  1. QUOTE (Rooftop Shots @ Sep 12, 2008 -> 05:52 PM) Also in 1967 we had a blizzard. in 78' it kept coming and coming all winter, but in 67' it all came at once. A guy across the street from me had a heart attack that day, and the ambulance couldn't get down the street, so they carried him on a stretcher all the way down the block in a ton of snow to the ambulance on the main highway. Incredibly.............he made it through OK. I remember that '67 blizzard well. John Coleman (Channel 7 weatherman) started out by predicting snow flurries. I was 9 years old at the time. Personally, I had a blast!!!!

I thought this thread was going to be about moon stages or someone being nostalgic. Waxing like you are talking never cross my mind when I read the thread title.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 13, 2008 -> 08:19 AM) dumbass. One of these days, a reporter covering a hurricane is going to get decapitated by a flying metal sign and the media will go "oh crap. this is dangerous. we shouldn't have people out there". I think it says a lot that you found someone's misfortune to be hilarious.

September 11th will always be meaningful to me, but for different reasons. My late son was born on September 11, 1981.
  5. McCain Strengths: 1. Compartively moderate politically 2. Ability and willingness to 'reach across the ailse' 3. Experience - both politically and militarily McCain Weaknesses 1. Not an inspiring orator 2. His age 3. Having a relatively inexperienced running mate (see #2) Obama Strengths 1. Master orator 2. He's black. He'll get a lot of votes for this reason alone. 3. Experienced running mate Obama Weaknesses 1. Minimal experience 2. He's black. He'll lose a lot of votes for this reason alone. 3. His extreme liberalness. I wasn't attempting to evaluate what type of POTUS they'd be if elected. I was looking at electability. Edit: I changed #3 on Obama's weaknesses. That's one I meant to include, but it momentarily slipped my mind.
  6. After this thing is wrapped up, I think it would be interesting for everyone to come to this thread and post their personal lists. But, please wait till it's finished.
  7. QUOTE (The Critic @ Sep 12, 2008 -> 02:51 PM) It's what you win to host a one-plame gayoff...... wait....what??? Well played. You got quite a loud, extended laugh from me.
  8. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 13, 2008 -> 02:08 AM) Joe Crede is a legend ... in my mind at least. If you take the 2005 stretch run and the three post season series, this guy was the Sox MVP for that time period, imho.
  9. QUOTE (DrunkBomber @ Sep 12, 2008 -> 06:48 PM) A lot of the time politicians will use the excuse that they cant go around and round up all of the illegal immigrants which is true, but if you punish the enablers severely than it will be harder for them to stay here. I think if an employer is caught employing illegals he should be harshly fined and on an escalated scale. I also think housing should require proof of citizenship. Then, for fun, maybe go to the illegal immigrant rallies and arrest them all. Im sure if drug dealers held a rally that cops would go there to arrest them. When talking about punishing enablers severly, I believe sanctuary cities should be included.
  10. In an attempt to civilize the 'Buster to a small degree, I'm opening this thread to discuss ONLY the issues that will affect our nation and the world. No snarkiness allowed. If you can't post without being snarky post it another thread. Some of us want to discuss things that ARE important. This thread is reserved from those people and any and all issues. Global warming? OK Foriegn policy? Yep This not for linking up to an article that you happen to think is amusing or advantageous to your side, unless you need to in order to prove a point made in a previous post that has been challenged. Fair enough, guys? Can we do this? Edit to add: Mods and admins, let's police this one diligently.
  11. QUOTE (NorthSideSox72 @ Sep 12, 2008 -> 07:30 AM) Bolded part is an excellent point. A lot of the snark happening is NOT coming from either campaign - its coming from supporters, followers, and party reps. Agreed. Great idea. I'm going to take a shot at it.
  12. QUOTE (greg775 @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 10:42 PM) That's a great way to put it. Maybe it's the name Konerko like Grabowski. ... or Dybzinski
  13. QUOTE (BearSox @ Sep 11, 2008 -> 06:03 AM) Neither are all that great of options, but Broadway is a lot better than Richard, IMO. Besides, who else you want starting? Carrasco, maybe, but he has probably been our best reliever for the past couple of months. The Tigers are a heavily right handed hitting team, which is why it's Broadway instead of Richard. Plus, it sets up the rotation for the Minnesota series.
  14. Didn't we have a 1B at Charlotte that just tore that league up this year? Why isn't he with the Sox now? If Swisher goes down, who plays 1B?

QUOTE (Steff @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 09:29 AM) Usually lodging, sometimes meals, never travel even when you fly the same flight. Whenever I have had to travel, all lodging, transportation and two meals a day (including tips) have been reimbursed.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 09:10 AM) The government isnt sending Obama back to chicago to see his family. and Alaska isnt sending the kids to see mommy. That's where i see the difference. If Obama were traveling home to "meet the people" or whatever you want to say politicians do, then that's totally cool with me. I just dont see how sending the kids to and from home is "state business" worthy of billing the state. Oh hell, I should have looked at who I was quoting. I withdraw my question and will let it end here. Carry on with your agenda.

