  1. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 09:30 AM) If we turn around and trade Anderson for an average prospect, that makes the Vazquez for Young trade turn from horrible to one of the worst in the franchise's history. If you are the GM you have to do what you think is the best for the team. You can't consider "what could look like the worst rade in franchise history" If you follow theat theory of only looking and worrying about how things are perceived in the past you will never be successful at anything. This doesn't mean it's not the worst trade, it just means who can't worry about it. If KW did that he would never make another move after trading for Todd Ritchie!!!
  2. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 02:26 PM) Please let it be LF. ^^^^^^^^^
  3. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 01:59 PM) You aren't really comparing the 2 are you?? Ichiro plays 5 times as much as Matsuzaka, the bid wasn't anywhere near this egregious (and the contract wasn't nearly as crazy as this one will be), and to say that is really beyond apples and oranges. Just throwing out 50 millon dollars up front because somebody might be a stud is stupid ass business. I am comparing the two. While I agree the amount of money is ridiculous, How much is a potential top of the rotation starter worth? I don't care if Ichiro plays 5 times as much the game is still pitching. If you want to play the "how much he plays game" how many pitches is the pitcher involved in and how many pitches is a right fielder involved in? The game is pitching. I agree I wouldn't have payed that much for a team with a budget like ours but it is very tempting to get a pitcher like that for a team that the budget seems to not be a limitation.
  4. QUOTE(fathom @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 01:34 PM) HUGE difference between Japanese hitter and pitcher though. Japanese pitchers are notorious for the incredible amount of pitches they throw early in their career, and many of them lose their velocity sooner rather than later (compared to pitchers from USA/Dominican, etc.). I understand this. However a possible stud pitcher in his prime is also more worth the risk to obtain than any hitter. In order to reap great rewards often great risks must be taken. (unlike the Sox drafting philosophy)
  5. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 12:38 AM) I'd say that was a potential 30 million dollar waste if they did. I want no part of a Japanese player that has done NOTHING in the U.S. that I have to "bid" on just to get a shot to sign. The Ichiro bid really backfired for Seattle.
  6. QUOTE(Jimbo @ Nov 15, 2006 -> 12:55 AM) Crisp was hurt most of the year, and did his best to come back, despite the injury. Pods, as told to me by my Milwaukee friends will be a bust after year 1. seems about right. Well it's a good thing Pods didn't have off season surgery or any other groin injuries otherwise you could you the same excuses for him
  7. QUOTE(whitesoxfan101 @ Nov 14, 2006 -> 03:44 PM) Him and Gary Matthews are going to love Texas forever. A couple of early 30 somethings who can't hit but are really good defenders have a great year in a hitting ballpark and get way overpaid. He'll fit right in with the Cubs though, light hitter, doesn't walk much, strikes out a ton. I don't think of DeRosa as a really good defender. As a matter of fact I would say he is an average 2B and below average at the other positions he has played such as SS, 3B or the OF.
  8. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Nov 13, 2006 -> 07:31 PM) Wasn't he supposedly hurt in the 2nd half of 2005 as well? He had a whole off-season to get healthy, and like you said, he saw very little time in ST, and "looked hurt" all season. So why should a team trying to win it all in 2007 count on a guy that hasnt been at full health since July of 2005? I just have never really been a fan of Podsednik, and the "Podsednik Adventure" needs to come to an end. He had surgery in the off season remember. This is why he came into ST less than 100%.
  9. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 13, 2006 -> 11:28 AM) And Choo, and Hafner, and Martinez, and Sizemore...eek. Exactly!!! The AL central is going to be tough next year. I don't think the wild card will come from our division becasue thre will be 4 teams in great competition.
  10. QUOTE(SoxHawk1980 @ Nov 13, 2006 -> 11:13 AM) The talk of any team giving up anything of value for Podsednik is a joke. Every team in the majors has a minor leaguer who can do what Pods does. Podsednik has become a zero-tool player. He can't hit for average (or get on base with any frequency). He has no power. His OF defense stinks. He has no arm. And his speed/baserunning/base stealing has gone from great to merely above average. He is a below replacement level player who is no longer particularly good at any aspect of the game. Is some team going to give up anything of value for him when the best you can say about him is that he used to be fast? I hate it when fans come up with fantastics scenarios where we can get something good in exchange for crap. Could this be due to the injuries sustained last year and he will return to the "great" level you said he was before? After all he's only about 30 and shouldn't have lost his physical speed yet. Not that I think he is a great player by any means but I'm just asking.
  11. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Nov 11, 2006 -> 10:48 PM) Problem here is he opted out of the remaining 33million, 3yrs left on his contract with Los Angeles. Obviously, he's seeking more years and (likely) more money over that term. Considering the teams you've listed as interested, I would be SHOCKED if Williams negotiated with Boras for J.D. Drew. I really hope this issue with Boras resolves itself someday. It's becoming annoying immediately scratching out free agents or draft picks because he's representing the player. We're continually distancing ourselves from some of the best players in the game. Sure, we drafted Joe Crede; but that was more than 5 years ago. It will never go away. Boras is great at his job in getting clubs to overvalue his players and overpaying for them. The Sox operate within a budget and will not get suckered into this. KW knows the value of his players and will compensate them fairly.
