it over 10 years. If they don't go to an illinois public school, they get the average of all 9 public school tuition per credit hour paid to the institution of their choice. It's not as good of a deal as if they go to an illinois school but you still get quite a bit more money than what you paid into it.

QUOTE (Iwritecode @ Mar 7, 2014 -> 03:40 PM) My kids are on their own for college. Just like me, my wife and all my friends were. I honestly can’t think of a single person that I know personally that had their college paid for by their parents. I believe in helping as long as they help as well to show the commitment. We started the college Illinois plan when each kid was in kindergarten. If they go to an illinois public school their tuition, books and mandatory fees will be paid for. They will need to cover room, board and expenses. We do part and they do part. If they don't go to school we get the money back with interest.

QUOTE (bmags @ Mar 7, 2014 -> 10:07 AM) I love this thread. We've learned: -Yes this is the only lawsuit of it's kind but it is DEFINITELY indicative of an entire generation of laziness that no soxtalker can relate to because they all bootstrapped themselves up and worked a food job in their life. -No, we definitely need to keep things in perspective about occupy's contributions to Sandy relief. Though they may have helped a little, it was nowhere near the work done by larger organizations like red cross. Just for the record, I refused to do that.

QUOTE (Y2HH @ Mar 7, 2014 -> 10:04 AM) You can shoot a fuel can with a gun all you want, it will not explode from that. Lead does not sparks like in the movies. It'll make it all leak out, though. heh I feel much better now.

QUOTE (MexSoxFan#1 @ Mar 7, 2014 -> 10:00 AM) Irresponsible parents. I'm going to sue my kids if they don't want to go to college...hopefully it won't come down to that. I like that. It's going to be response if they want to live at home after 18 if they are not going to school.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 7, 2014 -> 09:56 AM) Katrina was literally the model of how not to handle a disaster. The only good thing that came from it was figuring out what not to do. They STILL havent full recovered. You stories are probably really interesting on that topic, it already sounds f***ing crazy. Your right. I never really thought I would have a discussion about whether or not to shoot at people. Most of us opted to shoot high and try to keep the others down while we got away. Luckily no one was ever hit severely hit. Driving in the back of a pickup with 200 gallons of fuel behind you while people were shooting was terrifying. We've still never told our wives. They would not have been happy about us going multiple times.

John Danks is the 7th worst contract in baseball
ptatc replied to Steve9347's topic in Pale Hose Talk
QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Mar 7, 2014 -> 09:30 AM) That is really good news. Danks big problem last year was he had no speed differential on his stuff last years. Hitters could just sit in the middle and easily adjust to up or down. If he has some slack to his change, it makes his fastball much harder to hit. If John Danks is even 2011 John Danks, let alone 2008 to 2010, this team is a LOT better instantly. If we get back Retro-Danks, we gain a Tanaka-level without paying anywhere near that price. That's part of it. However, like he said in the article I think it was more that he couldn't generate the spin on the cutter to get it what he wanted it to do consistently. I'm not sure if it was arm speed or learning his "new shoulder." If he gets that back, he will be fine. -
QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 7, 2014 -> 09:40 AM) Yes but those large orgs had tens of thousands of qualified workers doing 100 times the good that those Occupy kids did. s***, there were religious orgs that probably did the same amount of work. Volunteers in general are great, but Occupy was a portion of a tiny drop in a bucket. In the case of Sandy, money was incredibly important due to the vast desolation of so much infrastructure and the complete collapse of local economy. I agree. He should be proud of the help he and his group provided however it wasn't most of the work. My brother lives in Mississippi 1 1/2 hours from NO. He didn't have utilities for 3 months after Katrina. We made three trips down there with fuel and generators as well as food while being shot at from the sides of the roads. People would cut down trees to block the roads to rob trucks. I'm proud of how we helped his small area but that is a drop in the bucket compared to the large groups with help. Reddy should be proud of his volunteering and helping but also keep it in perspective.