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Sep 9, 2008 -> 09:01 AM) no no no. Only if he is billing the government for personal transit back home every few weeks to see his family. My problem is billing the government to go home and see family or for family to come see you. Hell, even in private business you get reimbursed for travel expenses, lodging, meals and costs to and from wherever they need to send you. What's the problem here?
  18. I'm going by memory here on who I picked in this poll a few days ago, with my reasoning. Catcher - I picked Carlton Fisk because, well, he was Pudge. First Base - I went with Dick Allen because he was a force. Correction, FORCE. I remember Banks as an old, slow 1B with good hands and supple wrists that allowed him the longevity to reach 512 dingers. In retrospect, I probably should have given the nod to Konerko. Second Base - Fox won an MVP, as did Sandburg. Fox made it to a World Series, Ryno didn't. Fox was a magician with bat while Ryno had power he was just very good. Defensively, I don't remember Fox. Ryno was great at making the routine plays, and that has value, but I went with Nellie. Shortstop - I'm not old enough to remember Banks as a SS, but he did get two MVP's I believe. Appling never even crossed my mind, my bad. I went with Little Looie because I know what he brought to a game with his defense and speed. I probably should've went with Banks based on the MVP awards, but was partial toward Aparicio. He was one of my favorites a child, so I won't apologize. Third Base - Ron Santo. To me, this is no contest. Left Field - Minnie Minoso. Not much to back this pick up with, so I'm open to discussion. Center Field - I went with Jim Landis, but it could have been Jim Rivera or even Ken Berry as far as I'm concerned. Lance Johnson even crossed my mind. I'm sure I'm forgetting about the obvois choice here. Griffey doesn't qualify, imo. Right Field - Billy Williams. He had a Griffey-esque swing (in Jr's prime) against a much less diluted collective MLB pitching staff. RHP starter - I went with Fergie Jenkins. He won 20 or more for 5 years in a row. Don't make this a forum for aguing wins is a lousy measure a pitcher. Maddux twirled most of his magic in Altanta. If you are going pick based on Chicago, you might as well give the nod to Lamar Hoyt. LHP starter - Billy Pierce. Compare his numbers to a HOF lefty from his era, Whitey Ford. RP - I went with Big Bad Bobby Jenks. Gossage did his stuff elsewhere for the most part. I haven't checked the details, but Sutter was in Chicago about as long as Jenks has been, I think. Jenks played a major role in bringing a championship to Chicago. Sutter, eh ... didn't. DH - Frank. Nuff said.
  19. That ballpark is enclosed on all sides. If fact, I was stunned when I walked into it the first time. The stands block any breeze there might be, and the heat down there can be just be oppresive. I fully believe the Rangers second half fades are a direct result of the long hot summers. While people are wearing coats to see the Sox at the Cell in April, the Rangers are playing in hot humid weather. It adds up over the course of a season.
  20. QUOTE (Tony82087 @ Sep 7, 2008 -> 12:04 PM) Danks has also had trouble getting out of the 4th inning lately. Last night was huge for numerous reasons. What you say is true. Still, I'm not going to expect a loss.
  21. QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 7, 2008 -> 09:21 AM) Agreed. It's going to be a BS lineup, so last night's W was huge. Today's a game I count on losing and hope we can steal one. Minny's going to win today. The Angels are also playing a day game after a 15 inning night game, and they have to travel after the game. They also have a cushion so they can rest their regulars if they choose to. I'm not counting on losing this game at all.
  22. QUOTE (Princess Dye @ Sep 7, 2008 -> 11:51 AM) Sometimes you make yourself disinterested so as to brace for the let down when a team just isnt good enough to win it all. That said, a Cardinals fan who did that in 06 wouldve significantly hurt how much enjoyment they'd get from the final result. So you dont want to do that unless you're sure yr bad. This is what I do w/ the Chicago Bears most years. I had to laugh at your response. I totally understand and agree with everything you said.

QUOTE (kapkomet @ Sep 7, 2008 -> 09:19 AM) Oh sure. He doesn't even do anything anymore. He has his servants do it all. In all seriousness, I'd appreciate getting that same text because usually I can at least isolate whether it's the server co. or the software pretty quickly. I'll AIM you my stuff. You, my friend, are a Godsend to Soxtalk. I'm sorry we never had the chance to meet for that beer.
  24. QUOTE (ChiSox35 @ Sep 6, 2008 -> 11:23 PM) I guess my question was with over 3 weeks left in the regular season, even if it would take more to heal and come back, would Quentin be eligible even if it were to happen in the middle of a playoff series? I haven't seen anything about him hitting the DL and I suspect that is because it would serve no purpose (in terms of roster spot) with rosters being expanded. I'm not sure if I'm right in thinking that, so I wonder- Would DL'ing him somehow make him ineligible? Does he have to be active on the last day of the regular season in order to be on the playoff roster? Again, other than espn.com stories on my lame cell phone, I've been working while this has all been going on, but IIRC Quentin's injury was revealed after callups (who are not eligible for playoffs). If he's not ready to start the postseason, would we be able to replace him with someone not on the roster before callups? (mayhaps a Mac?) Otherwise, would he be able to sit (not officially inactive or DL'd) until he's ready, even if that time happens to be in the middle of a playoff series? Lastly, if that was the case, would the team be willing to save a playoff roster spot for someone who is injured and unsure when he will be able to return? I don't know if we'll see this guy in '08 again either, and it's a damn shame. Luckily for us Griffey and Konerko have found their bats, and Uribe is a better third baseman than Joe Crede, both sides of the ball. It's still very early in their callups, but Mac and Wass have been picking up a flailing Carrasco, and Liney is back. 2.5 game lead, perhaps we have it in us. Where I had become all but disinterested in the season after that dismal road trip, it's suddenly turned into a good book which started slow but drew you in and wouldn't let go (War and Peace?). A club dealing with adversity always makes for a good watch (albeit life shortening if it's your own). How can you be disinterested in a first place team if you are a fan of the team? If the Sox were 3 back today, I'd still be interested. In fact, I might even be obsessively interested.
  25. Mac has the talent and COULD be a huge addition. He also has been something of a head case when it comes to throwing strikes. Like the rest you, I'm sure, I'm hoping for the best.
