  1. I don't hate Notre Dame to be honest. I just find the overwhelming attention and love they get to be a bit bewildering since most of their students weren't even born the last time the program was dominant and in top form. In that sense, I would compare them to Indiana University basketball. I also think it's a fact that they have a relatively weak schedule, and in similar to 2006 form, I wouldn't be surprised if they carry it all the way to a BCS Bowl, only to get blown out once they arrive.
  2. QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 6, 2009 -> 11:29 AM) Every year they say that ND's schedule is weak, and every year 6 or 7 of the teams on their schedule make bowl games. It hasn't been weak at all the last two years, that (along with Charlie Weis) has played a major role into their play.
  3. It's about time to fire Zook after this season, and bring in somebody with a clue to coach. I still there there is a lot of talent in the program, so 2010 could be a very good season if a coach who knows how to do his job on gameday is hired in Champaign. Yesterday was about as pathetic as it gets for the Illini, because I honestly still don't think that Missouri is all that good (I think Nebraska will win the North). Also, Notre Dame's performance yesterday convinced me that they can go back to the glory days of 2006 this year, beating up on a relative cupcake schedule before they completely embarass themselves in a BCS Bowl against real competition, although their schedule isn't quite as easy as it looks. I'm pretty happy about NIU's overall prospects too, as they played about as bad as they can play for 3 quarters and still ended up 35 yards and a 2 pointer away from overtime at Wisconsin.
  4. QUOTE (knightni @ Sep 6, 2009 -> 10:33 AM) Wow. Patriots are getting a top 5 pick for a guy past his prime. The word "brilliance" isn't brilliant enough to describe their front office. 99 percent of the time, I would agree with you. But this is the Raiders they pantsed, they aren't the first team/people to pants the Raiders and they won't be the last. Yesterday was an interesting day for the NFL as it was cutdown day. The only Bears move I didn't like was keeping Rashied Davis over Brandon Rideau, although I said the same thing last year and obviously they weren't going to cut Davis after having his most productive receiving season in 2008. Nate Vasher should be thanking his lucky stars the Bears defensive backs suck or he might have been cut, and I'm curious who would have been cut had Jones not got hurt (Hunter Hillenmeyer maybe?)
  5. QUOTE (Jordan4life @ Sep 4, 2009 -> 09:09 PM) How does one determine when another teams "quits."? What do you see? What are the signs? Why did the Sox "quit" while another team like the Cubs didn't quit but are just bad? I can't give you hard evidence the Sox have quit other than my opinion (although that doesn't look as smart after 3 wins in a row). The Sox have made major overhauls and improvements to their talent level during this season (even with Peavy hurt), and are still not playing any better somehow. As for the Cubs, the reason I don't think they have quit is I honestly don't think they are underachieving, I just think they are as bad as they have played. Now, to be legitimately THAT bad with a 140 million dollar payroll or whatever they have is a major indictment on Jim Hendry, who should probably be fired.
  6. This pitching rotation is going to be sick next year with a healthy Peavy and either Hudson or Garcia (I hope Hudson) in the 5th spot. Just build even a decent lineup, bullpen, and defense, and we'll have a great shot in the AL Central in 2010.
  7. As far as I am concerned, tomorrow is Christmas in September. Can't wait.
  8. QUOTE (chw42 @ Sep 4, 2009 -> 08:55 PM) Cause they're part of the organization. You think Kenny will be happy if Hawk goes on to tell us that Quentin isn't really healthy? Of course, watching him run will tell you that he's definitely not 100%, but they don't need to broadcast that. I also find the Boston team quite boring... EVERYBODY knowns Quentin isn't 100 percent. Hawk talks about how Rios pulls off the ball and how Quentin isn't 100 percent all the time though, so I'm not sure I get the thread.
  9. QUOTE (Jenks Heat @ Sep 4, 2009 -> 08:52 AM) What have the Sox done differently that the cubs have not. Did you see Soriano yesterday...the guy ended the game swinging at three pitches that were never in the strike zone. The Sox were beaten by two of the better teams in baseball and outside of Mr. Rockie the pitching was fantastic, they just could not hit. The cub homestand went 5-5 against the Nats, Astros, Mets and Sox to say the Sox have quit but the cubs have not........I could not agree less with If the cub goes 7-3 which they should have at worst, they would be 4 out with a cupcake schedule beyond belief. In the same time the Sox have lost 5 games in the standings, the cubs have lost 10. Just because Soriano is an absolute dog and the Cubs are a bad team doesn't mean they have quit. They just aren't good. The Sox absolutely quit on that road trip, even the wins the last 2 games on the road trip were handed to them by their opponents.
