Chicago 2016?
Another question .... can Chicago match or out do Beijing? They spent 40 billion dollars on the games.

2008 White Sox Catch-All Thread
The rules for this game are not any different than any other game. If a player was in the game and has been replaced, he's ineligble. If a player hasn't been in the game, he been inserted for any player that isn't on the roster. Pinch hit, pinch run, defensive replacement or a new pitcher. It's not all that difficult to understand.

WS WINNA!
QUOTE (chitownsportsfan @ Aug 24, 2008 -> 08:57 PM) I have no problem with Cox rolling the dice in that situation. The chance that Cabrera gets a hit is less than 30%. The chance that the Rays f*** up the throw and tag is greater than that, albeit probably not by much, but it's still the right decision. Making a pressure throw and tag is not easy, and we saw that today. Agreed. The throw, the catch and the tag have to happen with any screw ups. In that situation, going for it was the right call.

I'd love to see One Dog batting lead off for the 2008 White Sox.

Scott's homer was one of the most magical moments in Sox history. Rowand and Anderson's reactions just added to moment.

25 years ago, Jerry Dybzinski made a baserunning blunder that is still brought up from time to time even now. So, Willie Harris pinch hit for Garcia and eventually came around to score the most important run that any White Sox fan can remember. Yes, I can definitely understand how he made the favorites list.

2008 Beijing Summer Olympics Thread
QUOTE (jackie hayes @ Aug 23, 2008 -> 09:03 AM) I don't think that's a good comparison. You just don't see crossover between sprinters and hurdlers, but crossover between strokes is fairly common in swimming (maybe in part b/c the medley is a popular event, or maybe just because youth clubs need to fill out lanes with a fixed number of swimmers). Swimmers might specialize in particular strokes (as Phelps is strongest by far in free and fly), but many will be at least 'pretty good' in some or all of the rest. Bolt, imo, looked like a hs varsity athlete at a junior high track meet. He looked like he needed a higher level of competition. And of course there isn't any, which is why it was such an awesome thing to watch. There were some races where Phelps looked like a man among boys. Some he won by the skin of his teeth. As impressive as Bolt has been, I have to give the nod to Phelps.

What do you wear to games?
QUOTE (whitesoxbrian @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 09:45 PM) My AJ away replica and my away replica that has CHAMPS 05 on the back is with the authentic lettering. That 1 black layer is downright ugly. I've got an authentic road jersey with CHAMPIONS 05 on it.

Greatest reliever seasons ever
QUOTE (YASNY @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 12:25 PM) Yes, but Gagne was evening the score so to speak. And he was only 'even' against the Sosa's and McGuire's that were out there. Against the rest ..... ? Yes , I know the years don't match up with the players, but the point is made.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 12:22 PM) I think 90 ECK was amazing, but what Gagne did was in an even more offensive era than 1990. Yes, but Gagne was evening the score so to speak. And he was only 'even' against the Sosa's and McGuire's that were out there. Against the rest ..... ?

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 11:04 AM) Willie F***ing Harris scored the only run in the final game of the 2005 season. That's got to count for something. He also got the pinch hit base hit to set up that run.

QUOTE (Pants Rowland @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 01:05 PM) And those reasons make me think they will not use the off days remaining to skip 5th spot in the rotation, whoever that 5th man will be. They might be able to work one skip, but you'd have some starters working on short rest because the calendar doesn't exactly match the rotation schedule.

QUOTE (Felix @ Aug 22, 2008 -> 09:38 AM) That certainly wasn't my purpose, as I've enjoyed reading these. I apologize if that did happen as a result of me. And I didn't mean to turn it into anything else. However, if I'm reading these things and something is said that I disagree with, I'm going to say so. I don't think I did anything out of line and I thought the whole purpose of these forums was to promote discussion about baseball (and other things). Now if I were to start talking politics in this thread I could see how it was out of line, but when I was merely talking about the worthiness of saves in a thread about the guy who holds the saves record, which doesn't seem off-topic or out of place at all to me. Ok, I can appreciate your point of view. But the intent, and effort, that's been put into these threads kind of leads me to believe that this wasn't the really the place to pick on specific point. You may not have intended for it turn into a 'hijack' situation and I can understand how that can happen. But at some point in time, it should become apparent that's its time pull back. In fact, a great thread to argue the point you made would have been the Frankie Rodriguez thread in the Diamond Club forum. Your point is not the issue here, imo. It's where you chose to express it. Yet, I can understand that you didn't foresee things happening the way that they did. So, I'm not trying to condemn you but maybe have you take more things into consideration than just the specific point. And I really hope you understand where I'm coming from here. Edit to add: Felix, it wasn't just because of you. I didn't want to imply that either and if I did, I apologize.

QUOTE (Felix @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 10:53 PM) I do think saves are a terrible stat to use because they discredit players on teams that suck or that tend to blow others out. I didn't mean it to bash Thigpen, nor was I trying to degrade what Thigpen did. However, the sentence was initially written as fact, which is something I disagreed with. Milkman basically covered it. Stat worthiness has been discussed on Soxtalk ad nausem, and will continue to be discussed. But you take one sentence out of a "favorite players" bio because you happen to disagree with and start sniping. The man was enjoying writing these bio's and had stepped up and volunteered to help write as many he can. Now, he's washed his hands of the whole damn thing and I don't blame him one iota. This thread, and the others like it are meant to light and fun. There are plenty of threads where discussion and disagreement can take place and be totally appropriate, but this wasn't one them. Basically, by turning into a discussion on the value of a save to judge a player, you hijacked the thread. Oh, and Milkman, before you jump all over me for this post, I took into consideration what you said about me being critical of negative posts and decided you may have a valid point so I backed off and have refrained from doing that quite so much. However, I couldn't let this go without putting in my two cents. It's not so much the negative posts themselves, it's the thread that they occured and the time and effort being put into these threads by various people to make this a fun and enjoyable series of threads.

2008 Chicago Cubs Catch-All Thread
QUOTE (Brian @ Aug 21, 2008 -> 10:52 AM) Another reason I hate Cub fans.... Today at work, a guy I know who is a Cubs fans and he knows I am a Sox fan, comes up to me and says "Imagine how big of a star Carlos Quentin would be if he played for the Cubs." And he waited for me to respond like this would be an intelligent baseball conversation. So I replied sarcastically, "Yeah, if he played for the Cubs, he may have made the All Star team, oh wait. If he was with the Cubs, he'd be the leader for the MVP, oh wait." The dude did get me and said that if he was on the Cubs, he would of been voted in the All Star game by the fans, which may have been possible. I just hate when a Cub fan talks down to me like that. And there's always the "Your GM wasn't smart enough to get a probable MVP for a Class A firstbaseman" option.

QUOTE (Chisoxfn @ Aug 20, 2008 -> 11:23 PM) You sons of b****es. I'm on extra tape delay out here and I stumbled into this thread only to get the volleyball ruined. Damn it. Kinda reminds me of a certain hockey game I was watching in 1980, when I got a call from my then father-in-law and he says, "Hey, did you hear we beat the Russians?" I literally screamed after hanging up the phone.

Former Sox player Tim Hulett's son, Tug, played today for the M's. I couldn't help but make the connection to Tug and Tim McGraw.
