QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 3, 2014 -> 07:57 PM) What guy? My secretary? If you couldnt understand "heroin" versus "heroine" thats more on your reading comprehension and less on my lack of proofreading an internet post. Even when I get paid to write, there is someone who proofreads for me. Ptac, You have the study? Most studies Ive ever seen regarding marijuana have a problem in that many of the marijuana smokers are also cigarette smokers, so its hard to determine its impact alone. Here are a couple of decent ones. I wish I would have saved the couple for which I'm looking. I can't remember the journals. It was specific to athletes. When I made the comment about "you will have a heart attack" that was meant for people who do it regularly. Something like once a week won't do it but the chronic users have a 30% increased chance of heart attacks compared to non-users. mj.pdf mj1.pdf

There are some pretty good studies I will dig them up for you. It relates more to the chemical make up than anything else.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Feb 3, 2014 -> 01:34 PM) Im not sure, I cant speak from experience, I can only say what Ive seen and relay the experience of those that I know. The problem with "Dare" and "Just Say No" is that it created a false belief that all drugs were equally bad. Thus when some kids tried smoking weed, etc, and it didnt kill them, they just believed all drugs arent that bad. But some are, some are really f***ing ridiculously dangerous with almost 0 redeemable qualities. Its coincidental, but Friday I was talking about Heroine. And I flat out told my friends that we can try a lot of s***, but dont ever f*** around with needles and most specifically Heroine. Because its not even a happy drug, its a f***ing sad drug that you take when you want to dull the entire world. Which also is part of the problem, a lot of people who turn to Heroine are already partially down the path of being gone. All of them will hasten your death. What many don't realize about pot is that it's cardiac equivalent is 5 cigarettes. So if you smoke pot you will have a heart attack. It also really limits your healing ability. It has a medical value because it basically eliminates inflammation and something like glaucoma is helped by this. However, it really limits regular healing and takes 2-3 times as long for normal injuries to heal.

QUOTE (nitetrain8601 @ Feb 1, 2014 -> 08:29 AM) As did I. We plan on moving to LA in about 3 years, and my son, who loves LA said he'll miss the snow. I told him, after awhile, you won't. This winter, I've had him help me shovel(no snowblowing) the snow. After about the 3rd time, he tells me he can't wait for LA and this weather could kick rocks. Now, everyday he's asking when are we moving. Chicago summers are the best, but the inconsistency of weather, day to day, makes it too miserable for me and my family. I still enjoy the snow. However, the number of days around 0 degrees or lower is getting to me. Today is great. Snow but 25, it's skiing weather.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Feb 1, 2014 -> 01:24 PM) LOL. The Cubs sent a lackey on the radio today to float the possibility of the rooftop owners making them leave Wrigley. Smart business move. If the city/state can't be the villan they need to find one somewhere.

QUOTE (LittleHurt05 @ Jan 31, 2014 -> 07:43 PM) Agreed. As awesome as Opening Day is, I find spring training so boring and prolonged. A month and a half of meaningless games? Ugh. I disagree. I just love baseball. I don't care if they don't count in the standings just watching baseball is a joy. -
It was snowing down here just south of Rt. 30 for about an hour but then stopped.

QUOTE (Steve9347 @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 07:38 AM) I'm 7 episodes into Black Orphan. It's amazing. No idea where the "slow episodes in the middle" comment came from - I feel like the foot's been on the gas all season. As stated earlier, it's become one of my favorites.

It was more than a moment but the game in 83 or 84 when it lasted until 1am or 2am and they had to continue it the next day. We skipped school to go to the continuation. Baines hit won it with an HR in about the 24th inning.

QUOTE (Jose Abreu @ Jan 30, 2014 -> 09:03 PM) I just realized so much White Sox stuff has happened since 2005 that I've forgotten about. Please add whatever you can remember and I'll add them to this master list: -Buehrle perfect -Humber perfect -Wise catch -Ramirez glove flip -Ramirez grand slam record -Ramirez grand slam VS DET -Buehrle flip -Ramirez flip -Iguchi play (2006, right) -B2B2B2B HRs -2008 Playoffs -Jenks consecutive batters retired record -Buehrle consecutive batters retired record The Iguchi play I remember was in the 2005 playoffs.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 30, 2014 -> 10:06 AM) If Jared Mitchell becomes useful on the major league level, that would be one of the greatest comebacks from totally sucking of all time. If he wasn't a first round pick, he would probably be sitting next to Jake from State Farm right now. I think the major injury bought him a little time as well. It is a very difficult injury to come back from that early in your career due to the loss of development time. -
QUOTE (BigEdWalsh @ Jan 30, 2014 -> 08:56 AM) Jack McDowell will manage the Ogden Raptors in the rookie Pioneer League this summer. They're a Dodgers affiliate. Guess the music career of "stick figure" didn't go as planned.

