QUOTE (Gregory Pratt @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 12:18 PM) There's the problem. People are often on pace for numbers that they may or may not be able to reach. Anderson has not hit a single homerun against a right-hander this year and playing everyday he'd see more righties than lefties. His split stats are a little weird. But I watch him and he still has an ugly swing and ugly approach. I guess that if he played a 500 at-bat season he'd come nowhere near 25 homeruns unless he somehow turned into a man who simply mashes lefties completely. His stats say fluke and so do my eyes, watching him. I see a guy who's run into some pitches against bad lefties and all his other numbers, especially against lefties, suck. I'd like to see how many plate appearances he's had this year against pitchers from each side of the rubber. I tried to find it but was unsuccessful.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 12:07 PM) But...Favre is also in NY because he was unable to adapt and make a decision based on anyone else's schedule but his own. But ... since you used that word ... did Farve get the idea that the Packers were ready to move on and did that affect his decision to retire? Did Farve then decide he's not ready to hang 'em up based on the Packers view of the situation?

QUOTE (Athomeboy_2000 @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 12:08 PM) she doesn't have a flag pin pinned to her breast. She's clearly not patriotic. I couldn't have put it better. -
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 01:09 PM) Anderson has 7 home runs in 143 at bats already this season. That's a 25 home run pace on a 500 at bat season. The stolen bases certainly aren't there, but it's easy to see Anderson still putting up 25+ dingers, he just has to keep up his current pace. And if ..... he was playing regularly, he may do more than that.

Here's the way I look at Baines issue. Andre Dawson was a better all around player than Harold and he's not in yet. Dawson didn't have the DH position to fall back on. He won an MVP award while playing for a last place team. He also had the turf issue in Montreal as a factor in his knees deteriorating. If Dawson makes it, and I think he should, then I'll take another look at Harold. But Andre was just a better all around ballplayer than Harold, imho.

QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 11:56 AM) great story. I heard Fisk tell that story on the radio one day. Of course, he cleaned it up, but he told it such a way that you knew what happened.
-
QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 11:55 AM) Most hits and RBIs of anyone not in HoF. All the players ahead of him on those lists are in, and many players behind him are in. And hits and RBIs are not obscure stats. So a Sox board is the only place fans could make that argument. He's a long shot, and if he had the same stats in 3 or 4 less years, he'd be a pretty solid pick. How has Harold done in the voting? I think that would be the thing that tells the story?

QUOTE (ChiSox_Sonix @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 12:49 PM) Gonna be honest, i've never heard of this guy before right now Here's a short little Gary Peters story for you. He was with Red Sox and was getting roughed up one day. This rookie catcher comes out to mound to talk to him and Peters, being the veteran pitcher that he was at the time said "WTF do you want?" At that point Carlton Fisk just turned around and walked back to his position.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 11:45 AM) I agree but you still see the occasional poll on sports websites and hear talk radio discussion about the issue. That's just flotsom and jetsom ... give them something to talk about. Frank Thomas was one of the greatest RH hitters of all time.
-
QUOTE (BigSqwert @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 12:43 PM) As long as I hear people questioning Big Frank's HOF credentials because he was primarily a DH then there's no way Baines is in....and I loved watching Baines. Frank is so in.
-
QUOTE (Kalapse @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 12:36 PM) Then why can't Jim Rice get in? Compare his 162 game averages to Harold Baines. Got to say, that's a good question. Edit: Just had a thought. He was such a surly SOB that a lot of writers (voters) won't vote for him.
-
QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 11:15 AM) Then never mention career numbers. His 162 game averages were .289/.356/.465, 22 HR, 93 RBI, 120 OPS+. and he rarely devaited from that. Shame his knees did not hold out, or we would have been talking first ballot or not. If he played for New York or Boston, he'd make it. See Billy Pierce vs. Whitey Ford.

Put an American flag over her face and stand at attention, so to speak, for Ol' Glory. -
QUOTE (CanOfCorn @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 05:42 AM) Illinois Men's and Women's team are going to have their "Illinois Madness" OUTSIDE after the Minnesota football game. Court set up near the South end zone, dunk contest, women's practice, 60,000 fans...great idea! See: Illinois Basketball Madness That's a great idea. Someone in Champaign is thinking outside the, ummm, gym.

Gary Peters was also a pretty good hitter. I remember him being used as a pinch hitter and, iirc, being placed in the lineup as high as 6th. Gary Peters was one of my favorites as I growing up. I hope I didn't forget him on my list.

QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 11:51 AM) "While campaigning in Illinois, John McCain throws out the ceremonial first pitch to White Sox pitcher Mark Buehrle." That was pretty damn good.
-
QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 09:58 AM) Here's your real question. Do you offer him salary arbitration? Again, it depends on the Sox evaluation of Getz.
-
QUOTE (Texsox @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 09:36 AM) I think Frank needs to make the Hall as a DH, then the Veterans Committee, in the future will vote in Baines. I don't think Harold will make it.
-
I think it all depends on the Sox evaluation of Getz. If they feel he step up and be a solid utility guy next year, he's more cost effective. If they don't Uribe will be back. I believe Uribe will be back.

QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 10:17 AM) He played on the Sox opening day, I know I was there to see him. Maybe it was not clear, but I was comparing Griffey playing his first home game, to the White Sox playing their home opener (opening day for the Sox at home). CQ was on the field that day, although Ramirez was not. Okay. I got it now.

QUOTE (DABearSoX @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 08:59 AM) I was about to goto HR today for this reason alone, but dreams do come true, right after getting in today I was informed that my department will be moving floors in a few weeks. So I'll just have to put up with it for a little bit longer. With some of the people I have to put up with on this site, this should be a cake walk... We all know the feeling.
-
QUOTE (Soxbadger @ Aug 7, 2008 -> 09:57 AM) I guess my post should have said a "super star" starter sit on opening day. Pods had 2 good seasons and a lot of meh seasons. The 2008 AL MVP didn't start on Opening Day.

Stolen from an article on the Sox site:

This is a list of 'favorite' Sox players. What makes a player a favorite is subjective and up to the person doing the choosing, using whatever criteria they want. I don't think any choice should be 'called out'. Unless it is Jamie Navarro.

Johnny Danks came up huge when we needed it.