Probably not a celebrity to most but Dr. Frank Jobe died at 88. He is the person responsible for most of the current ideas in rehabbing pitchers. He invented the "Tommy John" surgery as well as the "throwers Ten exercises that all pitchers still use parts of today. He is an innovator that will be missed.

QUOTE (southside hitman @ Mar 6, 2014 -> 02:25 PM) His delivery is kind of jerky? Too many potential red flags for my taste at #3 overall. Throwing gas will get you noticed in HS, but in the pros he's gotta have some great secondary stuff too. I think his delivery is fine. He has good trunk flexion and flexibility. One reason it looks a little funny is that he doesn't stride straight. His front foot lands too far closed than normal, so it looks like he is spinning a bit. As for the weight, "Lady, I ain't no athlete i'm a baseball player." If the kid can throw he can throw. The development of the secondary pitches is the concern. It looks like he drops a little on the off speed stuff. If someone thinks he can be taught it, I'd take him.

QUOTE (RockRaines @ Mar 6, 2014 -> 04:40 PM) Retail will teach you to be nice to other people. Working in a bar changes your outlook on the service industry as well. However, the job that made me want to stay in school and get good grades was my demo job. I worked with a crew demo-ing warehouses on the southside. get up at 4am and get home so tired you can barely see to pick the black boogers out of your nose will teach you the value of education real fast. I shoveled sh** at the race track instead of fast food. The races were from 7-12 and I didn't get home to 2am after clean ups. That was the work that kept me at university even though I could have signed on with the construction company when they rebuilt the track. I would rather treat the people who got beat down by the job than be one. But getting the job is the primary idea behind.

QUOTE (pettie4sox @ Mar 6, 2014 -> 02:27 PM) I started working at 14 with a work permit. My parents really didn't give me s*** so I said I would just go work for it. Best decision is to send your kids to work, no matter how rich you are. You will learn responsibility and hopefully that discipline will carry over in other aspects of life. My favorite example of this is George Lucas. He has adopted kids and his comment is routinely "I earned my money, how did you earn yours." He started a a clean up kid for Carol Shelby then worked his way up to racing for him. I started bean walking and detasseling when I was 11. My rule with my kids is that if you are in a full time sport there is an allowance based on grades. When you are not in season, it's time to earn your own spending money. I agree with the stay away from fast food concept. My job throughout college was working at Balmoral race track.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 6, 2014 -> 02:19 PM) Whatever Danks's velocity is today it shouldn't matter either...I almost don't want him throwing all-out yet, take his time and build up. In 2 weeks or so, then maybe start telling me what it is. He should not be throwing his hardest yet. Shoulder muscles are just like any other muscles. Do you run a marathon without training? Do you bench press 300 lbs on the first attempt? They need to work the muscles into shape.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 5, 2014 -> 03:46 PM) See, I disagree, I think De Aza would be a decent match for this team if they were a WS contending team because he could be a useful PH bat on an extremely RH-heavy roster, and because you might not care that much if getting him 400 PA's requires taking 200 PA's away from Viciedo and Garcia each. You also might not worry as much if De Aza got off to a slow start in that case (like we saw with him last year). The downside on a WS contender is you really don't want to use him as a defensive replacement very often because he's not a clearly substantial upgrade over anyone on the roster and those could be really useful in late innings as well. I agree. On a contending team, I would not be waiting for Viciedo and DeAza would be my 4th outfielder. In this scenario Vicideo is in the minors or traded. I'm not waiting for him to develop at the MLB. In the state the Sox are in with so many young players developing Abreu, Eaton, Davidson, Garcia, I think the Sox can give Viciedo another year and trade DeAza if the price is right.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 5, 2014 -> 03:05 PM) I think all of those are summarized well by me calling it silly. I think it's a poor move to break camp with both of them. I think this would be the case if they were a WS contending team. An extra more versatile player would be preferable. However with this team Hahn can wait for a better deal if he thinks one is out there. All this being said, I think one of them is traded prior to the beginning of the season and this problem will not exist.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Mar 5, 2014 -> 01:30 PM) It remains silly to have both of them on the same roster this season. The only reason would be if RH thinks he can get more in a trade at the deadline.