Northwestern Wildcat Players Attempt to Unionize

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 03:52 PM) Some people don't see any good reason that the players who actually play the game should be treated as disposable while the coaches and administrators make millions of dollars a year. Why don't you give a s*** that these people who play a game for your entertainment can face lifelong health issues because of it? It doesn't even require you, as an individual, to do or change anything at all. They're just asking for some of the revenue to go towards the players themselves for scholarship guarantees and medical issues that directly result from the game. I'm also unclear as to why anybody but the industry that makes billions of dollars a year off of these athletes should be responsible for medical conditions that arise from playing the sport. What's the moral argument here against medical coverage for athletes and for keeping all of the revenue with the non-athletes? Against not giving athletes a voice when discussing working conditions and durations before adding more and more games and practices? How is this different than say a truck driver. Many more of them die in crashes and become injured than football. I see many in the clinic that have lifelong injuries but I haven't heard too many people give a crap about them. The education and other benefits the players receive are more than many "regular' employees and the degree will set them up pretty well if they do it right. -

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 04:55 PM) You realize you just said that to a person who spent 6.5 years in Grad School for 1/10th of those salaries? I've come to realize that the more education you have the less money you make. When I worked in the field I made a heck of a lot more than I do at the university. -

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 02:07 PM) I was more making a joke about public high school teams. NCAA Football and Men's BB are basically professional leagues these days, but what about NCAA swimming/track/wrestling etc.? I have plenty of issues with the amount of money sports can siphon away from academic institutions (e.g. Rutgers), but I don't know that eliminating the professionalized NCAA sports is really a solution. I was being the far end Devil's advocate as well. There are plenty of opportunities in track and wrestling at the professional level if you are that good. There is USA swimming and such for most of the others as well. This would make them truly amateur where it is not a job and they could get funding from the USOC. However, the point stands that sports is a way to get athletes into schools when many of them couldn't afford it. This a agree with. Maybe it should be that they need to be free. No charging for anything to college sports? -

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 01:49 PM) Get rid of the socialist GOVERNMENT youth sports leagues and let the PRIVATE SECTOR innovate! Actually I would prefer this. Get the "professional athletics" out of the universities and make the NFL go like baseball and create their own minor leagues. We know this will never happen due to the money generated but it would solve many of the problems. -

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 01:38 PM) If they get injured, they can lose their scholarship and not have medical coverage for their injuries. These guys are going out there week after week, putting their bodies at risk for your entertainment (and money!). Colter signed up and took the risk that he did, but why is it wrong for him to want to lessen that risk or at least help protect against that risk for future players? This is the only reason to have the union. Not even so much for NW but for the smaller schools with smaller budgets. The "wroking environment" needs to improve for many of the smaller schools. -

QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 29, 2014 -> 08:39 AM) Even if we accept the claim that everyone gets paid in proportion to what they generate at face value (lol no), in "adulthood" the entire employment market isn't controlled by one cartel that completely forbids you from any form of outside compensation while turning around and profiting off of the very same celebrity. And you can unionize. These players can't shop their services around, they can't negotiate compensation packages, they can't sign endorsement deals on the side or often even take a regular part-time job without jumping through a bunch of hoops. The other side is that they are getting alot of compensation for playing a sport. Most will not go on to make a living at the sport. They may not have been accepted to the school without the the scholarship. Being allowed a free education as well as cost of living money is more than 90% of the athletes will get later on. This education sets them up for life if they take advantage of it. Although I agree the unionization is a good idea for protection from mostly medical issues as far as "working conditions" are concerned. -
QUOTE (StrangeSox @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 01:58 PM) I don't know one way or the other, but it's not obvious to me why having it at a neutral site increases revenue. Because most of the tickets are sold to big corporate sponsors and such at inflated prices. If one of the teams got the home field many of the tickets would have to go to the fans. This way the NFL can get more money from the sponsors. I think it's 25-30% of the tickets actually go to the fans of the two teams.
-
QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 12:46 PM) Exactly, and it really isn't a neutral field if the weather conditions favor one team more than the other just because they limit the opponent. No one is going to change their mind, but the Super Bowl is probably the biggest spectacle in pro sports. Up until now it hasn't needed the gimmick of snow or blizzard or mud to keep people interested. It appears a bullet will be dodged and conditions Sunday won't play a big part in the outcome of the game. But there would definitely be a huge debate if the weather was awful and ultimately that decided who took home the trophy. It also is not a neutral field if one teams is used to playing in a dome and the other is used to playing outside. Noise factor can come into play here not just the weather. There is really no such thing as a neutral field. It's just neither team's home field.

QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 01:16 PM) good point. That scholarship would become pretty expensive if they had to pay taxes on it. Taxes are taken out of scholarships. The students don't "pay" them however the amount of the scholarship must be higher to cover it. -
QUOTE (IlliniKrush @ Jan 28, 2014 -> 09:19 AM) Control the weather there too, if you'd like. It'd make for better football. And your answer is, as if you couldn't figure this out, one team earned home field advantage there, and the Super Bowl is always a neutral site game. When you can control weather and field conditions and fan environment, you should, as it's better football. I know I'm in the minority here but I disagree. Any players can play well in a sterile controlled environment. I like to see the best players over come the adversity and prove they can adapt to win. While the quarterback is the most important player, can he lead the team to a win in adverse conditions. I like to see do things they aren't normally asked to do and see if they are great players or just someone who can operate when things are good. This is just my opinion and preference of what I like to see. I know most people disagree but it's just a preference.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 02:22 PM) Every single one that is worried about the money. Now tell me again why KW decided he didn't want to have a good farm system. Because he put all of the money that JR allowed in the budget to the MLB team and didn't allocate it to drafting and development. It's not the fans worry , it's whatever budget JR creates regardless of how much the Sox have.

QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Jan 27, 2014 -> 02:11 PM) Avasail Garcia was acquired for an over 30 pitcher with an injury history. A pitcher then when healthy was much better than any option out there. If Peavy signed for what he was worth it would have been near 20 mil. If you can get any of the FA pitchers out there to sign for significantly less than the worth say 8 mil than it would be worth it. Peavy was much more valuable than any of the current FAs. Not to mention Peavy was just 30 these guys will be 32-34.