  10. QUOTE (bmags @ Sep 3, 2009 -> 04:23 PM) What's the context for that nickname? That weird hop he does when he attemps to catch the ball.
  11. QUOTE (GO CHI SOX! @ Sep 3, 2009 -> 04:11 PM) Well, we won our World Series today. Im happy! Haha it's sad that is what this season has come to, but you are right.
  12. We really should have went 6-0 against them, or at the very least, 5-1. The Cubs are absolutely AWFUL, even worse than us, and I'm not sure how they are even above .500. At any rate, I'll take a 4-2 season series against those assholes any day of the week. Nice to win the last game that will have any relevant feeling to it this season.
  13. QUOTE (Heads22 @ Sep 1, 2009 -> 01:07 PM) Iowa RB Jewel Hampton out for the season, will redshirt. Paki the starting RB. A white guy starting at running back? Yikes! Can't wait for Boise State and Oregon tomorrow night.
  14. I think Chicago will get it. As much as they want to give it to Rio, I just don't think they will have the stones to pull the trigger on that one. And I can certainly see why people would have a lot of concerns about the Olypmics in Chicago, but overall I believe it would be a positive to have them.
  15. The Bears have an absolutely horrible secondary, which is going to make this difficult. In addition to that, you need a very good pash rush to cover up for a horrible secondary, and the Bears have a below average pash rush as well. It sounds weird since it is so backwards based on history but it really is true, the Bears offense is not going to be their problem this year, their defense is.
  16. QUOTE (RockRaines @ Sep 2, 2009 -> 01:23 PM) I'd like to know why you think that. Kid has been a top talent since HS, he has breakaway speed and size, both which translate well to the NFL. He's injury prone bordering on soft (probably more than bordering on soft), and he doesn't appear to carry his weight very well. If he stays on the field, he's good, but I have doubts if he will ever be able to do that.
  17. The #2 player in the rivals rankings, WR Kyle Prater, picked USC over among others, Illinois today. It probably doesn't mean much more than USC is currently the leader since verbal commitments are irrelevant nowadays, but it's going to be hard to beat out USC for a football player which they are the stated leader for. The Illini already lost a highly rated in state receiving recruit to Tennessee, so this doesn't help. The Illini are pretty loaded at WR right now, which might actually be hurting them on the trail.
  18. It would be nice if that actually meant anything, and what a bizarre way to end our last game ever at the house of horrors. At least the boys showed some balls for once though there in the 9th inning.
  19. QUOTE (Thunderbolt @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 11:54 PM) Fuller has no pop, but has a great eye at the plate. He's almost a washout at this point It appears Fuller isn't the man coming back for Thome, luckily.
  20. The fact that we agreed to trade Thome for that guy (which is basically, next to nothing) and trade him to a contender tells me that Thome is going to retire after this season. I'm pleasantly surprised at what we got for Count.
  21. I just hope it's not the Red Sox, even though it probably is. I couldn't even root for them if Thome is on their team, it would be more a case of "at least Thome got his ring" after the fact.
  22. I hope he at least is going to a team with a shot at winning it all. I'd imagine he is, why else would he agree to the trade?
  23. QUOTE (southsider2k5 @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 10:40 PM) Damn. I'll miss Thome. Hopefully Kenny laid the groundwork for him to go to a contender, and maybe to come back next year. I doubt Thome is back. It's sad to see him go, but it happens to everybody someday. I hope he wins a World Series, he deserves it.
  24. QUOTE (whitesoxmanager @ Aug 31, 2009 -> 09:07 PM) NOTHING? who replaced the competitiveness and confidence? interesting how Philly turned that corner. and now SF is doing the same. you folks may never understand how important the intangibles in life really are. Yeah, Philly turned that corner after Rowand left and they got his much better replacement, Shane Victorino, in the lineup.
  25. I will say this in the Cubs defense, I don't think they have quit. I just think they are incredibly mediocre and have been that way consistently almost all season. That is more than can be said for our guys, unfortunately. We went from mediocre to outright qutting the last couple of weeks.