  12. QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 11, 2006 -> 09:31 AM) I place almost no value in individual prospects, so get a bunch of them and hope one pans out. There is no guarantee that any of these guys will make the 25 man roster, or once there have any impact. If we are scoring who wins this trade in 2007, I'd say Detroit. Perhaps down the road, if one of these guys pans out, the trade will need to be rethought. But I don't think the Yankees lineup is better without him. These guys didn't play for the Tigers. He's an upgrade for what they had. For that, I like this trade for Detroit. Maybe not, but the team will be better without him.
  13. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 10, 2006 -> 01:44 PM) Because I do not believe that the rehab will be as effective. I have seen players do just rehab work only to revert to surgery eventually. From my own experience with herniated disks, I always felt like the rehab work was a temporary solution. It really can go either way. Depending on the extent of the injury and the activity of the client. Part of the picture people are missing is that he would still have 2-3 months of rehab after the surgery as well. Surgery is not a cure for this problem either.
  14. The surgery they described is a microdiscectomy. If this is the procedure the disc herniation they are concerned about must not be very serious. This was a procedure made famous when Joe Montana had it done and was back on the field in less than 2 months. It sounds very encouraging...as long as Crede does the work.
  15. QUOTE(Texsox @ Nov 8, 2006 -> 07:50 PM) Yeah, too bad Bush couldn't overcome "crooked ass, idiotic politicians of Louisiana" and lead. If the President of the United States gets sidetracked by "crooked ass, idiotic politicians of Louisiana" then he isn't much of a leader. Do you seriously believe that Reagan would have allowed "crooked ass, idiotic politicians of Louisiana" to stop him? But, taking your position then, you must give credit to the honest, intelligent politicians of New York instead of Bush for the response to 9/11. And that makes sense. I always wondered how he could have been so great at one, and sucked so bad at the other. This was a matter for the legal system. legally the Federal Government couldn't do anything until the State governemnt declared the disaster and asked for help. This is where the delay occurred. QUOTE(southsideirish71 @ Nov 8, 2006 -> 11:42 PM) I think they wont be able to control themselves. They will put Conyers in a position that will allow him to move forward with articles of impeachment. He has been working on mock proceedings for years now, what in the name of god do you think he will do when he gets a chance. I am just waiting for when they start to tax the living crap out of everything. I love it how democratic strategists are on TV trying to paint Pelosi as a centrist. I have even seen some posters in Fillibuster try to do the same. If she is a centrist, Bush is a liberal. No truer words have ever been written. She is so far off the liberal deep end that the next few years are going to be an interesting dogfight, maybe even within the Dem party. On that vein of thought since up delerious and up the my vomiting son, what does everyone think of many of the elected Dem representatives being ex-military and fairly conservative. I think this could lead to dissention in the Democratic rank with the leadership being an old guard very liberal group.
  16. QUOTE(Balta1701 @ Nov 8, 2006 -> 08:02 PM) No, you did not say anything about Carl, but when you imply even remotely that Jim Thome had anything to do with our decrease in speed this year compared to last year, it begs the question as to what exactly Thome did. The decrease in speed-runs this year was due overwhelmingly to 1 man, and 1 man alone: Scott Podsednik. Rowand was not a huge base stealing threat, although he got a few, and Iguchi was still here. If Scott had been able to steal at a 75-80% clip, like he should have, then whether or not Thome was in the lineup, he'd still have been running. The reason we had to start keeping him at first base was that he was getting thrown out too much and that was hurting Thome's RBIs, not that Thome was somehow keeping him from running. Basically theis type of offense stopped when Pods injured his leg in Spring Training. He couldn't run or push off with the leg all year long. The Sox made a grave error in bringing him back too soon to begin the year to try to get a WS repeat and Ozzie knew they couldn't do it without him. He wasn't healthy all year and was tentative.

    Mono

QUOTE(Kid Gleason @ Nov 6, 2006 -> 07:26 PM) If twins get mono, is it called "stereo"??? Thanks, Emo
  18. QUOTE(jackie hayes @ Nov 8, 2006 -> 03:58 PM) You were responding to a post about using him out of the pen. I understand the reluctance to use two first-time starters. A lot of uncertainty there, okay. But I think there's also a lot of plain anti-knuckler opposition, and that I don't understand. chicks dig the heat nothing else matters
  19. QUOTE(RockRaines @ Nov 6, 2006 -> 03:17 PM) Liriano=Kerry Wood. Lots of talent, no way to fix horrible delivery. The only way to get him to stay in the league is make him drop the slider. The twins have some holes to fill and I really hope they bring in Suppan or Weaver or someone of that nature that we can absolutely kill. You don't need to drop the slider. You just need to throw it properly. The problem usually is that the pitcher drops down to to get more slide and less drop on the pitch. This is what puts the extra stress on the elbow.
