  1. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 09:23 PM) Exactly. It doesn't mean a lot, so give it out for emotional reasons. I hate giving out things for emotional reasons, as I think emotions and being fired up and all that crap are overrated anyways. Start the best guy in game 1 (although they'll probably start Buehrle game 1 and I won't really care since it doesn't matter anyways).
  2. QUOTE (Balta1701 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 08:50 PM) For emotional reasons...frankly, no. He gets day 2. Why? Peavy is pretty inarguably a better pitcher tham Mark Buehrle (although who pitches game 1 and who pitches game 2 doesn't really mean a whole lot in April, only in October).
  3. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 12:24 PM) I see those years of working with Kotex boy are working out well for Kotex Jr. Cowley isn't in the same zip code as Hineybird. Cowley is definitely a carpet bomber and chiken little at times, but he doesn't hate the White Sox organization and at least occaisonally provides humor.
  4. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 08:37 PM) No way. As long as he was healthy enough to pitch only positives could have come from this. He'll be fired up, the team will be fired up and the fanbase will be fired up about Jake Peavy 2010. If he didn't pitch, it would all still be question marks. There's people on this board who still want Buerhle pitching opening day. Peavy is the best pitcher they have had in a long time. Peavy should for sure be pitching on opening day, although I don't think anybody being "fired up" has any relevance at all. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 08:39 PM) But nobody knew how healthy he was. The ankle and the line drive he took. We now know for certain that those are non-issues and he's 100%. That's true, and it's one less concern this winter.
  5. QUOTE (Dick Allen @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 08:31 PM) For all those who wanted to shut down Peavy, he's showing why he pitched. Now he won't have any doubts coming into Spring Training, and the White Sox are going to be able to market the crap out of him this offseason. If he hadn't pitched, it wouldn't have been as effective. He still should have been shut down (everybody knew how good he is), but it was enjoyable to watch him pitch a few times in our uniform and get a preview of what he'll give us next year.
  6. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Oct 2, 2009 -> 02:22 PM) Game 1. Campbell digs-1 Expect AT LEAST 1 a game. The horse is dead, beaten, pissed on, and thrown in the pond already, but it will continue. As for today's game, Huet certainly wasn't good and was a part of the loss, but IMO the main reason it was lost due to either inablity to finish scoring chances or great goaltending by Vokoun (depending on if you are a glass half empty or half full type of person).
  7. Considering the financial losses Olympics have had recently (I had read some horror stories on how overbudget London already is for instance), losing today might be all bad and I see why the Olympics had it's opponents. But anybody who thinks that this loss will result in improved schools or a balanced budget or a drop in crime or less political corruption is just being ignorant. Today's loss will change absolutely none of that at all. In hinsight, Obama really has to regret going over there because as much as the Olympics aren't overwhelming relevant, he made a fool of himself today. Not so much here in America I don't think (he's not going to lose any votes over this), but moreso in the international community, where he was thought to be invinsible until today.
  8. I'd be somewhat surprised if he's not back. Kotsay is the man that will finally get DeWayne Wise out of this organization, although much later than he should have been.
  9. He's looked better recently, which gives me some semblance of slight hope. And I have to disagree with you SS2K5 on expectations next year, there are going to be expectations with our pitching rotation and the division we're in. Maybe not sky high expectations, but expectations nonetheless.
  10. This might be unfair pressure to put on him, but the whole season really does come down to Huet I believe, and more specifically, how he plays in the playoffs. They are going to be good (exactly how good we don't know, but certainly a top 4 team in the West at minimum IMO) and certainly good enough to be in position to make another deep playoff run. If Huet stands on his head in the playoffs, it could be quite a great time, if not, a lot of people are going to be disappointed. And I am sad that Skille didn't make the team, but i'll trust they know what they are doing there.
  11. This might explain the shenanigans today (although I don't think Mauer was hit).
  12. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Sep 30, 2009 -> 09:13 AM) Argue the point. No need to bring me down without offering a decent rebuttal. Did we or did we not scapegoat Swish last year, the same way the Cubs are doing to Bradley this year? We scapegoated him as a cover up for the real reason we traded him, which was because we wanted (and/or needed) to dump salary, so I think it's a little different. That, and we have nowhere near the resume of demonizing guys to look good in our fanbase and then trading them at lowest value that the Cubs do.
  13. QUOTE (KyYlE23 @ Sep 29, 2009 -> 01:50 PM) Wow, Lou just came out and said that the Cubs will replace Milton Bradley next year. Its one thing that it is common knowledge that the Cubs will try and get rid of him, its another issue entirely to come out and say it. It definitely hurts any (tiny) trade value that Bradley has now that they have come out and said they are going to pawn him off elsewhere That's the Cub way, take a guy and trade him at his absolute lowest value, while at the same time demonizing him on the way out the door in order to gain fan support for the move. It's all about PR there, even with the increased payroll and expectations. On a side note, the Rockies walk off, extra inning win officially eliminated the Cubs from playoff contention tonight, so those who really, really hate the Cubs can sleep easy tonight, as it's now been 101 full years and the streak moves into it's second century.
  14. Bears really haven't played a good game yet, and are 2-1 after finishing maybe their toughest (on paper) 3 game stretch of the season today. Maybe this team has hope after all. And damn, I've seen it several times now and I still can't believe the f***ing play Favre and Greg Lewis combined to make to save the Vikings from a loss.
  15. I am shocked at how good IU appears to be this season. And with the Big 10, once again, appearing to be as bad as it's ever been in football this year, you guys have a shot at having a very nice season. I won't argue today is a painful loss either because you outplayed Michigan IMO overall, the field goals were just killer.
  16. The call in the Michigan/Indiana game was definitely a bad call, but games aren't won and lost on that, plus it's not like that play was even in Michigan territory. In addition, Indiana should have played better defense and/or not settled for 4 field goals in the red zone if they wanted to win.
  17. QUOTE (zenryan @ Sep 27, 2009 -> 12:16 AM) Well today totally sucked but I cant say that I didnt see it coming. We dont have the running backs and O-line to play smash mouth football and thats what we needed today to have any chance. Well OU next week then we can get to some easy games which the team and the fans watching could def. use right about now. The rain absolutely killed you guys today. Not saying you win in ideal conditions, but no way the game goes like that.
  18. What a win for Houston, again, and in probably the best game i've seen this year. Back to back wins on back to back weekends at Oklahoma State and vs. Texas Tech would be really good for any school in America, and certainly for a C-USA team. They BETTER be in a BCS Bowl over Boise State if both teams go undefeated (although TCU won at Clemson today, so they might be a candidate too in that mix, and the Oregon win looks better for Boise by the day). Don't even want to talk about my guys today, NIU did not show up and Illinois might as well start the new coaching search now.
  19. QUOTE (zenryan @ Sep 25, 2009 -> 10:52 PM) USC might have been missing their starting QB but its not like Barkley is some world beater right now. Plus the guy who did start was the starter coming into fall camp. Lane Stadium during the day doesnt scare me but the wet field does. Yeah the 50's and heavy rain forecast should definitely scare you guys. You have the better team, so the neutralizing effect of bad weather helps Tech. In addition to that, with as young and south Florida based as your team is, I wonder how many guys have ever even played in weather that "cold" on Miami's roster.
  20. QUOTE (zenryan @ Sep 25, 2009 -> 10:41 PM) USC started the season ranked 4th and they lost on the road as a 20 point favorite while Ole Miss lost on the road only as a 4.5 point favorite. Maybe Ole Miss was overrated a bit but thats what happens when there's only 3 really good teams(Florida,Texas,Alabama) and the rest is basically a crapshoot. Look at my Hurricanes, they went from unranked to 9th in just 3 weeks. They should be around the 15 range but the lack of great teams have made them 9 in one poll. They'll probably lose tomorrow and there will be another team ranked there that shouldnt be. USC was without their starting QB last week, so that's not a completely fair comparison IMO. And I wouldn't be so dismissive of Miami's chances tomorrow. Even with 3 starting d lineman now out for the Canes, Virginia Tech still has major offensive issues and Jacory is still great. The weather and that stadium will both help Tech though.
  21. QUOTE (Thad Bosley @ Sep 25, 2009 -> 09:37 PM) This game may very well have featured both the ace of our 2010 staff as well as our new closer. I would have a hard time arguing with either of these points.
  22. QUOTE (Capn12 @ Sep 25, 2009 -> 02:13 PM) Overrated? Very much. But lets give credit where it is due. Eric Norwood is a beast of a defensive player in the SEC. Yeah, but Ole Miss is still one of the more overrated #4 teams of recent memory. South Carolina would be awfully good if the Ole' Ballcoach could put together anything resembling a consistently respectable offense because that defense is pretty good (the Georgia game notwithstanding).
  23. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 16, 2009 -> 01:31 PM) Ah there you go. Field Turf when frozen is extremely painful. Those little rubber pellets start actually cutting your skin like a bunch of mini paper cuts. its horrible. Yeah this is one negative to the idea, unless as mentioned the field is kept warm during the winter. NIU doesn't have an IPF for football, and I know practicing on the field turf in the cold has been a major issues when we've made bowls 2 of the past 3 seasons because it's painful to get tackled on when it gets below the mid 30's in temperature.
  24. QUOTE (fathom @ Sep 23, 2009 -> 07:08 PM) Couldn't agree more. I think Ozzie's leaving on his own after next season if the Sox don't make the playoffs. I agree with this, however, I don't know how anybody can expect him to be fired. He's leaving on his own before he's ever fired, and the same could be said for the rest of the coaching staff considering Greg Walker still has a job. Accountability is non existant among the coaching staff. But with the way Ozzie is, I almost think he'd hold himself accountable and leave if it bombs next season (especially since he'd find another job no problem I believe).