  20. QUOTE(Flash Tizzle @ Nov 4, 2006 -> 08:47 PM) Wait, injury to Logan? Haven't heard anything about this. I personally believe Shines' firing gave the players an easy excuse to leave. Can you honestly imagine a group of 23-24 year olds telling themselves, "our manager from AAA was let go by La Guaira-- during winterball--that's bulls***! CMON, LET'S STAND TOGETHER AND FIGHT THIS INJUSTICE! YEEEAAAAHHH!!" Really, if this were the case, I don't blame them. Honestly, would any of you want to spend a significant portion of the offseason in Venezuela playing baseball? Even if it were to improve certain deficiencies within your game? I've always been under the impression winterball is rather useless. Their competition is comprised of fringe talent and other assortment of crap. At best, it helps improve a players value; at worst, their confidence is shot. Actually spending winters in the Carribean or Mexican leagues is quite fun. as long as you don't take it too seriously with the living conditions. It's usually a bunch of young guys making decent money here (rich down there) and most of the trips are a blast. It's a lot more fun than the minor leagues in the States.
  21. QUOTE(Tony82087 @ Nov 3, 2006 -> 04:34 PM) This from MLBTradeRumors.com The part about the shoulder injury expalins alot. Frequently pitcher's with shoulder problems will drop down abit to take the strain off. However, this usually adds strain to the UCL and it can go. The reverse also happens where pitcher's with chronic elbow problems raise thier arm angle and add stress to the shoulder ala Kerry Wood. Everyone has a unique pitching style and even though we may try to correct it, sometimes the pitcher has built up an area (shoulder) and when you take the stress and move it to an area where it has not been built up over time (elbow), the tissue can't handle it. Either way pitching puts a great deal of stress on the tissues and most arms can't handle it. Pitchers from eras gone by will say "we used to throw all the time and we never had these problems. " Well back then pitcher's whose arms couldn't handle it were weeded out in the minors and only the ones with the ability to handle the stress made it. In today's MLB we bring them up faster and try to correct the problems with surgery. Alot of times I think the arms just weren't meant to handle it and they weren't weeded out. Why could Nolan Ryan still throw in the mid to upper 90s in his 40s while most other can never do it. Who knows. Sorry for the rant but I had this discussion with an old time MLB pitcher the other day and he insists "we were tougher and just founbd a way to get through it." This is a good board to vent with.
  22. QUOTE(Chisoxfn @ Nov 3, 2006 -> 12:01 PM) I don't think thats all that likely. He's have to make serious adjustments to get to that. I laughed last year when everyone said he'd do better than Aaron offensively. Aaron had his flaws at the plate but he's a superior offensive player to Anderson (at this point in time). Defensively Anderson was damn good but Rowand is still top notch as well and if we had Rowand he would have been out there (had he stayed healthy). I'm not saying we shouldn't have traded Rowand though, so don't put me in that category. But I laugh at all this blind optimism about Anderson. I disagree. Rowand is a 270-280 hitter with 15-20 HR per year. I think that is very attainable for BA. It was a rookie year. He'll adjust just like all players must do to be successful. BA's 2nd half ave was 257. Rowand hit about 262 for the year limited to the nose and ankle injuries. BA's defense will also be better than Rowand over the course of his career.
  23. QUOTE(chimpy2121 @ Nov 2, 2006 -> 04:49 PM) How the hell did Hunter win again? The Gold Gloves seem like a joke. It's always a joke. Remember the year Raffy Palmiero won and played only 28 games at 1st? The rest of his games were at DH. So people wonder if a DH should be an MVP but we know they can win a GG.
  24. It kills me to say it but this would probably be the only move they could make that would sour my loyalty to the Sox. That being said the only way KW would trade for him is to be involved in a deal with another team where the Sox would not end up with him. KW is not stupid enough to want a player like him.
  25. QUOTE(SoxFan76 @ Oct 30, 2006 -> 11:49 AM) I'd say the chances are very high that he has 2 healthy years in a row. This is a guy who was never really injured until late in his career. I say after this off season he will be in better shape than the past 2 years, because if you ask me he wasn't fully healed even in 2006. Yet he still put up massive numbers. Just look at him run...and while Frank is far from the athlete he used to be, he should be looking better on the base paths in 07. I'm a Frank Thomas homer, I admit it. But I think he will have another great year in 2007. wherever that may be. If you watched Thomas this year you would've noticed that he wasn't healthy. He did play a full season but not at a healthy level. He still cannot run on that foot. He limped and hobbled his way through the year to get a good contract and a ring I think. If you look at his stats they show it as well. He scored only 77 runs and had only 11 doubles. Both of which are significantly lower than any season where he had 500 at bats. This tells me he couldn't run to stretch doubles and couldn't score from 2nd where he could if he could run. Thomas will always hit but his days of being able to run and do other things he should are over. I wouldn't sign him to a multi-year dwal as who knows how he will be able to handle it. That being said I'm a huge Thomas fan and can't wait to see that 500th HR no matter what uniform it's in (as long as it's not against the Sox)
